Review by @martinmcfly · 2687d · of Brawl in Cell Block 99

I had already heard about Brawl in Cell Block 99, but a few days ago it was when I received a recommendation from @retro-room about this film, so I finally decided to give it a try and it did not disappoint me at all, what I have seen I liked it.

Year: 2017 Category: Action, Thriller. Director: S. Craig Zahler. Cast: Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson, Udo Kier, Marc Blucas, Tom Guiry.

Plot

After losing his job and learning that his wife was unfaithful, Bradley Thomas begins working for a drug dealer, which will lead him to prison. While there he will be extorted to find and kill an inmate named Christopher Bridge.

Opinion

Bradley Thomas, a former boxer, works in an auto repair shop, but from one day to the next his life collapses when is fired and he also discovers that his wife, Lauren, was being unfaithful after their relationship get cold when she lost a pregnancy.

In the face of this situation Bradley decides to arrange the relationship with Lauren and try to have a child with her again, but to do so, decides to ask Gil for work, a drug dealer who after a while using Bradley as a mule, decides to do business with Eleazar, so he asks Bradley to pick up crystal meth with two of his new partner's men.

In the middle of the operation, the Eleazar's men are discovered by the police, unleashing a shootout, Bradley, who considers himself a patriot, decides to help the police instead of his colleagues, being arrested later. Then Bradley decides to accept the charges against him so is sentenced to 7 years in prison because he did not decide to report anyone.

And although it seems I've told a lot, I have not, that's just the beginning, because later it's when the real plot of the film starts, when Bradley is extorted by an Eleazar man with the objective of identifying an inmate named Christopher Bridge and kill him, the problem, only one, Christopher Bridge is not in the same prison.

The film is directed by S. Craig Zahler, of whom I spoke a little over a week ago when I made the review of Bone Tomahawk, and as in that film, here he also takes care of both the directing work and the script. About his work I must say something, because after having seen only two films by this director I can recognize a pattern in his work, and it is violence, but not any kind of violence, Zahler unlike, for example, Tarantino, it does not exaggerate with blood, but that is no less subtle, on the contrary, the violence shown by Zahler is practically gore, causing you to turn your eyes away from the camera for seconds because his style of violence is quite graphic.

As for the performances I must say that the work done by Vince Vaughn is quite good, is in a role where his height is a very influential factor, in addition, the haircut and the change of appearance that performs to interpret this role it's really fabulous, not to mention that his work when facing hand-to-hand action scenes is very good, it reminded me of that character he played in the second season of True Detective. The rest of the performances are acceptable, but this is a film in which Vince occupies 90% of the time on the screen.

It is the kind of film that will not disappoint all those who enjoy action shows, a basic and simple story but with enough motivation for the protagonist to justify the avalanche of extreme violence that will unleash.

8/10

Great film, quite violent, I would recommend that the most sensitive people get away from him, the rest can see it, pure action, and well done violence.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I have a tendency to overhype stuff that I like, so I'm always a bit tentative when someone takes me up on a recommendation.

Its been satisfying to see Vaughn transition from a comedic actor to a dramatic one. Most of the time, it doesn't work out so well (aka Jim Carrey), but I think Vince Vaughn has moved from comedy to drama as well as Tom Hanks did in the early 90's.
