Have you ever seen a movie about Nazis on the dark side of the moon?
An actual proper narrative film. This is what “Iron Sky” is. A really fun, action, adventure, comedy released in 2012.
Before we get into the movie let’s get a brief background information:
It’s an independent, international Production centred in Finland. The Director, Timo Vuorensola, is Finish. It was filmed in Germany and Australia and it had a modest budget of 7.5 million dollars.
The Director and top crew members had made a film called “Start Wreck” and it was extremely well received mainly on the internet. After that, one of the producers mention that Nazis in the dark side of the moon could make a cool movie, he said that sort of joking. Cut to two years later and they are making a movie about nazis on the moon.
The film starts with a couple of American astronauts landing on the moon, an operation arranged by the (female) President in order to get her re-elected. The exploration goes wrong and one of the astronauts (who is actually an actor) gets captured by the local nazis. He is a black man, making the fact that he is captured by nazis quite funny.
He meets a nice, compassionate and altruistic young nazi woman… played by the the lovely “Julia Dietze”. I must say I have never seen her before in any film, but I was pleasantly surprised with her performance.
In the meanwhile our earthling character finds out that the nazis are planning to go back to earth and conquer it. There is a funny scene where Julia’s character is giving a class to children and she shows Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great dictator” , the funny part is that she presents it as being a 10 min short film, showing the fuher has a great humanitarian, dreaming of bringing the world together while holding the globe….
Back on earth we see the President and the respective entourage in action. Some of the nazis come to earth to plan the conquest… and the story develops from there… (At some point, the woman sees the full Chaplin’s film… and it's a sad moment for her... )
“Iron Sky” is a crazy movie that never takes itself too seriously. It is also a comedy with a sharp sense of humour while at the same time has some very relevant comments about our society, politicians, the media etc…
To see a movie with this scale, level of craziness and depth of subject matter made independently, can be encouraging.
Just some years ago this Production scope would only be possible if made by the establishment. However film is a very expensive and resourceful Art form… so even if this movies can be made now a days, if the public won’t go see them, they won't get made.
Luckily this is not the case with “Iron Sky”, it was a big hit. And even though it is still a recent film, I think the term “Cult Classic” can be used.
In short I would say: it’s a fun, entertaining film with things to say about our world.
