“Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” is the third film by director and screenwriter ** Jane Schoenbrun**, who once again draws on themes such as sexual identity, nonconformity, fantasy, reality, and (in a way) horror to tell the story of “Kris Williams,” a young filmmaker who has been given the opportunity to shoot a new movie within the Camp Miasma slasher franchise, a series Kris is a huge fan of. That’s why she’s decided to go in search of the franchise’s first “Final Girl,” the mysterious “Billy Presley,” who has stayed away from the entertainment world until she decided to meet Kris—and it is precisely that encounter that could reawaken a lethal desire lurking deep within the lake at Camp Miasma.

Surely, when watching this movie, it becomes clear that it serves as a satire on the way Hollywood treats horror classics—in what is possibly an “obligation” to update them, but what they’re really trying to do is make those updates fully resonate with the current generation in order to generate more profits. This observation rings very true within the film because this critique of how remakes or new sequels are handled in franchises dating back more than 40 years forms the basis of the film’s protagonist’s story and delves into the behavior not only of new filmmakers but also of how they clearly represent what we currently consume in many movies; this makes Schoenbrun one of the most “meta” films I’ve seen in years. It’s worth noting that the meta genre means the characters in a film are aware they’re in a movie, playing on clichés of the genre the film itself belongs to—horror, comedy, action—and in this case, it’s among the best I’ve seen in that format.

Another aspect I mentioned earlier regarding one of the characteristics of Schoenbrun’s works is the sense of not belonging experienced by the main character; that feeling that she needs a place where she belongs in order to be happy is what largely drives the protagonist to experience events that are both fantastical and real, in order to achieve self-discovery—which may or may not be satisfying in the end. I appreciate the themes explored by the director and screenwriter of this film because, despite incorporating fantasy into the narrative, she doesn’t feel the need to hide the story’s true theme; on the contrary, she is very direct and easy to understand.

As for the horror in Teenagers Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, it all comes down to the fact that there’s this great genre (which I appreciate), namely the slasher; Schoenbrun creates very graphic death scenes with more than enough gore, which makes the scenes a lot of fun; in fact, the film’s dark humor stems precisely from these multiple deaths—they’re quite exaggerated and comical, largely because of their satirical nature. The influence of films like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp is more than evident, as are other classics like Halloween and another meta-slasher like Scream, but this film specifically uses a key rule or cliché in this genre to turn it into a central theme: sexual desire among the characters, which always tends to lead to death because, as you know, “if you have sex in a slasher movie, that means you’ll fall victim to the killer”—and it is precisely this rule that creates immense pressure on the main character, which becomes the film’s central driving force from the middle through the end.

I’m fully convinced that this film won’t be for everyone; I personally enjoyed it because I really liked the whole story—I liked the director’s take on the deaths themselves, which, despite their simplicity, made an impact due to the large amount of blood; as well as its adherence to the numerous clichés characteristic of this style of film, which generates a necessary (according to its director and screenwriter) critique—something I think she handled very well because it didn’t feel like an attack on the genre, but rather a tool to make the story work; I think Schoenbrun satirizes many things, especially itself—given how the film studio and fans of both the film and cinema likely view it. Personally, I was surprised by a movie I didn’t expect much from, and it has motivated me to watch this filmmaker’s first film; I look forward to seeing more of her future works.

This really made me laugh: "If you have sex in a slasher movie, that means you'll be the killer's next victim." I was just talking about this the other day—you know where the scene is headed. There are certain patterns that keep coming up—I wonder if they really work?
