Too Many Second Chances: "About Time" Review

Review by @merit.ahama 🏆#86 🎵17 🎬85 📺119 · 3h · of About Time · 1 view

Another time travel story but this time, there are more twists than you would expect. I honestly felt like I'm being betrayed at every single time the main character travels back in time, he kept going back on a few things he doesn't want to or I wish he didn't but I kinda guess it's a price to pay.

The movie came as a recommendation when I had just finished seeing two movies titled "The Vow" and "The Notebook" starred by the same actress who I've come to really enjoy her movies, the person of Rachel McAdams. So yeah, she's the lead actress in this story and played it well.

"About Time" is a 2017 released movie starred by *Domhnall Gleeson as Tim, Rachel McAdams as Mary and Bill Nighy as Dad, the father of Tim. It's a story in the genres of fantasy, family, drama, romance and a bit of comedy. The twists and tension felt stronger than the comedy and even the romance but it was in the right proportion.

The story is about Tim who have just turned 21 and finds out from his Dad that he can time travel to the past like every other man in the family line. He doesn't believe until he does the practical and finds himself in the past. Out of excitement and flexing his new found super power, he starts time traveling back to undo mistakes as he tries to win over a girl to be his girlfriend. He keeps failing until he meets a girl, Mary at an actual blind date.

The twists begins as he starts dating her, losing her, getting married, changing a baby's identity and even daring to bring back the dead with his superpower. The story gets interesting as he makes even more mistakes with his power while trying to save his family and build his own family.

Personally, I think Tim overdid with the powers especially in his attempts to make things right with Mary, who he wasn't even sure she loves him yet. I saw it as him trying too hard for what doesn't need that much effort to work. And then, I love his relationship with his younger sister, he was such a loving big brother in caring for her.

I must mention Tim's dad in this review because I noticed how he had mastered using the powers for himself to the extent of not using it anymore. But I understand why Tim kept choosing to use it until he stopped because he had just learned about it and wanted to achieve something with it, which he really did, that's getting married to Mary.

The story is good one but if I'm being honest, another male actor could have been a better choice for Tim's role. I kept wishing I could be seeing another face for the role but then, it doesn't mean he didn't do a good job with the role. I had a nice time watching him explore the power and building a life outside of it eventually.

I saw it a long time ago and it's a very beautiful, tender, fictional movie, but very tender. I liked the chemistry between the two of them.
