Borgman (Film): Review.

Review by @martinmcfly · 2855d · of Borgman

For weeks I had this movie on my list until finally I could cross it out. Unfortunately I did not find what I expected, and I did not like that. Today I will talk about a Borgman, a Dutch film that was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

Year: 2013 Category: Psychological Thriller, Drama. Director: Alex van Warmerdam. Cast: Jan Bijvoet, Hadewych Minis, Jeroen Perceval, Alex van Warmerdam, Tom Dewispelaere, Sara Hjort Ditlevsen, Elve Lijbaart, Dirkje van der Pijl, Pieter-Bas de Waard, Eva van de Wijdeven, Annet Malherbe.

Plot

Borgman, a vagrant who lives in the forest with his colleagues, is forced to flee and seek a new refuge, so he goes to a luxurious house where a woman receives him secretly from her husband. Soon the influence of Borgman and his friends begins to corrupt the family from the shadows.

Opinion

The film does not start badly, in fact it does very well, it starts with a scene in which a small group led by a priest with a shotgun pursues some strange and mysterious vagrants that live literally under the forest. That's where Camiel Borgman appears, a scruffy vagrant with his beard and longish hair.

Borgman decides to ask for help to shower in a luxurious house near the forest, but the owner of the house, Richard, who is husband of Marina, and father of Isolde, Rebecca and Leo, decides to hit Borgman in an uncontrolled way. Marina, surprised by Richard's behavior, gets upset with him and then decides, secretly, to help the tramp, allowing him to shower, eat and sleep in the house. Little by little, and in a very strange way, the clandestine presence of this intruder will destroy the family nucleus.

The first minutes are the best in the film, since it presents a mysterious story with a very intriguing character that we want to know better, but from there, his narrative consists of a series of inexplicable actions, one after another, causing the disconcerting scenario shown at the beginning of the film to quickly degenerate into a meaningless film.

But the problem of the film does not lie in the absence of explanations, since other very good films have built a story without explaining anything, the problem lies in the absolute absence of tension, which disappears as soon as the viewer realizes that what happens on the screen does not attend to anything rational, but to mysteriously magical and enchanting forces.

The main performances are fine, but there was not much to act according to my assessment, the film is quite cold and the story that is being narrated also, so there is an absence of emotion, which evidently contrasts in the performances.

Frankly what I should understand about the film, I did not understand it, for that reason I cannot recommend it.
