Plot
After fleeing the United States, Butch Cassidy and his friend Sundance Kid died in Bolivia in 1908, in a shootout. This is what the official version says. However, according to the story of the film, Cassidy survived, and after living hidden for 20 years in Bolivia he wants to return to his country. However, when he meets a young Spaniard who stole a mine belonging to the most important businessman in Bolivia, Cassidy changes his plans.
Opinion
The famous train and bank robber Butch Cassidy is not dead as they all thought, but he survived and is now an old man who lives under the name of James Blackthorn in an isolated village in Bolivia, but when he learns that Etta Place died, an old friend, feels that the time has come to return to the United States, however, his return trip will be interrupted by the appearance of Eduardo Apodaca, a Spaniard with whom he changes some shots, causing James horse to run away carrying everything his money.
James decides not to kill him and prefers to leave at night, however, he is followed by Eduardo, who asks him for help because he is being followed by the men of a powerful industrialist whom he has stolen, and although James first refuses to help him, when Eduardo offers to pay the money he lost with the condition of helping him get to an abandoned mine where has hidden stolen money, James decides to accept, starting the adventure of these two bandits.
In addition, while all this is happening we see some flashbacks that show us the past, when Butch decides to travel to South America accompanied by his companions Sundance Kid and Etta Place.
The best of the film is the script, the photography and the Sam Shepard perfomance, the weak point lies in the direction, which I believe commits some basic flaws, such as imprecise cuts and inconsistencies, on the other hand, although the performance of Eduardo Noriega, whom I met when I saw Tesis, is not bad, I did not find it good or remarkable enough. Although it is a Spanish film, most of the time speak in English, so subtitles do not represent a problem.
The fact that it is a western but takes place in Bolivia confers interesting characteristics, such as the immense plains and different landscapes that are perfectly contrasted in the film's photography, as well as the presence of the culture of the Bolivian natives.
In short, it is an interesting film, although not especially to my liking, I would not really see it again, or I would not do it on my own decision, however, if you like the western genre, you can also take a look at the film, it includes an unexpected twist near the end, which without a doubt is the best of the film.
