Summary
The movie revolves around Adam Reed who is a fighter pilot from the year 2050. The mission is to find his missing wife named Laura. And, as usual, things do not go according to the plan. So Adam ends up crashing into the year 2022. While trying to find his way back to his own time, he discovers himself - his twelve year old self.
Young Adam has lost his father a year and half back, so he is already struggling with the trauma. He is struggling with angel, loneliness and the feeling that no one is there to understand him. His mother tries her best, but it is hard for her as well - she is grieving as well. But Adam is young so we can understand it. Going through all this, and meeting with his future self complicates things for him. However, this complication is not all bad. Younger Adam is happy just because he has gained some muscles and a wife in the future.
As Younger Adam himself asks Older Adam: if he gets laid. Hahha, this scene really had me laughing out hard. But the thing is, Younger Adam has asthma. And he always gets bullied. So it is natural for him to ask about being "normal."
As the story moves forward, the two Adams work together because their lives, and most importantly entire future is at stake. They discover that time travel has been manipulated by Maya Sorian (the villain). She is a powerful and ambitious businesswoman who wants to control the technoog and use it to shape the future.
After some time, the movie moves from time travelling and scientific stuff to sort of family drama. Both Adams and their father - Louis.
For the most part movie is about: grief, regret, family, self-acceptance and letting go of the past. And from my understanding, Adam really does not care much about the future or the past, for him it is more important to understand what happened to him. Or most importantly, his beloved wife.
The Biggest Credit
It simply goes to Young Adam. I doubt there is any moment where the both Adams sound different. I mean it is easy for the adult version to carry out the acting; but the little one really felt like him. And important thing: it was his first role.
Then, for the Adult Adam, there is Ryan Reynolds. I do not think this man needs any introduction. He and his usual sarcastic humour is always there to brighten up the mood.
My take
Overall, the movie is not something of exceptional nature. I mean I did enjoy it, but there is nothing extraordinary to call it a must watch. Yes, it is family friendly. Furthermore, the big-mouths of Adams really makes the whole experience worth it. Yes the movie has time travel, action, comedy, futuristic technology and a decent drama, but nothing new. Just do not think a lot about it, take it as a fiction, and you will enjoy it. If you start to think about it, you are already done.
So, in the end, I would simply call it a "good, usual sci-fi movie." But Young Adam really deserves a watch for his nailed it role.
