¿Qué tal, cinéfilos?
Durante estos dos últimos meses he disfrutado varias series geniales que me han gustado y que valen mucho la pena discutirlas en una reseña. La cuestión es que no había podido sentarme con calma a escribir...¿y qué ocurre cuando no escribes la reseña al momento? Bueno, simple, se van perdiendo detalles e ideas que son importantes comentar y más aún cuando las tramas están cargadas de simbolismos que te llevan a que analices aún más la historia que se cuenta. Hoy les comparto mi reseña sobre una de las últimas series de Netflix más comentadas por el público y que, a mi parecer, ha resultado ser un gran éxito pese a las diversas opiniones que ha llegado a recibir.

Over these past couple of months I've enjoyed several great series that I've enjoyed and that are very much worth discussing in a review. The thing is, I hadn't been able to sit down calmly to write...and what happens when you don't write the review on the spot? Well, simple, you lose details and ideas that are important to comment and even more when the plots are loaded with symbolism that lead you to analyze even more the story that is being told. Today I share with you my review of one of the latest Netflix series most commented by the public and that, in my opinion, has turned out to be a great success despite the diverse opinions it has received.

La serie Wednesday estrenada el miércoles (obvio) 23 de Noviembre de este mismo año nos trae de regreso a uno de los personajes más icónicos del cine de los años 90's: Wednesday (Merlina) Addams. Sí, la mayor de los hijos de la familia Addams está de regreso con su particular forma de ser tan inteligente, sarcástica, macabra y un tanto "odio a la gente". Esta forma de ser tan diferente a la de otros chicos de su edad le ha llevado a meterse en diversos problemas y también le ha costado la expulsión de varios colegios, así que en vista de esto sus peculiares padres -Homero y Morticia- deciden internarla en la Academia Nervermore, una instituación que educa a adolescentes marginados o catalogados como "extraños" que, en este caso, nos estamos refiriendo a licántropos, gorgonas, sirenas, vampiros. Esta academia es como una especie de Hogwarts o de Mansión X dirigida por la siempre implacable pero a la vez enigmática Larissa Weems interpretada por la fantástica Gwendoline Christie a quien recordamos por su personaje Brienne de Tarth en Games of Thrones.
La academia está situada cerca del pueblo de Jericho cuyos habitantes están plenamente conscientes de lo que se oculta entre sus gruesas paredes, pero a pesar de eso no son muy amantes de la idea de tener que convivir, de cierta manera, con estos adolescentes extraños. Evidentemente, esto lleva a que los estudiantes de Nevermore sean constantemente rechazados y sometidos a ciertas burlas por los habitantes del pueblo y sobretodo por aquellos que poseen sus mismas edades. Entre los habitantes destacados del pueblo se encuentra Tyler un camarero de la transitada cafetería local y que a parte es hijo del no tan simpático sheriff del pueblo.
The series Wednesday premiered on Wednesday (obvious) November 23rd of this year brings back one of the most iconic characters of the 90's movies: Wednesday (Merlina) Addams. Yes, the eldest of the Addams family children is back with her particular way of being so intelligent, sarcastic, macabre and a little bit "I hate people". This way of being so different from other kids her age has led her to get into trouble and has also cost her expulsion from several schools, so in view of this her peculiar parents -Homero and Morticia- decide to send her to the Nervermore Academy, an institution that educates marginalized teenagers or those classified as "strange", which, in this case, we are referring to lycanthropes, gorgons, mermaids, vampires. This academy is like a kind of Hogwarts or Mansion X directed by the always relentless but at the same time enigmatic Larissa Weems played by the fantastic Gwendoline Christie whom we remember for her character Brienne of Tarth in Games of Thrones.
The academy is located near the town of Jericho whose inhabitants are fully aware of what is hidden within its thick walls, but despite that they are not very fond of the idea of having to coexist, in a certain way, with these strange teenagers. Evidently, this leads to the students of Nevermore being constantly rejected and subjected to certain ridicule by the inhabitants of the town and especially by those who are their own age. Among the town's prominent inhabitants is Tyler, a waiter at the busy local coffee shop, who also happens to be the son of the town's not-so-nice sheriff.

Por otro lado, dentro de las gruesas y elevadas paredes de Nevermore conoceremos a una amplia lista de alumnos, empezando por la siempre risueña Enid Sinclair quien se convierte en la compañera de habitación de Wednesday. Enid es una chica lobo, bastante carismática y adicta a las redes sociales cuya licantropía no acaba de salir a la luz. También tenemos a otros dos personajes que destacan: Xavier y Bianca, el chico guapo y la autodenominada Señorita Popular. Otro de los personajes adolescentes que no se puede dejar de lado es el pequeño Eugene, un chico aficionado a la apicultura y que ni siquiera logra encajar en el grupo de los chicos "raritos".

Son muchas las caras nuevas con las que Wednesday comienza a relacionarse, pero no sólo basta con el hecho de que debe aprender a gestionar estas nuevas —y complicadísimas— relaciones en su nuevo hogar, sino también se verá inmiscuída en una extraña investigación policial (muy al estilo de Agatha Christie), tendrá que aprender a controlar sus poderes psíquicos y encima de todo esto también tendrá que resolver un complejo misterio en el que sus padres se vieron envueltos hace 25 años atrás cuando ambos fueron estudiantes de la misma academia.
On the other hand, inside the thick, high walls of Nevermore we will meet a wide list of students, starting with the always giggly Enid Sinclair who becomes Wednesday's roommate. Enid is a wolf girl, quite charismatic and addicted to social media whose lycanthropy has yet to come to light. We also have two other characters that stand out: Xavier and Bianca, the cute boy and the self-described Lady Popular. Another teenage character that can't be left out is little Eugene, a boy who is fond of beekeeping and who doesn't even manage to fit in with the group of "weirdos".
There are many new faces that Wednesday begins to relate to, but it is not only enough that she must learn to manage these new -and very complicated- relationships in her new home, she will also be involved in a strange police investigation (very Agatha Christie style), she will have to learn to control her psychic powers and on top of all this she will also have to solve a complex mystery in which her parents were involved 25 years ago when they were both students at the same academy.
Algo que tiene Netflix muy claro es que sus producciones originales que giran entorno de adolescentes terminan siendo un gran éxito, esto lo vimos por ejemplo con Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, Élite y ahora lo vemos también con Wednesday. Es por esto que quizás la serie puede que no funcione para todo tipo de público, pues esto del drama existencial adolescente puede terminar resultando un choque para aquellas personas que crecieron viendo la serie de los 60’s y la película de los 90’s. Por eso es importante tener en mente que la serie no se trata de la Familia Addams en sí, sino más bien de las vivencias de una Wednesday adolescente así que es de cierta manera comprensible que incluyan esto de los triángulos amorosos, el típico baile o fiesta de instituto y la rivalidad entre la chica popular y la protagonista.

Particularmente, yo siento que la esencia del personaje de Wednesday se mantuvo a la perfección. Esa personalidad oscura, macabra, sarcástica que tanto la caracteriza no se perdió en esta interpretación, simplemente Jenna Ortega hizo un trabajo estupendo encarnando a un personaje tan complejo como lo es Wednesday. Algo que me gustó es que a pesar de que intentan pintar a nuestra protagonista como una chica dark perfecta, es decir, sabe pelear y es sumamente inteligente y astuta, en algunas circunstancias ella también pierde y es ahí donde el personaje comienza a transcender por encima de todo y evoluciona tomando consciencia de sí misma y de sus posibilidades, además de que le da una oportunidad a lo que hay a su alrededor.
Algo que también se nota desde muy lejos es el pequeño drama familiar fundamentado en aquello de que a veces los padres quieren que sus hijos le sigan los pasos, cuando en realidad a estos últimos no les interesa en lo más mínimo convertirse en una copia exacta de ellos y sólo quieren volar libres bajo su propia forma de ser. Esto se vio claramente reflejado en la relación madre e hija entre Morticia y nuestra protagonista quien no quería que la asemejaran demasiado a la perfección de su madre. Aunque lo chistoso de esto último es que a pesar de que Wednesday no quería seguir los mismos pasos de su madre (ser popular y absurdamente buena en todo lo que hace) al final de cuentas, muy a su manera, sí terminó pareciéndose un poco a ella. Ahora que tocamos el punto de los padres de Wednesday, me pareció un total acierto que la hermosa de Catherine Zeta Jones interpretara a Morticia Addams, siento que es una digna sucesora al igual que Luis Guzmán en el papel de Homero Addams porque, si nos ponemos a analizar, entre los varios actores que han interpretado a este personaje, Luis ha sido el que tiene una mayor semejanza con el Homero Addams de los cómics. Sin embargo, pese a que me gustó mucho la elección del casting (y aquí quizás me esté contradiciendo un poco) en ocasiones sentía que había falta de química entre los personajes de la familia. Por separado funcionaban bastante bien, pero a la hora de juntarlos había algo que no lograba convencerme del todo, sobre todo con Homero y Morticia. Incluso la inclusión del personaje del Tío Lucas la vi un poco forzada e injustificada, no le aportó demasiado peso a la trama y simplemente sentí que estuvo ahí sólo para que el personaje no estuviese relegado, caso contrario a la aparición de dedos...¿me toman por loca si les digo que mi personaje favorito de La Familia Addams siempre ha sido dedos? Es que, ¡vaya! en el caso particular de esta serie, simplemente me encantó y a pesar de que no habla y sólo va de aquí para allá, le aporta una magia increíble a toda la historia.
Something that Netflix has very clear is that its original productions that revolve around teenagers end up being a great success, we saw this for example with Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, Élite and now we also see it with Wednesday. This is why perhaps the series may not work for all audiences, as this existential teenage drama may end up being a shock for those who grew up watching the 60's series and the 90's movie. That's why it's important to keep in mind that the series is not about the Addams Family per se, but rather about the experiences of a teenage Wednesday so it's somewhat understandable that they include this love triangles, the typical high school dance or party and the rivalry between the popular girl and the main character.

Particularly, I feel that the essence of Wednesday's character was maintained to perfection. That dark, macabre, sarcastic personality that characterizes her so much was not lost in this interpretation, simply Jenna Ortega did a great job embodying a character as complex as Wednesday is. Something I liked is that even though they try to paint our protagonist as a perfect dark girl, that is, she knows how to fight and is extremely intelligent and cunning, in some circumstances she also loses and that's where the character begins to transcend above all and evolves becoming aware of herself and her possibilities, besides giving a chance to what's around her.
Something that is also noticeable from afar is the small family drama based on the fact that sometimes parents want their children to follow in their footsteps, when in reality the latter are not interested in the least in becoming an exact copy of them and only want to fly free in their own way of being. This was clearly reflected in the mother-daughter relationship between Morticia and our protagonist who did not want to be too much like her mother's perfection. Although the funny thing about the latter is that even though Wednesday did not want to follow in her mother's footsteps (being popular and absurdly good at everything she does) in the end, in her own way, she did end up looking a bit like her. Now that we touch the point of Wednesday's parents, I thought it was a total success that the beautiful Catherine Zeta Jones played Morticia Addams, I feel that she is a worthy successor to Luis Guzman in the role of Homer Addams because, if we analyze, among the various actors who have played this character, Luis has been the one who has a greater resemblance to the Homero Addams of the comics. However, despite the fact that I really liked the casting choice (and here I may be contradicting myself a bit) at times I felt that there was lack of chemistry between the characters in the family. Separately they worked well enough, but when it came to putting them together there was something that failed to quite convince me, especially with Homer and Morticia. Even the inclusion of the character of Uncle Luke was a bit forced and unjustified, it didn't add much weight to the plot and I just felt that he was there just so that the character wasn't relegated, contrary to the appearance of fingers.... do you think I'm crazy if I tell you that my favorite character in The Addams Family has always been fingers? It's just that, wow! in the particular case of this series, I simply loved him and even though he doesn't speak and only goes from here to there, he brings an incredible magic to the whole story.
Ahora, centrándonos en los personajes adolescentes, el premio al mejor personaje secundario sin duda alguna es para Enid, la compañera de habitación de Wednesday. Enid es todo un vómito de arcoíris, evidentemente, muy contraria a la personalidad de Wednesday y es por eso que de cierta manera esa amistad funciona tan bien. Si lo llevamos a la realidad muchas veces ocurre que terminamos llevándonos de las mil y un maravillas con personas que son totalmente opuestas a nosotros en todos los sentidos habidos y por haber. Me ha resultado tan maravilloso que esa diferencia de personalidades la plasmaran tanto visualmente, porque incluso lo hicieron con la habitación que ambas compartían. Enid me pareció un personaje increíble por diversas razones, primero porque tocó el fondo de nuestra protagonista y, de cierta manera, fue un pequeño impulso para que Wednesday iniciara su evolución en cuanto a las relaciones con otras personas se refiere, pero más allá de eso el personaje de la lobezna es de esos que es imposible no amar y muy personalmente opino que sería bien interesante una historia aparte sobre ella.
Por otro lado, no me disgustó para nada que Wednesday se viese inmersa en las típicas rivalidades adolescentes, incluso me resultó hasta divertido. El personaje de su “rival”, Bianca, me pareció interesante pero hasta ahí, de hecho en algún punto trataron de adentrarse un poco más a su historia y la verdad lo sentí como un poco fuera de contexto, fue algo del tipo: ”ok, ¿a dónde quieren llegar con esto?” Y en cuanto al interés amoroso de Wednesday en la serie, muchos criticaron todo este asunto porque iba en contra de la personalidad de ella, pero si nos vamos un poco al pasado en la película de los 90’s la Merlina de Christina Ricci tuvo también un pequeño amorío con el personaje Joel Glicker. Así que no me parece fuera de lugar que la Wednesday adolescente también llegara a este punto, lo triste fue lo que sucedió después con este romance…pero ya no diré más al respecto para no hacer ningún tipo de spoiler.
En cuanto a la trama en general puedo decir que sí me gustó, pero a veces me agotaba un poco en el sentido de que se iba demasiado por las ramas y querer abordar tanto era excesivo, es decir, por un lado teníamos a Wednesday de detective indagando sobre la profecía pero también la teníamos investigando el extraño crimen que involucró a Morticia y Homero 25 años atrás y que, al final, tenía relación con lo que estaba ocurriendo en el presente. No me molesta esto de jugar al laberinto y que todos los caminos terminen de converger en un mismo punto, pero lo que sí creo es que pudieron hacerlo de una mejor manera y no jugar demasiado con eso del despiste forzado para desviar las ideas del espectador. Al fin de cuentas el plot twist que tuvo la serie me agradó, parte de él lo sospechaba pero otra parte definitivamente no y eso me agradó. Además, el final estuvo bastante decente…al menos yo no quedé decepcionada.
Now, focusing on the teen characters, the award for best supporting character undoubtedly goes to Enid, Wednesday's roommate. Enid is all rainbow vomit, obviously, very contrary to Wednesday's personality and that's why in a way that friendship works so well. If we take it to reality it often happens that we end up getting along wonderfully with people who are the complete opposite of us in every way possible. I found it so wonderful that this difference of personalities was so visually captured, because they even did it with the room they both shared. Enid seemed to me an incredible character for several reasons, first because she touched the bottom of our protagonist and, in a way, was a small impulse for Wednesday to start her evolution in terms of relationships with other people, but beyond that, the wolf character is one of those that it's impossible not to love and I personally think that a separate story about her would be very interesting.
On the other hand, I didn't dislike at all that Wednesday was immersed in the typical teenage rivalries, I even found it funny. The character of her "rival", Bianca, I found interesting but that's as far as it went, in fact at some point they tried to go a bit deeper into her story and I felt it was a bit out of context, it was something along the lines of: "ok, where are they going with this?" And as for Wednesday's love interest in the series, many criticized this whole thing because it went against her personality, but if we go a little bit back in time in the 90's movie Christina Ricci's Merlina also had a little love affair with the character Joel Glicker. So it doesn't seem out of place to me that the teenage Wednesday also got to this point, the sad thing was what happened next with this romance...but I won't say more about it anymore so as not to make any spoilers.
As for the plot in general I can say that I did like it, but sometimes I was a little exhausted in the sense that it went too far and wanted to address so much, that is, on the one hand we had Wednesday as a detective investigating the prophecy but we also had her investigating the strange crime that involved Morticia and Homer 25 years ago and that, in the end, was related to what was happening in the present. I don't mind this playing the labyrinth and that all paths end up converging at the same point, but what I do think is that they could have done it in a better way and not play too much with the forced detour to divert the viewer's ideas. All in all the plot twist that the series had pleased me, some of it I suspected but some of it I definitely didn't and I liked that. Also, the ending was pretty decent...at least I wasn't disappointed.
A pesar de que hay algunos aspectos con los que no estuve demasiado conforme, Wednesday ha sido una serie que me gustó bastante e incluso la volvería a ver una segunda vez sin ningún problema. Amé la interpretración de Jenna Ortega y la existencia de personajes segundarios como Enid e incluso Tayler. También me gustó que hicieran mención de Edgar Allan Poe, un escritor que sin duda encaja bastante bien con la personalidad dark de la protagonista. Lo de las características ligadas a las series de adolescentes es algo que no me desagradó teniendo en cuenta el hecho de que ese tipo de series me gustan...lo siento, creo que jamás maduraré en ese aspecto. Por último, que Christina Ricci haya tenido un papel dentro de esta serie es algo que me complace y que le otorga un poco más de simbolismo a toda la trama. No sé qué piensan ustedes, pero yo a esta serie le doy un sólido:

Although there are some aspects that I was not too happy with, Wednesday has been a series that I liked a lot and I would even watch it a second time without any problem. I loved Jenna Ortega's performance and the existence of secondary characters like Enid and even Tayler. I also liked that they made mention of Edgar Allan Poe, a writer who certainly fits the dark personality of the protagonist quite well. The teen series thing is something I didn't dislike considering the fact that I like that kind of series...sorry, I don't think I'll ever grow up in that respect. Lastly, that Christina Ricci had a role within this series is something that pleases me and gives a little more symbolism to the whole plot. I don't know what you guys think, but I give this series a solid:
