Hello movie and TV-loving friends, I hope you are doing very well. I recently watched the much-talked-about movie Backrooms. I really didn’t know much about this movie until my sister recommended it to me; it’s not my favorite style of movie, but it definitely managed to grab my attention until the very end. It might seem a bit senseless, but I feel the movie has just the right touch of suspense and mystery as we discover that world hidden behind the walls of an old furniture store.
The plot introduces us to the main character named Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a man dedicated to his job at a furniture store with a rather chaotic life, as he himself explains in his therapy sessions with a psychiatrist he visits regularly. Clark has serious anxiety and anger issues, mostly due to the separation from his wife and how much he emphasizes that he is the only one who takes care of everything (both financially and personally) regarding what is needed at his home—or what used to be his home when he lived with his wife.
He really hates his job, but he also hates that he isn't rewarded or validated as a responsible man who gets things done when it comes to money matters, or at least that's what he implies in therapy. However, one night while spending the evening at the store—which is basically where he works and also lives—he notices something strange with the lights, leading him to the attic. There, he finds a wall that he can strangely pass through, entering a room with yellow lights and mindlessly stacked furniture.
This scared him a lot. He told his psychiatrist about it, but she didn't believe him—at least until she saw it with her own eyes. The psychiatrist, Mary (Renate Reinsve), is another main character in the movie who gradually gains more screen time as the story progresses. There were many things I liked and found interesting about the movie, such as the fact that it was inspired by YouTube videos where people create environments using computers—mostly places like rooms, pools, and abandoned buildings. These were discovered by A24, who then reached out to the young creator behind the video series featuring these strange rooms with yellow lights.
Additionally, since it was directed by Kane Parsons (Kane Pixels), the creator of those YouTube videos, it was a film that grips you not only through the uncertainty of not knowing what will happen next, as the characters venture into this place without knowing how to get back out. What breathed even more life into these YouTube videos was the addition of the characters' backstory and how their memories were displayed in a eerie way inside the rooms. That was something I really enjoyed, as I had never seen a story developed where nothing makes sense, yet at the same time, it all does.
From a psychological standpoint, you can see how the characters enter an unknown territory where they confront their own memories. Although they try to escape this place, in the end, not many details are given about what actually happens to them. I think it has an open ending, allowing everyone to have a different interpretation of the story. Maybe you shouldn't overthink it too much, but I think it's cool that a place like this exists inside another completely unknown one, where memories can be experienced in a real way, and where no one knows for sure why such a place exists or who created it—if anyone did at all.
I really liked the movie. I saw that it's going to have a second part, although it won't be directly connected to this first film. I'm excited to see how they will make the second one and what kinds of stories might come from it. I give it an 8/10 because I found it quite original, even if a bit long, but I liked the ending and I think it's worth watching at least once.

Hola amigos amantes del cine y la televisión, espero que se encuentren muy bien. Hace poco vi la tan conversada película Backrooms, realmente no tenía mucha idea de esta película hasta que mi hermana me la recomendó, no es de mi estilo de películas favoritas pero si que logró captar mi atención hasta terminarla. Puede parecer un poco sin sentido pero siento que la película tiene el toque necesario de suspenso y de misterio mientras vamos descubriendo ese mundo que está detrás de las paredes de una vieja tienda de muebles.
La trama nos lleva a conocer al personaje principal llamado Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) un hombre dedicado a su trabajo en una tienda de muebles y con una vida bastante caótica por lo que el mismo cuenta en sus sesiones de terapia con una psiquiatra que visita continuamente. Clark tiene serios problemas de ansiedad y de ira, sobre todo por la separación de su esposa y lo mucho que el resalta que es el único que se encarga de todo (tanto económicamente como personalmente) de las cosas que necesitan en su casa o la que era su casa cuando vivía con su esposa.
El realmente odia su trabajo pero además odia que no se le retribuya o se le afirme que si es un hombre responsable y que si es el que más resuelve en cuanto a temas de dinero o al menos eso es lo que el da a entender en la terapia. Sin embargo, un día pasando la noche en la tienda que es básicamente su lugar para trabajar y donde también vive. Se da cuenta que hay algo extraño con las luces del lugar lo que lo lleva al ático y se encuentra con una pared que extrañamente puede traspasar encontrándose con una habitación de luces amarillas y con muebles apilados sin sentido.
Esto lo asustó mucho, se lo contó a la psiquiatra pero ella no le creyó al menos hasta que lo vio con sus propios ojos. La psiquiatra Mary (Renate Reinsve) es otro de los personajes principales de la película y que luego va teniendo más aparición dentro de la historia. Hay muchas cosas que me gustaron y me parecieron interesantes de la película como el hecho de que fue inspirada de videos de YouTube donde algunas personas se encargan de crear escenarios a través de la computadora y casi o la mayoría son lugares como cuartos, piscinas, edificios abandonados, que fueron descubiertos por A24 y se comunicaron con el joven que creó la serie de vídeos donde se veían estas extrañas habitaciones con luces amarillas.
Además de que fue dirigida por Kane Parsons (Kane Pixels) el creador de estos videos de YouTube, fue una película que no solo te atrapa por la incertidumbre de no saber que va a suceder, los personajes se adentran a este lugar sin conocer cómo pueden después salir de allí. Lo que le dio más vida a estos videos de YouTube fue el agregado de la historia de los personajes y como la forma en la que sus recuerdos fueron mostrados de una manera tétrica dentro de las habitaciones, fue algo que realmente me gustó porque nunca había visto la forma en la que pudieran desarrollar una historia en donde nada tiene sentido pero al mismo tiempo si lo tiene.
Desde la parte psicológica se puede ver como los personajes entran en un territorio desconocido donde se enfrentan a sus propios recuerdos, aunque intenta escapar de este lugar al final no dan muchos detalles de que es lo que realmente sucede con ellos. Creo que tiene un final abierto y cada persona puede tener una interpretación diferente de la historia. Tal vez no hay que hacerle mucho cerebro pero creo que es genial que exista un lugar dentro de otro totalmente desconocido donde los recuerdos puedan ser vistos de forma real y también donde no se sepa a ciencia cierta porque existe un lugar como este o quién es el encargado de haberlo creado, si es que existe uno.
Me gustó mucho la película, vi que va a tener una segunda parte aunque no va a estar relacionada como tal con esta primera película. Me emociona saber cómo harán la segunda y que tipo de historias pueden venir a partir de allí. Le doy un 8/10 porque me pareció bastante original aunque un poco extensa, pero el final me gusto y creo que vale la pena verla al menos una vez.
