So apparently, when you hear the word Beekeeper, you might probably imagine a peaceful man somewhere in the countryside, who is taking care of bees, collecting honey and minding his own business. Well… he’s not this type of beekeeper. This guy is not in the movie to collect honey but to take revenge.
The Beekeeper is a 2024 action thriller starring Jason Statham , he’s known as Adam Clay in the movie, he’s a quiet man who lives a simple life looking after bees. But, of course, because this is Jason Statham movie, you already know that quiet life is not going to last very long. I waste expecting it all.
The whole story started when an elderly woman named Eloise Parker , who is very close to Adam becomes the victim of an online scam. She lose a huge amount of money, and the situation becomes so bad. The scam experience itself is actually something that feels believable because these kinds of online schemes happen all the time. Majority of us have experienced it, and if we are not careful about, we’ll become a victim.
It’s a situation where you see a random popup, then someone tells you your computer has a problem, and then, they convince you to give them some information, and boom! before you know it, somebody is reaching for your bank account. So when Adam finds out what happened, he does not call the customer service, He did not even file a complaint. He doesn’t say, “Let’s wait for the authorities to take over” Nope, He basically says, “I’m going to find these people.”
Adam is not just some kind of random beekeeper. He used to be part of a secret organisation known as the Beekeepers, and apparently these people are so dangerous that even powerful people are scared of them. I actually like the whole idea of the beekeeper organization having this mysterious reputation, because whenever someone discovers real Identity of Adam, they suddenly become nervous. You know that feeling of, “Oh, you have no idea who you just messed up with.”
Honestly, the action was actually my favorite part of this movie. I enjoyed enjoyed watching Clay walk into situations where any normal person would probably turn around and run for their dear life, but Instead, he just keeps moving forward like he already knows how everything is going to end. I found myself smiling during some of the fight scenes because of how he confidently handled everyone. The fighting scenes use to remind me of all those old-school action movies where the main character is basically a one-man army.
Again, I felt that the whole “protect the hive” philosophy is cheesy, but still worked for me somehow, especially the ridiculousness of Clay’s reputation and the way people reacted whenever they realised the person they dealing with. Josh Hutcherson who played Derek Danforth was also surprisingly entertaining , and Jeremy Irons on the other hands brought some kind of seriousness to the story and I think that’s needed. All these things keeps me interested in the movie even when the plot went completely off the rails.
However, I definitely have some kind of problems with the movie. The way the story was written was probably my biggest complaint because there are several moments where I just have to stop and think, like “How did they even know that?” I mean some of the characters seem to get information too easily, like they don’t dig enough before they find what they are looking for. I guess some things in the movie happened simply because the story needs them to happen.
Even with the flaws, I can’t say I was bored while watching it. The truth is that , you don’t have to go into the movie expecting something realistic or deeply intelligent. Most of the actions were exaggerated and sometimes it can make it ridiculous. There were also moments when I laughed at how absurd things were in some scenes, but I feel that, A movie does not have to be perfect always to give you an enjoyable experience.
Overall, I wouldn’t call The Beekeeper it a great movie, but I would absolutely call it a fun and energetic one, and the action is entertaining. So, If you love old-school action movies, combines with some kind of corruption and scam story, I think you’ll have a good time with this one. And aging, don’t think too hard about the plot.
