Exam session ended so a movie night is a must. One of my habits is that I don't watch trailers before watching a movie, got this habit as I am a thriller lover because I believe that trailers often kill our thrills, which works as a spoiler so here I am. So today I did the same, wanted a chilling taste but got something else, no worries.
Requiem for a Dream is a psychological drama directed by Darren Aronofsky, it was released in 2000. Well, this one is based on a novel written by Hubert Selby Jr.
Starting of the film was kinda slow, to me atleast. Okay, we get four characters in this film as leading, starting with Sara Goldfarb who is a widow and has a son named Harry, he has a girlfriend named Marion, and Harry's friend Tyrone. Four characters to aim at or keep track of. In the beginning, we would see Harry selling his mom's tv to get some money and buying drugs for him and Tyrone. On the other hand, his mother brings back that television from the shop every time, she is kinda addicted to watching television, particularly a show that she watches most of the time.
Harry, his GF, and Tyrone stay together, three of them are drug addicts, and all of them have their own problems and find an escape through this. From drug addicts, Harry and Tyrone become drug dealers, start to make money, and take drugs regularly, too much addicted. On the other hand, Harry's mother, who is a very lonely person, living alone and spends her day with the television, also gets a phone call that offers her to be on a television show, as a television addict she also gets excited and chooses one of her favorite dresses but she is way too fat to be fit in that. So she starts a mission to lose weight by any means. This desire of her to be on television, wearing that particular red dress, and for these losing weight becomes an addiction and things move on.
Listen, all four of them are addicted to something but they have some dreams, like Harry's mother, who wants to be on the television and say some things about her son and husband, Tyrone wants to be a big drug dealer, Harry and Marion want to open a clothes store. But addiction is addiction, things start to scatter, and that's where I got out of the slow feeling and started to get attached to the story, seeing everything fall apart, and how worse the situation could be.
Here our director did a superb job, in the last half anyone could feel the intense scenes and will get drowned with every shot and story.
Skip this portion to avoid spoilers, Do you know what caught me most? Harry was possessive about Marion in the beginning scenes, even while sending her to meet her psychiatrist, later what did he do? Even sent her to sleep with him just to get some money to start everything. Also, Marion is deeply in love with Harry, and later her addiction towards drug suppressed everything that by the end she becomes a prostitute. Among all the consequences of the four, these two are the ones that hit me hard, and also Harry and his mother's physical condition made me sad, Tyrone's ending!
As a whole, this movie carries a heavy message, if addictions are left uncontrolled then they will be doing heavy damage which might bring down the others too. Like I will blame Harry for his mother's condition, even for Marion's condition. Actually, I got sad in the end, I didn't expect it would turn out like this. Well, it was a good film in every way, you could say about direction, acting, storyline or the impact on the audience, in a word I would say perfect. I will be rating this 8.5 out of 10. Must watch for any cinema lovers. Happy Watching!
