One of the news that excited me the most during the last year was the announcement of the premiere of the long awaited remake of Rurouni Kenshin, an anime that I watched in my adolescence and that made me become much more familiar with Japanese culture and samurai. In those days it was broadcasted on an open TV channel and was known by the name of "Samurai X", I remember waiting anxiously for the afternoons to arrive, 5 p.m. to be more specific, so I could watch this jewel that was not so appreciated by my friends, in those times Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya got all the attention.
It was some years later that I found out that the original name was "Rurouni Kenshin", it seemed very strange to me, it took me a while to assimilate it because in my mind the name with the symbolic X kept echoing. I found out about this while I was researching on the internet if there was more material, it turns out that on TV they only broadcast the anime, so if there were OVAs or movies I had to look for them elsewhere, that's how I discovered with much amazement and happiness that there was still more to see.
There are some OVAs called "Tsuiokuhen" which show us the origin of the protagonist, it is there where I discovered that the real name of the wandering swordsman is not Kenshin Himura but Shinta, name that was changed by his sensei Hiko Seijuro (super ultra mega character) since he considered that it was a weak name for a samurai, that was one of the many scenes that impacted me the most. In these OVAs the character is developed in a very complete way, they are perfect to understand Kenshin's past and why he is considered a legend in the world of the sword, they have no waste and to this day I remember them with much amazement.
Una de las noticias que más me emocionó durante el último año fue el anuncio del estreno del tan esperado remake de Rurouni Kenshin, un anime que vi en mi adolescencia y que me hizo compenetrarme mucho más con la cultura japonesa y con los samurais. En aquellos tiempos lo transmitían en un canal de TV de señal abierta y se le conocía con el nombre de “Samurai X”, recuerdo que esperaba con muchas ansias que llegaran las tardes, 5 p.m. para ser más específico, para así poder presenciar esta joya que no era tan apreciada por mis amigos, en esos tiempos Dragon Ball y Saint Seiya se llevaban toda la atención.
Fue algunos años después que me enteré que el nombre original era “Rurouni Kenshin”, me pareció muy extraño, tardé un poco en asimilarlo porque en mi mente no dejaba de resonar el nombre con la simbólica X. Me enteré de esto mientras investigaba en internet sí había más material, resulta que en la TV solo transmitían el anime, por lo que si existían OVAs o películas pues debía buscarlas en otros lugares, es así que descubrí con mucho asombro y felicidad que aún había más por ver.
Existen unas OVAs llamadas “Tsuiokuhen” las cuales nos muestran el origen del protagonista, es allí donde descubrí que el nombre real del espadachín vagabundo no es Kenshin Himura sino Shinta, nombre que fue cambiado por su sensei Hiko Seijuro (super ultra mega personaje) ya que consideraba que era un nombre débil para un samurai, esa fue una de las tantas escenas que más me impactó. En estas OVAs se desarrolla al personaje de una manera muy completa, son perfectas para entender el pasado de Kenshin y porque es considerado una leyenda en el mundo de la espada, no tienen ningún tipo de desperdicio y al día de hoy las recuerdo con mucho asombro.
There are also other OVAs (Seisohen), but in this case they refer to the end of Kenshin's life, he is already old, retired from battles and in humanitarian or aid work far from home, I understand that the latter was done with the intention of redeeming himself for all the atrocities he did when he was "batousai". This is how we see a denouement of the character that continues to make my skin crawl, in fact, I think it was the first time I let out a tear while watching an anime, so it certainly touched my heart.
The movie, on the other hand, seems to be somewhat isolated from the stories of the anime, but it is actually very interesting and they try to link it with events of the past, so it turns out very well, although from my point of view it is nothing transcendental. There are also some Live-Action that are so far along with One Piece, the best adaptations I've seen so far, but I can tell you about that in another post.
Now, the original anime is what I like the most, apart from the little and imperceptible filler it had, we can find characters with very strong and imposing personalities, besides, it is one of those cases in which the villains are the ones who entertain us the most, they have a very strong presence, exceptional abilities and reasoning for their actions that go beyond the mere idea of having power, they all suffered in some way in their past and that has made them make decisions which they seek to justify by all means.
También hay otras OVAs (Seisohen), pero en este caso son referentes al final de la vida de Kenshin, ya está mayor, retirado de las batallas y en labores humanitarias o de ayuda lejos de casa, entiendo que esto último lo hizo con la intención de redimirse de todas las atrocidades que hizo cuando era “batousai”. Es así que vemos un desenlace del personaje que sigue erizándome la piel, de hecho, creo que fue la primera vez que solté una lágrima mientras veía un anime, así que sin duda me llegó al corazón.
La película por su parte, parece ser algo aislada de las historias del anime, pero en realidad está planteada de una manera muy interesante y la intentan enlazar con eventos del pasado, resultando entonces muy bien, aunque desde mi punto de vista no es nada trascendental. También hay algunos Live-Action que son hasta ahora junto con One Piece, las mejores adaptaciones que he visto hasta ahora, pero de eso puedo hablarles en otro post.
Ahora, el anime original es lo que más me gusta, apartando el poco e imperceptible relleno que tuvo, podemos encontrar personajes con personalidades muy fuertes e imponentes, además, es de esos casos en los que los villanos son quienes más nos entretienen, tienen una presencia muy fuerte, habilidades excepcionales y razonamientos por sus acciones que van más allá de la sola idea de tener poder, todos sufrieron de alguna manera en su pasado y eso los ha hecho tomar decisiones las cuales buscan justificar por todos los medios.
If you have read this far, perhaps you can understand that Rurouni Kenshin is a very serious anime, in fact I think that in certain aspects it is not for children, of course, there are moments of comedy (as in almost 99% of anime), but they are not the strongest part of the plot and are not very memorable. Another aspect that I want to highlight of this anime, are the different techniques used by the swordsmen, to this day I still watch with much amazement and admiration the "Amakakeru Ryo no Hirameki" of Kenshin, the way in which they animate it and its depth is surpassed by very few techniques. Now, maybe you can tell me that nowadays there are anime in which the techniques are animated in much more spectacular ways, but let's not lose sight of the fact that in Rurouni Kenshin the techniques were not as fictional as in most anime.
So I consider Rurouni Kenshin to be one of the most significant and interesting works I have seen so far, but why the title of the post says that I feel pain for the remake?, well, it turns out that in the last chapters I have seen how the essence and good reputation of the original story is distorted. There is filler that adds absolutely nothing and seems like a waste of time, the levels of violence have decreased, we don't see the rawness in the deaths that we used to see before, there is little blood and the characters are now more relaxed and funny, I could even say that this remake is made for a younger audience or for the masses.
The remake is still on air and I'm still waiting for more interesting things to happen, I understand that they want to stretch the amount of chapters as much as possible since the original anime is actually not very long, but so far none of the new stories have pleased me, they lack depth and soul, I have not yet seen that strong and serious character that the samurai used to convey. I hope then that the next weeks this will change progressively, the Rurouni Kenshin universe is one that has many opportunities to give us epic stories and plots.
Si has leído hasta acá, quizá podrás entender que Rurouni Kenshin es un anime bastante serio, de hecho creo que en ciertos aspectos no es para niños, claro, hay momentos de comedia (como en prácticamente el 99% de los anime), pero no constituyen el fuerte de la trama y son poco recordables. Otro aspecto que quiero resaltar de este anime, son las diferentes técnicas que usan los espadachines, al día de sigo viendo con mucho asombro y admiración el “Amakakeru Ryo no Hirameki” de Kenshin, la forma en la que lo animan y su profundidad es superado por muy pocas técnicas. Ahora, quizá puedas decirme que actualmente hay anime en los que las técnicas son animadas de maneras mucho más espectaculares, pero no perdamos de vista que en Rurouni Kenshin las técnicas no eran tan ficticias como en la mayoría de los anime.
Es así que considero que Rurouni Kenshin es de las obras más significativas e interesantes que he visto hasta ahora, pero ¿Por qué el título del post dice que siento dolor por el remake?, bueno, resulta que en los últimos capítulos he visto como se desvirtúa la esencia y buena reputación de la historia original. Hay un relleno que no suma absolutamente nada y que parece una pérdida de tiempo, los niveles de violencia han disminuido, no vemos la crudeza en las muertes que antes veíamos, hay poca sangre y los personajes ahora son más relajados y graciosos, podría decir incluso que este remake está hecho para un público más joven o para las masas.
El remake sigue en emisión y yo sigo esperando que cosas más interesantes ocurran, entiendo que quieran estirar la cantidad de capítulos lo más posible ya que en realidad el anime original no es muy largo, pero hasta ahora ninguna de las nuevas historias me ha gustado, carecen de profundidad y de alma, no he visto aún ese carácter fuerte y serio que los samurais solían transmitir. Espero entonces que las próximas semanas esto vaya cambiando progresivamente, el universo de Rurouni Kenshin es uno que tiene muchas oportunidades de regalarnos historias y tramas épicas.
