Z for Zachariah (Film): Review.

Review by @martinmcfly · 2860d · of Z for Zachariah

In recent years we have seen a wide variety of films that deal with the theme of the apocalypse and the post-apocalypse, however, although most are designed to show special effects and dazzle us with sequences of action and adventure, in Z for Zachariah that does not happen, but tries to show the event from another perspective, based on the book of the same name written by Robert C. O'Brien, which, of course, I did not read.

Year: 2015 Category: Science Fiction, Drama. Director: Craig Zobel. Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Margot Robbie, Chris Pine.

Plot

As a result of an event that destroys human civilization, two men and one woman are in an intense love triangle since they could be the last survivors of humanity.

Opinion

If we allow ourselves to be guided by the predominant ideas of the last decade, human civilization has its days numbered. Films that pose different types of apocalypse, whether endemic diseases, nuclear wars, meteorites, alien attacks or even zombies, including in Children of Men poses a scenario in which the end of civilization is given by the inability of women to continue engendering life.

It is within this scenario of apocalypse, uncertainty and desolation, where the story that this film presents on the screen unfolds. But unlike what we usually see, the story in this film is not made to dazzle with scenarios that show large uninhabited cities in which a fierce struggle unfolds to survive, but decides to investigate the moral problems and in the decisions that the protagonists must make.

I will not tell you much, the film shows the story of Ann Burden, a young girl who survived the apocalypse, and who lives in a house in the middle of nowhere. Later, she meets another survivor, John Loomis, who is injured, so she decides to help him. Slowly they get to know each other, but then a new survivor appears, Caleb, a young boy who will bring tension to the situation.

Then, with the arrival of these two men the loneliness of the woman ends, helping her to reactivate the electric power in her farm, but slowly the coexistence between the three becomes more and more uncomfortable, because the feelings begin to play a role each more important. As I said, the objective of the film is not to present the dystopian scenario that we have seen all these years in the rest of the films that pose the problem of apocalypse, but we see a story where there are very few opportunities to find someone to share the time that they have left of life, reason why the situation generates a loving triangle that every time becomes more tense, where the looks and feelings of guilt are constant.

The protagonist must decide if to continue with Loomis, which helped her after she was a long time alone, or if she will opt for the personal attraction she feels for Caleb. So those who expect to find the traditional adventure for survival will probably be disappointed.

The three performances are good. Chiwetel Ejiofor acts very well as always, doing a job that really convinces us. While Margot Robbie, one of my favorite actresses, makes an excellent interpretation. Chris Pine does an acceptable job too, although below the level of his two partners. The film is moderately entertaining, although it decays at times, but it can cause us to ask ourselves some questions and think about some things that other movies of the same genre do not refer to frequently.

Score

6/10

The film is moderately entertaining, it is not essential, but it is good enough to see the afternoon of a Sunday, or Thursday, as it was in my case.

One thing that pretty much everyone can agree is that the ending kept us longing. You just want to see more after than hypnotic ending with the amazing music. It has some good scenes and most of it was low budget average indie movie with star case. But the music and some scenes + ending were just top notch.
