Hello, film and TV lovers! I'm glad to be back sharing a new review with all of you. There are times when I just go with the flow and pick random movies to see how they are—they tend to be lesser-known films or ones with very little promotion, and that usually catches my attention. The movie I'm here to review today is Run the Tide, directed by Soham Mehta. It tells a fairly heavy story, but I was left quite unconvinced by the actors' performances and the script.
The plot tells the story of Rey (Taylor Lautner), a young man who grew up in the absence of his mother, a woman who struggled with many vices in her life, including alcohol and drugs. This led her to end up in prison, though watching the movie, you never really learn the specific details of why she landed there. Rey grows up holding deep resentment toward her and carrying the massive responsibility of taking care of and raising his only younger brother, Oliver (Nico Christou).
It's a huge challenge for Rey to raise his brother, especially since Oliver, being so young, has very few memories of their mother yet still holds onto the dream of the three of them becoming a family again. However, this is something Rey refuses to accept. Driven by fear and doubt, he makes the decision to take Oliver on a trip—a getaway that quickly turns into a journey to escape their mother, Lola (Constance Zimmer), and her former partner, who at one point played an important role as a father figure in Rey and Oliver's lives.
This movie was released in 2016. I had never stumbled upon photos or videos of it, but I came across it on a streaming platform and decided to give it a chance because the premise sounded interesting. I enjoy drama stories, especially those reflecting real-life situations. Still, I couldn't connect much with the characters. I think the most compelling performance came from Oliver, who portrays a very scared yet dreamy child—you can really feel his pain and his mixed feelings toward his mother.
As for the rest, Taylor Lautner's performance wasn't the best; it felt a bit empty, even though you could tell he was trying hard to convey feelings of anguish and resentment toward his mother. I just didn't connect with the story. I felt it lacked a better script or perhaps a different casting choice—maybe things would have turned out differently if those aspects had been handled better. The only redeeming factor is that the movie is only an hour and a half long, so they didn't drag things out, which would have made the story even heavier and more tiring to watch.
Overall, the story touches on a tough subject due to the realities of living with an addicted parent who ends up in prison. That's probably why I wanted to watch it, expecting something more, but sometimes you look for one thing and end up getting the complete opposite. The takeaway for me is that despite apologies and changes in behavior from the mother, the memories and psychological scars left on a child living through a situation of this magnitude are extremely difficult to overcome. You can clearly see that in Rey and in the decision he makes at the end of the film. I'd love to know what you think of this movie. Have you seen it yet?

¡Hola amigos amantes del cine y la televisión! Me alegra estar nuevamente compartiendo una nueva reseña con todos ustedes. Hay ocasiones en las que me dejo llevar y escojo películas al azar para ver qué tal están, suelen ser peliculas poco vistas o con muy poca promoción y eso suele llamar mi atención. La película que les vengo a reseñar es Run the Tide del director Soham Metah y que cuenta una historia bastante fuerte pero muy poco convencida quedé con la interpretación de los actores o del guión.
La trama nos cuenta la historia de Rey (Taylor Lautner) un joven que creció con la ausencia de su madre quien es una mujer que tuvo muchos vicios en su vida uno de ellos fue el alcohol y las drogas. Esto le hizo terminar en la cárcel sin saber detalles viendo la película por qué razón terminó en la cárcel. Rey termina creciendo con un gran resentimiento hacia ella y tiene la gran responsabilidad de cuidar y criar a su único hermano menor Oliver (Nico Christou).
Es un gran reto que Rey decida criar a su hermano, ya que esté siendo tan pequeño tiene muy pocos recuerdos de su madre pero aún así tiene la ilusión de volver a ser una familia los tres. Pero es algo que Rey no acepta del todo, y con un poco de miedo y dudas, toma la decisión de llevarse a Oliver a un paseo que se convierte en un viaje para escapar de su madre Lola (Constance Zimmer) y quien fue en algún momento su pareja, quien cumplió una parte importante de ser como un padre en la vida de Rey y Oliver.
Esta película fue estrenada en el año 2016, no encontré nunca fotos o vídeos de ésta, sin embargo me encontré con la película en una plataforma de streaming y decidí darle una oportunidad porque la trama parecía interesante. Me gustan estas historias de drama y de historias que pueden suceder en la vida real. Pero no pude conectar mucho con los personajes creo que el más rescatable fue Oliver, quien muestra en su actuación a un niño muy asustado y muy soñador, se siente su dolor y sus sentimientos hacia su madre.
De resto la actuación de Taylor Lautner no fue la mejor, la sentí vacía aunque vi que si se esforzaba en mostrar los sentimientos de angustia y de resentimiento hacia su madre. Pero no conecte con la historia, me pareció que le faltó tal vez un mejor guión o una selección de casting con otros actores, tal vez hubiera sido diferente si estos aspectos hubieran sido bien seleccionados. Lo único que es aceptable es que la película dure una hora y media, y que no se extendieran tanto lo que podría hacer la historia aún más pesada y cansada de ver.
En general la historia es fuerte, por las situaciones que se pueden vivir con un padre o madre adicto que además terminen en la cárcel. Tal vez por esto quería ver la película esperando otra cosa, pero a veces pasa que buscamos algo y terminamos viendo lo contrario. El mensaje que me queda de la película es que a pesar de las disculpas, de los cambios de comportamiento por parte de la madre, aún así los recuerdos y las marcas psicológicas que pueden dejar en un niño vivir con una situación de esta magnitud, es algo que es tan difícil de superar. Y eso se puede notar en Rey y en la decisión que toma al final de la película. Me gustaría saber que piensan de esta película, ¿Ya la han visto?
