REVIEW
I was recently thinking that after being a fan of The Walking Dead for years, and a somewhat manic fan of apocalyptic stories with an infectious virus, I hadn't found a worthwhile production after All Us Desde premiered on Netflix. I recently had the privilege of having a friend share his account with me, and between browsing and searching, a recommendation surfaced; a k-drama that in the midst of its second season was making waves on Tiktok, but I hadn't decided to watch it. Until that moment, the moment I saw a destroyed city and a group of survivors trying everything to keep going, what can I say, I have a soft spot for the dying being protagonists.
A nod to Rick Grimes for that.
So after having a snack in hand and taking advantage of the lull in activities the first week of January, I started my marathon of: Sweet Home. Today I want to tell you a little bit about this Korean production and try to convince you to give it a chance.
Information
This South Korean TV series based on the eponymous webtoon by Kim Kan-bi and Hwang Young-chan was directed by Lee Eung-bok and produced by Studio Dragon, one of South Korea's leading production companies. The series premiered on Netflix on December 18, 2020, consists of 2 seasons, one of 10 episodes and one of 8, a high-quality cast and a large fandom.
Synopsis
Cha Hyun-soo is a young student living alone after the death of his parents in a car accident. After a series of traumatic events, Cha decides to move into an apartment building called Green Home. However, he soon discovers that the building is under attack by monsters that turn the residents into monsters-like beings.
The series presents a post-apocalyptic world full of monsters, where humans must fight for their survival, something that is undoubtedly its main plus to keep the audience attentive in front of their TV. The main characters are varied and complex, each with their own story and motivations, you would think that the main character would steal all the spotlight, on the contrary it's the side stories that end up hogging all the emotion of the story and making it amazing.
Of course, Cha Hyun-soo as the main protagonist has the best character evolution throughout the first season, going from a lonely and withdrawn young man to a brave and determined savior. But for personal taste, I find the character Lee Eun-hyuk (Lee Do- hyun), an older brother who was studying to be a doctor and takes on the role of group leader, more interesting and intelligent. We also have Lee Si-young with her role as a firefighter with an enviable physical ability who is the voice of morality and bravery, who keeps her amazing role until the second season. Still, all the characters bring great wit to the story.
The special effects and cinematography are good, it wobbles a bit CGI in the first season, but in the second it grabs you gently, which makes Sweet Home visually stunning, especially when we see the cast of the second season. The monsters are designed with great detail and are terrifying, which adds to the tension and fear during the action scenes, they make the viewer feel desperate. The music is also excellent and helps to create a tense and exciting atmosphere.
In all honesty, the proposed play is much deeper than it seems, addressing themes such as loneliness, depression and trauma. Through the characters, the series shows how each deals with these issues differently and how they can affect their ability to survive in a dangerous and desolate world. The series also explores themes such as morality and ethics, and how they can change in extreme situations. But its crowning glory is the virus theory, because those who are converted are those who have such a strong desire for something that it corrupts their souls. That game of morality and mental breakdown, seems to me something exquisite that strengthens the work, because the human being is consumed by his own desires and selfishness, implying that we are monsters for it, although we do not see ourselves as in the series. A game of social criticism that has fascinated me completely.
The second season follows certain characters from the first season and tackles some new pieces that give spark and interest to the general theme of the production, making the k-drama more gripping. The ending leaves many wounds stinging and the losses are inevitable, but the evolution of the virus is amazing. And although it's a bit silly to say it, its post-credits scene is without a doubt what has filled me with hope to wait for its third installment. I can't say why, because it would be spoiler, wink wink.
Sweet Home is a thrilling and emotionally affecting series that offers an interesting and unique take on the post-apocalyptic horror genre. The characters are complex and well-developed, and the plot is full of twists and surprises during its two current installments. The special effects and cinematography are decent, enveloping you in the emotions and feelings generated by each of its characters.
Best of all, its third season will arrive in the summer of 2024!
If you like horror or post-apocalyptic series like I do, I definitely recommend watching Sweet Home.

RESEรA
All Us Dead por Netflix. ยฟQuรฉ puedo decir?
