Nightcrawler is a crime thriller film which is written and directed by Dan Gilroy. Here by nightcrawler, you won't see any creature, by any chance, if you have watched Crawl(2014) then this thought might arise like me, hehe. It's a story of a freelance journalist who runs for filming violent incidents to sell them to news televisions.
As our key character, we get to see Jake Gyllenhaal as Louis bloom or "Lou" in short. He was a thief, stealing things from here and there to sell for some quick bucks. He asks for employment too but no one was really interested to hire him, he is a thief, who would bring extra trouble by keeping him. But as he says, "He is a great learner." truly he is.
One night he saw a roadside accident, the police were there and a reporter was filming it to sell it to the news channels. This got him, his next theft was to buy the required stuff to hear about these emergency situations and rush for the crime scene to film. Thus he started, isn’t it impressive? At Least he stopped stealing, I was impressed about this, as mentioned he is a great learner, so he was going fast towards success. Was doing homework to understand these things, sorted out the incidents he should be chasing, and also took a partner to help him to save some time so that he can compete with the other nightcrawlers like him. But yeah, I was feeling like he was losing his emotions while riding the path to professionalism.
Rick: Hey, don't film that, man. He is one of us. Lou: Not anymore, Rick. We are professionals.
This was a scene when a nightcrawler like them met with an accident because of overspeeding and was almost dying. So he has no impact on these, he needs footage to sell and that person was no exception.
What makes the performance of a character great? Only when he can influence the audience with his character, right? Acting as the hero or villain, he must be perfect at his role, he must influence the audience to love or hate that character as it's meant. Might be a spoiler but yeah our protagonist left that impression on me, I was compelled to ride the judgemental journey about his role. Was praising him for his change from a thief to a nightcrawler but gradually his craziness was just to get exclusive footage, something that would be better than the others, to get a better deal he had gone crazy. Well, he was crazy from the beginning but didn't expect that much craziness that he should in the ending scenes, I was really pissed off at him, and maybe that's the success of his role to make them influence me by his perfection.
He had to expand his business, go to the next level, and make a big name so he was all in to go to any extent to acquire that level. And what did he do? Let's keep that for you to explore if you haven't already.
Well, from my personal overview I would say it was a good one. If you are looking for a decent thriller movie for your pastime then you may go with it, Happy Watching.
