The Age of Adaline a romantic fantasy drama with a 1 hour 52 minutes run time. I saw it a while back but was reminded about it quite recently by a new friend. The movie stars Blake Lively in the title role, with Michiel Huisman, Kathy Baker, Amanda Crew, Harrison Ford, and Ellen Burstyn in supporting roles. The Age of Adaline is a movie about a woman who through a freak accident, does not grow old. She lives through wars, births a daughter, escape the law and changes her identity every few years just to stay ahead even as those around her; friends and family die off. In all of these things, she remains as young as she was on the night of the car accident that changed her life. I am a fan of the fantastic but that is not what draws me back to the movie again and again.
What has made me see the movie more than three times is my need to understand something about the character, Adaline. She is made an immortal by mere chance. What is she doing with this? Is this a gift or a curse? As luck would have it, she makes an early investment into a small company that later grew into a multibillion-dollar conglomerate, so she has the funds to do anything she wants. Yet, this unassuming woman works in a library, watching old movies, reading old books, living a simple life with her dog. Her story makes me think about how we rush after so much only to find that we already grew too old for it to matter. She had all the time in the world, so she took the time to enjoy life; to truly love, truly give, truly see.
There is also pain as she has to bond with a dog every time the old one grows too old and has to be put down then she has to watch her daughter age while she still remains a youthful beauty. In the character Adaline, I see the kind of woman I can be if I can let myself get away from the crunch of the crowd mentality, the need to do everything, the fear that there won’t be enough time to do it all. She allows herself to live. I can dream, can’t I? The movie is definitely worth the watch and the romance angle is beautiful as it is sad. Do go and see it. It would give you a different perspective on longevity and life in general. This movie would blow your mind.
