Jackass: Best and Last - Review [ES - EN]

Después de un exitoso e impactante show que generó una inesperada franquicia de películas, "Jackass" llega a su fin con su quinto largometraje, ofreciendo nuevamente un estilo de comedia extremadamente físico, muy irresponsable, asqueroso y sí, muy, pero muy cómico. Siendo completamente sincero, el estreno y regreso de esta banda de locos en "Forever" (cuarto film), llegué a pensar que fue un gran cierre y realmente me sorprendió que decidieran hacer una nueva película y más por cómo las acrobacias y demás hazañas hechas finalizaron de manera peligrosa; a eso debo sumar un factor importante, el cual es la edad de cada uno de los integrantes de "Jackass", ya que esa juventud que podía hacerlos ver como invencibles, por supuesto que atrás ya hace tiempo, y es que son 26 años de locura en donde nunca habían dejado de poner en riesgo su vida.

After a successful and shocking show that spawned an unexpected film franchise, "Jackass" comes to an end with its fifth feature film, once again offering an extremely physical, very reckless, disgusting, and yes, very, very funny brand of comedy. To be completely honest, when this crazy crew made their comeback with “Forever” (their fourth film), I thought it was a great finale, and I was genuinely surprised they decided to make another movie—especially given how the stunts and other feats they pulled off ended in such a dangerous way; to that I must add an important factor, which is the age of each of the “Jackass” members, since that youth that once made them seem invincible is, of course, long gone—and the fact is, it’s been 26 years of madness during which they’ve never stopped putting their lives at risk.

Personalmente, al tener noción del film, no quise ver absolutamente nada promocional porque no quería ver ninguno de los actos que hubiera en el final; tampoco tenía altas expectativas a sabiendas de que era muy difícil repetir hazañas peligrosas, pero sí quería ver si eran capaces de generar en mí ese entretenimiento extraño de ver a otros hacerse daño. Esta película es verdaderamente una despedida, ya que cuenta con un relato en donde está demostrando que el líder y la cara de esta banda de enfermos, Johnny Knoxville, demuestra en la primera escena que su cordura dejó de existir hace tiempo y justamente esa escena, aunque acertada por ser el origen de esa gran idea, posiblemente eleve la vara muy alto, lo cual hace que las escenas posteriores no generen ese gran impacto.

Personally, since I was already familiar with the movie, I didn’t want to watch any promotional material at all because I didn’t want to see any of the stunts that would be in the finale; I also didn’t have high expectations, knowing that it was very difficult to repeat dangerous stunts, but I did want to see if they were capable of giving me that strange sense of entertainment that comes from watching others hurt themselves. This movie is truly a farewell, as it tells a story in which the leader and face of this band of lunatics, Johnny Knoxville, demonstrates in the very first scene that he lost his sanity long ago. And it’s precisely that scene—though effective as the origin of this great idea—that possibly sets the bar too high, which means the subsequent scenes don’t have quite the same impact.

Mientras transcurría el primer acto del film, sentí algo de decepción al ver que su composición era hacer bromas y hazañas no muy cómicas, físicas o repetitivas, y el usar escenas de filmes anteriores, así como de la serie que les dio origen; eso generó en mí cierta preocupación al creer que este no sería un film con muchas escenas nuevas, pero la realidad es que, teniendo la noción de factores anteriormente citados, creo que tanto Knoxville como Jeff Tremaine, director de todas las películas y serie de TV, junto a uno de los productores, Spike Jonze, sabían en qué momento ir mostrando escenas nuevas, lo cual fue bastante acertado porque fueron creciendo en todo, tanto en lo físico, asqueroso y cómico.

As the first act of the film unfolded, I felt somewhat disappointed to see that it consisted of jokes and stunts that weren’t very funny—physical or repetitive—and that it relied on scenes from previous films, as well as from the TV series that inspired them; that made me a bit worried, as I thought this wouldn’t be a movie with many new scenes, but the reality is that, bearing in mind the factors mentioned above, I believe that both Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine—director of all the films and the TV series—along with one of the producers, Spike Jonze—knew exactly when to introduce new scenes, which was quite effective because they kept escalating in every way—physically, in terms of grossness, and in terms of humor.

Jackass: Best and Last no es para nada la mejor de la franquicia, pero creo que como final acierta porque se adecuó con lo que actualmente pueden ofrecer todos los que forman parte de esos locos; esa constante necesidad de hacerse daño, en una tonta competencia para probar justamente quien es más tonto, creo que ahora más que nunca es nostálgico ver lo que hacen y ahora con este final me doy cuenta de eso, me refiero a que de niño con mis amigos nos retamos a hacer cualquier cosa que pudiera ser o sentirse peligroso, posiblemente sin medir las consecuencias y ver a estás personas que superan la edad de 50 años seguir haciendo lo mismo, posiblemente sea lo más estupido que pueda ver en un film y repito, no es la mejor, pero tiene momentos únicos, sumamente divertidos, asquerosos y otros que absolutamente nadie debería repetir sin importar que tan entretenido crean que puede ser. No hay duda de que esta fue una despedida para los fieles fans y creo que el estrenarla en las salas de cine fue muy arriesgado, pero a pesar de todo eso, es un correcto final.

I'm convinced that Jackass: Best and Last is by no means the best in the franchise, but I think it works as a finale because it fits with what everyone involved in that crazy crew can offer these days; that constant need to hurt themselves, in a silly competition to prove exactly who’s the biggest fool—I think it’s more nostalgic than ever to watch what they do, and now, with this finale, I realize that. I mean, as a kid, my friends and I would challenge each other to do anything that might be or feel dangerous, possibly without considering the consequences, and seeing these people—who are over 50—still doing the same thing, is probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in a movie. And I’ll say it again: it’s not the best, but it has unique moments—some extremely funny, some disgusting, and others that absolutely no one should ever try to replicate, no matter how entertaining they might think it could be. There’s no doubt that this was a farewell to the loyal fans, and I think releasing it in theaters was a huge risk, but despite all that, it’s a fitting ending.
