Cinema is a wide and fascinating world, as well as very appealing. I don't consider myself an expert in the area at all, but I do love to immerse myself in some plots and get to feel them as if I were part of them. This, I suppose, is one of the objectives of those who make productions such as movies and series, both on the big screen and on the platforms (now very popular) intended for that purpose.

Lately, I have been giving myself some time to watch series on Netflix and there I found one of the K-drama genre, a Korean TV production, which I loved, as it is a mix of romance and drama, also fantasy, as well as action and a theme at first complicated to understand, but then it traps you in its exciting plot.

I am talking about The King: Eternal Monarch. A recent Korean production (the year 2020). As I said, a mixture of fiction, romance, drama, and also suspense at times. Koreans are known for being very imaginative and perhaps for some, in some productions, a bit fanciful.

However, isn't cinema a field to enjoy and even immerse yourself in the stories simply to have fun and relax? That's how I see it and that's why I enjoy this genre so much, of course, with some exceptions.

This production I started watching through Netflix and it consists of 16 chapters, in which I was immersing myself and I can truly say that it caught me and I watched up to 3 or 4 per day. It was crazy. You could say I got caught up in K-dramas again with this series.

El cine es un mundo amplio y fascinante, así como muy atrayente. No me considero para nada experta en el área, pero si me encanta sumergirme en algunas tramas y llegar a sentirlas como si yo fuera parte de ellas. Este, supongo, es uno de los objetivos de los que realizan producciones como películas y series, tanto en la pantalla grande, como en las plataformas (ahora muy populares) destinadas a tal fin.

Últimamente, he estado dándome un tiempo para ver series en Netflix y allí encontré una del género de los K-dramas, una producción de la TV coreana, que me encantó, pues es una mezcla de romance y drama, también fantasía, así como acción y un tema en principio complicado de entender, pero que luego te atrapa en su emocionante trama.

Les hablo de El Rey: monarca eterno. Una producción coreana reciente (año 2020). Como ya dije, una mezcla de ficción, romance, drama y también suspenso en momentos. Los coreanos se caracterizan por ser muy imaginativos y quizás para algunos, en algunas producciones, algo fantasiosos.

Sin embargo, ¿no es el cine un rubro para disfrutar y hasta sumergirse en las historias simplemente con el fin de divertirte y relajarte? Así lo concibo yo y por eso disfruto mucho este género, por supuesto, con algunas excepciones.

Esta producción comencé a verla a través de Netflix y consta de 16 capítulos, en los que me fui sumergiendo y de verdad puedo decir que me atrapó y veía hasta 3 o 4 por día. Toda una locura. Se podría decir que quedé nuevamente atrapada en los K-dramas con esta serie.

Its essential plot (no spoilers, I hate spoilers), is based on the existence of parallel universes. As fanciful as it may sound to some, to my taste, it's a fascinating yet disturbing subject matter. Imagine thinking about the existence of several universes where there are other versions of you, physically the same, but with another life and personality?

I really must confess that, although I was caught by the series, there were also moments of uneasiness and perhaps slight disturbance at the thought that in real life there could be a possibility like that. Although I know little about the world of cinema on its technical side, and much less about Korean cinema, I can tell you that the production is very well done (from my point of view) in terms of the realism of the landscapes, their environments and even the music that accompanies the series.

The setting is very authentic. I love this about Koreans. The realism of the locations and the beauty of the landscapes they present is, perhaps, something that gets me. Seeing the protagonists in real environments, in beautiful cities and places, presenting the splendor of their nature and daily life, was something that hooked me. I also like that Koreans, in many of their productions, always tend to show details of their cultural and historical side, as well as their customs. The setting takes place in two different eras of the country in question.

The story is framed in its beginnings by a legend from ancient times, where through a mystical object (a legendary flute), you can have the power to cross worlds and see other versions of yourself in those spaces. This feature is present in many Korean series that are science fiction and fantasy.

Of course, the story begins with a very dramatic situation, which is difficult to understand at the beginning, but then, it gives way to the plot itself, and almost at the end, it causes you a big surprise regarding the revelation of the facts of that moment and that will be decisive for the final part of the story.

Su trama esencial (sin spoilers, odio los spoilers), se basa en la existencia de los universos paralelos. Aunque suene muy fantasiosa para algunos, para mi gusto, es una temática fascinante aunque inquietante. Imagínense pensar en la existencia de varios universos dónde hay otras versiones de ti, igual físicamente, ¿pero con otra vida y personalidad?

Realmente debo confesar que, aunque estaba atrapada por la serie, también hubo momentos de inquietud y quizás ligera perturbación al pensar que en la vida real pudiera existir una posibilidad como esa. Aunque poco conozco del mundo del cine en su parte técnica, y mucho menos del coreano, les puedo decir que la producción está muy bien hecha (desde mi óptica) en cuanto al realismo de los paisajes, sus entornos y hasta la música que acompaña la serie.

La ambientación es muy auténtica. Esto me encanta de los coreanos. El realismo de las locaciones y lo bonito de los paisajes que presentan, es, quizás, algo que me atrapa. Ver los protagonistas en ambientes verdaderos, en una ciudad y sitios hermosos, presentando el esplendor de su naturaleza y de su vida cotidiana, fue algo que me enganchó. Me agrada también que los coreanos, en muchas de sus producciones, tienden siempre a mostrar detalles de su parte cultural e histórica, así como sus costumbres. La ambientación se da en dos épocas diferentes del país en cuestión.

La historia está enmarcada en sus comienzos por una leyenda proveniente de la antigüedad, dónde a través de un objeto místico (una flauta legendaria), se puede tener el poder de atravesar mundos y ver otras versiones de ti en aquellos espacios. Esta característica está presente en muchas series coreanas que son de ciencia ficción y fantasía.

Por supuesto, la historia comienza con una situación muy dramática, que es difícil de entender al comienzo, pero que luego, va dando paso a la trama en sí y casi al final, te causa una gran sorpresa respecto a la revelación de los hechos de ese momento y que será decisivo para la parte final de la historia.

Koreans of course, in my opinion, are very imaginative and create stories that combine drama, fiction, suspense, action, and romance, as well as the funny part in a good way. They have a little bit of everything in their stories and this one is no exception. Maybe a bit fantastic, but it makes you think in many ways.

The meaning and value of friendship, as well as the love for family, is something that is also shown in this series. That's one aspect that I like about the Korean series. They always show this part of the human being that is essential. The sense of solidarity, empathy, support, and affection among friends, is also present.

I also think that this filmic world, although at times it indeed shows you the realism of life, is conducive to showing you an imaginary world that may also have some realism in its parts, something that makes you forget every day for a moment and makes you live the story that you are watching at that moment. In my opinion, that's the idea, and this story, with me, achieved that. I was hooked with a lot of interest from beginning to end.

Regarding the acting part, technically, I can't contribute much except what I perceived of them in this series. Lee Min Ho is a famous actor in his country and I think he plays this role (I have not seen him in previous roles) very well. He gives the required characteristic to the character (King Lee Gon), among them the proper behavior of a king, the passion and expression of his love for the leading lady, elegance, and charisma. I liked his performance very much.

The female lead (Kim Go-eun), is very fresh and authentic, with simple and very nice energy. Despite her role, which could be considered a bit rough in her behavior (police detective Jeong Tae-eul), when it's her turn to express her love, I was shocked and even tears came out me when watching some scenes.

Los coreanos por supuesto, en mi opinión, son muy imaginativos y crean unas historias que combinan el drama, la ficción, el suspenso, la acción, el romance, así como también, la parte divertida de buena forma. Tienen de todo un poco en sus historias y esta, no es la excepción. Quizás algo fantástica, pero te pone a pensar en muchos sentidos.

El sentido y el valor de la amistad, así como el amor por la familia, es algo que también se muestra en esta serie. Ese es un aspecto que me agrada de las series coreanas. Siempre muestran esta parte del ser humano que es esencial. El sentido de la solidaridad, empatía, el apoyo, el cariño entre los amigos, eso también está presente.

También considero que este mundo fílmico, si bien es cierto que en momentos te muestra el realismo de la vida, es propicio para enseñarte un mundo imaginario que quizás también puede tener algo de realismo en sus partes, algo que te haga olvidarte de lo cotidiano por un momento y te haga vivir la historia que en ese momento estás mirando. En mi opinión, esa es la idea, y esta historia, conmigo, lo logró. Me enganché con mucho interés de principio a fin.

Respecto a la parte actoral, en lo técnico, no puedo aportar mucho sino desde lo que percibí de ellos en esta serie. Lee Min Ho es un actor famoso en su país y me parece que este papel (no lo he visto en otros anteriores), lo interpreta estupendamente. Le da la característica requerida al personaje (el Rey Lee Gon), entre ellas la conducta propia de un rey, la pasión y expresión de su amor por la protagonista, elegancia, carisma. Me gustó mucho su interpretación.

La protagonista femenina (Kim Go-eun), muy fresca y auténtica, sencilla y de muy bonita energía. A pesar de su papel, que podría ser considerado algo rudo en su conducta (la detective policial Jeong Tae-eul), cuando le toca expresar su amor, me impactó y hasta lágrimas saco de mí al ver algunas escenas.

The topic of fate is something controversial for many people, and it generates many diverse opinions. However, in my opinion, the most important thing is to take what it leaves you with and to know that, regardless of the opinion that everyone has about it, it is a subject that gives many opinions. In my case, it is exciting and has always caught my attention. For that reason, perhaps I enjoyed watching it a lot.

The protagonists, beyond the difficulties, overcome them and perhaps, against all odds, struggle to reach the state, perhaps not ideal of a relationship, in which they manage to be together in a total way, but constantly. Because perhaps we think too much about the future when we want to live something and we waste the important moments that being present today gives us.

That message struck me from the film. To live something that makes us happy today is fundamental because many times we don't know if there will be tomorrow for it. The costumes are very beautiful, and well represented, especially in what concerns the king and the attire of that investiture. The music of the film is also very nice, appropriate for each scene.

Another reflexion that this series left me in its essence is that although we have the power to change our destiny, for better or for worse, we should never pretend (if there were the possibility, I speak of fantasy, of course) to change our past or what has already happened if we were given the power to do so. The main message is, to do things right from the beginning of our lives, in the attachment and practice, always of good values in our actions. Whether we have a good or bad destiny will depend on it.

I liked the versatility of some actors to play their counterparts or version in the parallel world and be two physically the same but very different in some of their personality traits and way of acting in each world.#

El tema del destino es algo controversial para muchas personas, y genera muchas opiniones diversas. Sin embargo, a mi juicio, lo más importante es tomar lo que realmente te deja, y saber que, independientemente de la opinión que cada quien tenga al respecto, es una temática que da para muchas opiniones. En mi caso, es apasionante y siempre me ha llamado la atención. Por eso, quizás disfruté mucho al verla.

Los protagonistas, más allá de las dificultades, las vencen y quizás, contra todo pronóstico, luchan por alcanzar el estado quizás no ideal de una relación, en el que logren estar juntos de total manera, pero si constantemente. Porque tal vez pensamos mucho en el futuro cuando deseamos vivir algo y desperdiciamos los momentos importantes que nos regala el estar presentes hoy.

Ese mensaje me impactó de la película. El vivir algo que nos hace felices hoy es fundamental, pues muchas veces no sabemos si habrá mañana para ello. El vestuario muy hermoso, y bien representado, sobre todo en lo que atañe al rey y a los atavíos propios de esa investidura. La música de la película también es muy bonita, apropiada para cada escena.

Otra reflexión que me dejó esta serie en su esencia es que si bien, tenemos la potestad de cambiar nuestro destino, para bien o para mal, jamás deberíamos pretender (si existiera la posibilidad, hablo de fantasía, por supuesto) cambiar nuestro pasado o lo que ya sucedió si así se nos diera el poder. El mensaje es, hacer bien las cosas desde el principio de nuestras vidas, en el apego y la práctica, siempre de los buenos valores en nuestras acciones. De ello dependerá que tengamos un buen o mal destino.

Me gustó la versatilidad de algunos actores para interpretar a su contraparte o versión en el mundo paralelo y ser dos en físicamente iguales pero muy diferentes en algunos rasgos de su personalidad y forma de actuar en cada mundo.

Personal dramas revolve around the main plot and give strength to the story. Beyond the initial drama that drives the protagonist's life, it shows his growth as a person and his values, despite the feelings that marked his life, such as the extreme pain of the terrible experiences of his childhood.

Each character, a different story within the plot, has a charm and attraction of its own. The bravery and loyalty in one of them, particularly, hooked me (Captain Jo-Yeong, faithful companion of the king and his main defender).

Another characteristic shown and repeated in the Korean series is the eternal struggle between good and evil. And how everyone, with the free, will we are given, can choose one of the paths. The evil co-protagonist (Lee Lim) is proof of this and the main protagonist (the king), of the attachment to values and the struggle to restore good and balance, despite, as I said above, a tragic event that marks his childhood.

Characters in the space of good. Others are on the side of evil. In the end, both highlight the free will that we human beings are accompanied by, to choose the path we think is our destiny.

The desire to fight to achieve love and also that of each character to fulfill their destiny is one of the essential things I liked about this series. I could not stop watching it to a point of enrapture. I got caught up, again, as I said above with the K-dramas.

Dramas personales que giran alrededor de la trama principal y que le dan fuerza a la historia. Más allá del drama inicial que impulsa la vida del protagonista, se muestra allí un crecimiento como persona y de sus valores, muy a pesar de los sentimientos que marcaron su vida, tal como el dolor extremo por lo terrible vivido en su niñez.

Cada personaje, una historia diferente dentro de la trama y que tiene un encanto y una atracción por sí mismos. La valentía y la lealtad en uno de ellos, particularmente, me enganchó (el capitán Jo-Yeong, fiel compañero del rey y su principal defensor).

Otra característica que se muestra y que se repite en las series coreanas, es la eterna lucha entre el bien y el mal. Y de cómo cada quien, con el libre albedrío que nos es dado, puede escoger uno de los caminos. El coprotagonista malvado (Lee Lim) es prueba de ello y el protagonista principal (el rey), del apego a los valores y la lucha por restaurar el bien y el equilibrio, muy a pesar de como dije más arriba, de un hecho trágico que marca su infancia.

Personajes en el espacio del bien. Otros en el lado del mal. Al final, ambos resaltan el libre albedrío del que estamos acompañados los seres humanos, para escoger el camino que pensemos que es nuestro destino.

El deseo de lucha por alcanzar un amor y también la de cada personaje por cumplir su destino, es una de las cosas esenciales que me gustó de esta serie. No pude dejar de verla a un punto de enviciamiento. Me atraparon, nuevamente, como dije más arriba los K-dramas.

I am very romantic and I immerse myself a lot in these types of stories that are a mix of romance and fantasy. Maybe that's why I'm attracted to this kind of production. I haven't watched this kind of series for a long time, because when I do, it's hard for me to detach myself from them.

An exciting series, romantic, beautiful in many aspects, with valuable messages for life. For those who like this genre, as I do, yes, I recommend it with confidence and with amplitude.

As I specified at the beginning, I am not an expert in reviewing, but I tried to give you my impression about this one that hooked me and fascinated me from beginning to end.

Soy muy romántica y me sumerjo mucho en este tipo de historias que son una mezcla de romance y fantasía. Quizás por ello es que me atraen las producciones de este tipo. Tenía tiempo sin ver este tipo de series, pues cuando lo hago, me cuesta despegarme de ellas.

Una serie emocionante, romántica, bonita en muchos aspectos, con mensajes valiosos para la vida. Para quienes gustan de este género, como yo, si, la recomiendo con confianza y con amplitud.
