Ma Dong-Seok, most of may know him through Train to Busan film but for me, the story is a bit different, I became a fan of him through another movie named, "The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil" so here I am, enjoying another crime thriller from this fav actor of mine.
So our today's movie is The Outlaws, a South Korean action thriller film, written and directed by Kang Yoon-sung featuring Ma Dong-Seok and Yoon Kye-sang. The story is based on the Chinese-Korean gangster clashes that took place in 2007 and are known the as 'Heuksapa Incident'. Ma Dong-Seok plays the role of a cop and Yoon Kye-sang as the villain. Both of them were marvelous with their characters.
So the story progresses, Ma Dong-Seok as Ma Seok-do is a police officer in Seoul. They try to minimize the clashing noise from the existing gangs by solving any clashes or crimes. After a few intro scenes, we got to see our villain, Yoon Kye-sang as Jang Chen, who is a debt collector, and here he comes into that area to collect a debt from a gang member. He makes his moves brutally, chopping people with an ax along with his two companions, whoever makes a hindrance in their way they just kill them brutally. To be honest, I have enjoyed this character more than the others.
Well, I do ask for forgiveness as those Korean names are kinda hard for me to keep track of so I am using them as little as I can. Also, it may be confusing for many of you to read this with those names, spoke those from my point of view.
Basically, the story is kinda simple. An area, where already gangsters exist, and from the outside a Chinese debt collector steps in with two more companions and starts taking control all over the gangs and their places. They are brutal, chopping them with axes and knives, with no mercy. The character here of Jang Chen was like a one man gangsta type, I must admire him, the way he performed his character was so perfect and enjoyable. And on the other hand, we had Ma Seok-do as the cop or you can say hero of the film and as I mentioned earlier I became a fan of him and so did he met my expectations on this film too. His detective works, his actions, particularly his slaps, damn! One slap to make a man down, hehe.
Come on, as I said the story is simple, not many twists and suspensions like thriller films, this is crime-related so it is an amazing package of actions. If you like Ma Dong-Seok or crime films then go for it, you won't regret it. I loved it and would like to rate it 8 out of 10.
