I remember when I saw the trailer for this movie it immediately caught my attention, both because of the ghost theme (or at least that's what it looked like) and because I've been a fan of horror movies since I was very young, so it was clearly a movie I had to see. Yesterday while talking with a friend about horror movies of the last few years, this was one of the first that came to my mind, so I decided to watch it one more time and that's why today I want to talk to you about "The Black Phone".

This film was released a little over a year ago, on June 24, 2022 and was directed by director Scott Derrickson, who has been present in other great horror productions, as well as others not far from horror, but just as good. In this case, the story that we are presented revolves around a 13 year old boy who is kidnapped by a homicidal and sadistic masked man who locks him in a basement where he is completely incommunicado and although there is a phone on the wall, it does not work, although the boy seems to hear it ringing on occasion.

The film is set in 1978 and begins showing us a baseball game where our protagonist named Finney loses the game, but ends up winning a friend of the opposing team, but it is something that will not last for long, because in the following scenes, the boy from the opposing team ends up being kidnapped. Finney lives with his father (a widowed and alcoholic man who mistreats them) and his sister Gwendolyn. When both siblings are on their way to school they see many posters of Bruce (the boy from the opposing team) who has been missing for several days and they doubt that they can find him.

When they both arrive at the school, they find two boys fighting, one of them is a bully who ends up getting beaten up by another boy named Robin. The brothers continue on their way and the brothers start commenting on an urban legend, where they talk about a guy called The Raptor who kidnaps kids. For some reasons Finney meets Robin and they become friends, although again this would not last long, because now Robin is also kidnapped by The Raptor and now, a new missing poster is added with Robin's name.

A few days later, after leaving school and walking home alone, Finney comes across a person who drops some things and ends up helping him, but he realizes that it is The Raptor, but it is too late and he throws gas in his mouth and throws him into his truck. Finney wakes up locked in what appears to be a basement and in front of him is The Raptor, who terrorizes him on multiple occasions. In the place where he is there is a phone, which The Raptor told him that it does not work because it is disconnected, but at night Finney hears it ring and when he answers, he hears Bruce, but he does not remember his name or who he was when he was alive, but he will try to help Finney.

The truth is that from the beginning I would say that the story grabs you, the simple fact of knowing that the scariest thing we will find here is not a kind of monster or ghosts that we are used to in horror movies, the villain really is a human, who by his own decision kidnaps, tortures and murders his victims, It is always interesting (talking about entertainment of course) to see the darkest thing that a human being can have in his being and I would say that in this story you can appreciate it to perfection and it is a style of terror that really goes deep.

The story of the film in general seems very good to me, from the beginning that we are presented with the situation in subtle ways is a good way to direct the attention to its highest point and thus end up surprising us. What I find most interesting is how also here we are presented with some kind of ghosts to call them somehow that are not really bad or anything like that, which contradicts the normal horror stories and I found this very interesting, it's not like there are no other movies where similar things happen, but in this case seeing it in a horror movie really gives a twist to the plot.

Honestly I would say that in terms of horror movies of the last years, this is one of the best, although it's not very difficult to be one, but don't get me wrong, lately horror movies don't cause terror anymore, so finding one where they do, without the need to use the well known "Jump Scares" which honestly is one of the most obvious things and that in movies like this is not the case is really something to be thankful for, because they really try to put together a good atmosphere, a good story and good characters that incite fear, hate and repulsion, I would say that this is how horror movies should be, something well constructed and not a mixture of sounds placed to scare linked to scene changes.

This is a movie that should be seen at least once in your life, because it represents a quite different kind of horror, but with the same and greater intensity than in other films with much more paranormal themes, so if you have not yet had the opportunity to see it, I recommend it, it is totally worth it and if you want to enjoy it as best as possible, I recommend that you see it at night and with headphones on if possible, the film ends up manipulating all your senses and making you part of it.

Recuerdo que cuando vi el tráiler de esta película me llamó la atención de inmediato, tanto por el tema de los fantasmas (o al menos eso era lo que parecía) y porque soy un fanático de las películas de terror desde muy pequeño, por lo que claramente era una película que tenía que ver. Ayer mientras conversaba con una amiga sobre películas de terror de los últimos años, esta fue una de las primeras que me vino a la mente, por lo que decidí volver a verla una vez más y por eso el día de hoy quiero hablarles de “El teléfono negro”.

Esta película se estrenó hace poco más de un año, el 24 de junio del 2022 y fue dirigida por el director Scott Derrickson, quien ha estado presente en otras grandes producciones de terror, así como otras no alejadas del terror, pero igual de buenas. En este caso, la historia que se nos presenta gira entorno a un niño de 13 años que es secuestrado por un homicida y sádico enmascarado que lo encierra en un sótano donde está completamente incomunicado y aunque haya un teléfono en la pared, el mismo no funciona, aunque al niño le parece oírle sonar en algunas ocasiones.

La película nos ubica en el año 1978 y comienza mostrándonos un juego de beisbol donde nuestro protagonista llamado Finney pierde el partido, pero termina ganando un amigo del equipo contrario, pero es algo que no durará por mucho tiempo, porque en las siguientes escenas, el chico del equipo contrario termina siendo secuestrado. Finney vive junto a su padre (un señor viudo y alcohólico que los maltrata) y su hermana Gwendolyn. Cuando ambos hermanos van de camino a la escuela ven muchos carteles Bruce (el chico del equipo contrario) quien lleva desaparecido varios días y se duda mucho de que puedan encontrarle.

Cuando ambos llegan a la escuela, se encuentran con dos chicos peleando, uno de ellos es un abusón que termina recibiendo una paliza por otro chico llamado Robin. Los hermanos siguen su camino y estos empiezan a comentar sobre una leyenda urbana, donde hablan de un tipo que se llama El Raptor quien secuestra a los niños. Por algunos motivos Finney conoce a Robin y se hacen amigos, aunque nuevamente esto no duraría mucho, porque ahora Robin también es secuestrado por El Raptor y ahora, un nuevo cartel de desaparecido se suma con el nombre de Robin.

Algunos días después, luego de salir de clases e ir caminando sólo de regreso a casa, Finney se cruza con una persona a quién se le caen algunas cosas y éste termina ayudándole, pero se da cuenta que es El Raptor, pero ya es demasiado tarde y éste le echa gas en la boca y lo arroja hacia su camioneta. Finney despierta encerrado en lo que parece ser un sótano y delante de él está El Raptor, quien le aterroriza en múltiples ocasiones. En el lugar donde se encuentra hay un teléfono, el cual El Raptor le dijo que no funcionaba por estar desconectado, pero por las noches Finney lo escucha sonar y cuando contesta, escucha a Bruce, pero éste no recuerda ni su nombre ni quién fue cuando estuvo vivo, pero intentará ayudar a Finney.

La verdad es que desde un principio diría que la historia te atrapa, el simple hecho de saber que lo más aterrador que encontraremos aquí no es una especie de monstruo o fantasmas a los que estamos acostumbrados en películas de terror, el villano realmente es un humano, quien por su propia decisión secuestra, tortura y asesina a sus victimas lo que hace que uno se interese mucho más de la historia o al menos así fue en mi caso, siempre resulta interesante (hablando de entretenimiento claro) el ver lo más oscuro que puede tener un ser humano en su ser y diría que en esta historia se puede apreciar a la perfección y es un estilo de terror que realmente cala hondo.

La historia de la película en general me parece muy buena, desde un principio que nos vayan presentando la situación de maneras sutiles es una buena manera de dirigir la atención hasta su punto más alto y así terminar sorprendiéndonos. Lo que me resulta más interesante es el cómo también aquí nos presentan alguna especie de fantasmas por llamarles de alguna manera que realmente no son malos ni nada por el estilo, lo cual contradice las historias normales de terror y esto me pareció muy interesante, no es como que no existan otras películas donde ocurran cosas similares no, pero en este caso verlo en una película de terror realmente le da una vuelta a la trama.

Honestamente diría que en términos de películas de terror de los últimos años, esta es una de las mejores, aunque tampoco es que sea muy difícil serlo, pero no me malentiendan, es que últimamente las películas de terror ya no causan terror, por lo que encontrar una donde sí, sin necesidad de usar los conocidos “Sustos repentinos” que honestamente es una de las cosas más obvias y que en películas como esta no sea el caso de verdad que es algo que agradecer, porque realmente intentan armar un buen ambiente, una buena historia y buenos personajes que te incitan miedo, odio y repulsión, diría que de esta manera es como deberían ser las películas de terror, algo bien construido y no una mezcla de sonidos colocados para asustar ligado a cambios de escenas.

Ésta es una película que debería verse al menos una vez en la vida, porque representa una especie de terror bastante diferente, pero con la misma y mayor intensidad que en otras películas con temas mucho más paranormales, por lo que si todavía no han tenido la oportunidad de verla, se las recomiendo, vale totalmente la pena y si quieren disfrutarla lo mejor posible, les recomiendo que la vean de noche y con audífonos puestos de ser posible, la película termina manipulando todos tus sentidos y haciéndote parte de ella.
