Just as a book cover can catch your eye, so too can a film poster pique your curiosity.
And let me say that it exceeded all my expectations.
What a fantastic film Brimstone was.
I knew it was a dark western starring Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce, but I donβt think anything could have really prepared me for just how dark this film would ultimately turn out to be.
Secondly, I was also drawn in by the number of Dutch people who contributed to this English-language western.
From the director to the actors, the soundtrack and much more besides.
Brimstone centres on the life of Liz, a mute midwife who lives with her husband and children in a small community in the American West.
When a new minister arrives in her village, her life changes completely.
You can really feel the atmosphere shifting.
Liz knows immediately who the new minister is. And more importantly: she knows exactly what he is capable of.
From that moment on, the film transforms into a dark and relentless tale of fear, survival, abuse and revenge.
Youβre actually caught up in a certain tension right from the start of the film.
What I found particularly interesting was the way the story is told.
The film is divided into four chapters: Revelation, Exodus, Genesis and Retribution.
And these arenβt told in chronological order.
Instead, the story keeps going further and further back into Lizβs life, before eventually moving forwards again.
At first, I had to get used to that.
But the further I got into the film, the better I understood why the story is structured this way.
Each chapter reveals something that makes you look at the previous chapter in a different light.
And that kept me watching.
Dakota Fanning really impressed me in this film.
Because Liz cannot speak, a large part of her performance has to come from her facial expressions and body language.
And she is very good at conveying exactly what she is feeling without saying a single word.
Which is a sign of tremendous acting talent.
You can see the fear in her eyes.
But you can also see her determination.
She isnβt simply a victim waiting for someone to come and rescue her.
Beneath all the suffering lies immense strength, and I thought Fanning portrayed that very convincingly.
But if thereβs one acting performance that really sticks in my mind, itβs Guy Pearceβs as the minister.
To be honest, I canβt remember the last time I found a character so incredibly irritating and terrifying.
Whenever he appeared on screen, shivers would run down my spine β almost literally.
He doesnβt need to constantly shout or resort to violence to be scary.
The way he looks at Liz makes you feel uneasy. But his conviction that he has the right to control Lizβs life also makes your blood boil.
He believes his actions are justified by his faith.
And thatβs precisely what makes him even scarier.
The film is by no means an easy watch.
It contains an awful lot of violence, suffering and cruelty.
And some scenes are really hard to watch.
At times, I really found myself thinking: Why does this poor woman have to go through even more?
It sometimes feels as though the film keeps piling one horrific event on top of another.
And although that fits with the story, there were moments when I wondered if it wasnβt all getting a bit too much.
What I really loved, though, was the atmosphere.
The landscapes are stunning, but thereβs almost always a dark cloud hanging over them.
Those vast open spaces should really give you a sense of freedom.
Instead, they often make Liz seem small and vulnerable.
You see the beautiful surroundings, but this stands in stark contrast to the terrible things taking place within them, and that works surprisingly well.
It gives the whole film an almost nightmarish atmosphere.
I also found the religious symbolism interesting.
Brimstone is certainly not subtle in this regard.
The title itself refers to hellfire and damnation, and religion is deeply interwoven with the story.
At times, I found that symbolism very powerful.
At other times, I felt it was all a bit over the top.
There are moments when the film almost literally tells you what to make of it.
And personally, I often prefer it when a film leaves a bit more room for the viewer to make those connections themselves.
I also had to get used to the running time.
The film lasts nearly two and a half hours.
And you really notice it.
Some parts of the story move quite slowly, especially as we go further and further back into Lizβs past.
But at the same time, I donβt think the story would have had the same effect if everything had been told much more quickly.
In fact, the slow build-up ensures that the later revelations pack a bigger punch.
So although I occasionally thought the film might have been a little shorter, it never felt as though that extra time was entirely wasted.
What perhaps surprised me most of all was how long this film stayed with me.
Itβs definitely not a film Iβd describe as enjoyable to watch.
Certainly not.
It does make you think for a while about what youβve just seen. Itβs not the sort of thing you can just shake off.
The story is incredibly dark, but beneath all that violence thereβs also a story about a woman trying to regain control of her own life.
And it was precisely that part of the story that stayed with me the most.
As I mentioned earlier, I liked the Dutch connection.
This English-language film, set in the American West, was directed by the Dutch filmmaker Martin Koolhoven.
As well as the Dutch influence behind the scenes, Carice van Houten shines in front of the camera and delivers a fine leading performance.
That gives the film an interesting identity of its own.
It doesnβt feel like a typical Hollywood Western.
Itβs much darker, has a much more European approach and, at times, feels almost more like a horror film than a traditional Western.
And to be honest, I think thatβs precisely what makes the film stand out.
So, would I recommend Brimstone?
Yes, but with a word of warning.
This is definitely not a film for everyone.
So if youβre looking for a light-hearted Western with cowboys, beautiful landscapes and a bit of action, Iβd advise you to give this film a miss.
But if you can handle a very dark and unsettling story and enjoy films that slowly reveal their secrets, then I definitely think Brimstone is worth watching.
Itβs harsh, uncomfortable and at times almost too much.
But itβs also beautifully shot, incredibly well acted and surprisingly memorable.
And sometimes a film doesnβt have to be pleasant at all to still be a good film.
