En tu hogar, en tu trabajo o en cualquier lugar, la maldad siempre acecha... "The Dark and the Wicked"
¿Que es importante en una película de terror? ¿Escenas "Jump Scare"? ¿Sangre? ¿El demonio que acecha? ¿El asesino sobrenatural? Hay muchas características que pueden crear impacto en una película de terror, ahora a esto puedo anexar algo que puede ser muy importante como es una historia que sirve de base y que se puede potenciar con las características anteriormente dichas, a pesar de todo esto siempre he creído que tener estas ideas y unirlas en un solo proyecto, podrán servir si se hacen las cosas bien.

At home, at work, or anywhere, evil is always haunting.... "The Dark and the Wicked"
What's important in a horror movie - Jump Scare scenes? Blood? The lurking demon? The supernatural killer? There are many features that can create impact in a horror film, now to this I can add something that can be very important as it is a story that serves as a base and that can be enhanced with the above features, despite all this I have always believed that having these ideas and unite them in a single project, can serve if you do things right.
Hace días realice una reseña de un film que me sorprendió por su simpleza y su historia directa, "Saint Maud", uno de los dos filmes del 2020 que quería ver, el otro film es uno el cual había leído positivas opiniones y que para estas fechas cercanas a Halloween, empezaron nuevamente a recomendarla, me estoy refiriendo a "The Dark and the Wicked", en esta película vemos la historia de dos hermanos que deciden regresar a la granja en dónde crecieron por la grave enfermedad que padece su padre, desde el momento de su llegada la cual es rechazada por su madre, comienzan a experimentar situaciones perturbadoras que les hará saber que algo oscuro y maligno está con ellos.
Days ago I made a review of a film that surprised me for its simplicity and direct story, "Saint Maud", one of the two films of 2020 that I wanted to see, the other film is one which I had read positive opinions and that for these dates close to Halloween, they began again to recommend it, I am referring to "The Dark and the Wicked", in this film we see the story of two brothers who decide to return to the farm where they grew up because of the serious illness that their father suffers, from the moment of their arrival which is rejected by their mother, they begin to experience disturbing situations that will let them know that something dark and evil is with them.
Bryan Bertino que ganó fama dentro del género con un buen film cómo es "The Strangers" (2008), nos relata en esta oportunidad una historia mal sana en todos los sentidos, existe un gran número de temas escondidos en este corto y directo film sobre una maldición y lo difícil que será liberarse porque no saben cómo llego y ni siquiera saben porque está ahí, eso en parte me gusta como el tema sobrenatural es realizado en esta historia siendo por supuesto algo importante, pero también existe el tema de la familia, sin ninguna escena de terror o suspenso, este film tranquilamente puede ser un drama familiar por mostrar la soledad y depresión que pueden sentir personas que se sientan abandonadas y eso las hace vulnerables a cualquier cosa que pueda atentas con sus vidas, esto me gustó de esta película, existen temas que son visibles, que sirven de pretexto para ayudar al espectador a encontrar una respuesta de todo lo que sucede en esta historia.
Temas como la soledad, depresión, enfrentar las dificultades de tener mayor edad, son cosas que enfrentan todos los personajes de esta historia, de forma directa e indirecta y que sabiendo que tal vez estén teniendo lo último de sus vidas solo les queda encontrar algo divino, celestial para sentir esperanza y ayuda a enfrentar el miedo que sienten, esto es otra cosa que me ha gustado de este film, el hacer ver de qué todos en cualquier momento de nuestras vidas debemos buscar a Dios como una vía de salvación así nunca hubiéramos creído en él, pero hay algo que me gustó mucho más y es que con la aparición repentina de la fe en Dios que pasaría si en nuestras peticiones y rezos no llega un milagro sino todo lo contrario, que pasaría si en vez de ser beneficiados por un milagro, en realidad somos víctimas de oscuridad y maldad.
Bryan Bertino**_ who gained fame in the genre with a good film like "The Strangers" (2008), tells us in this opportunity a story unhealthy in every way, there are a number of hidden themes in this short and direct film about a curse and how difficult it will be to get free because they do not know how it came and do not even know why it is there, that partly I like how the supernatural theme is realized in this story being of course something important, but there is also the family theme, without any horror or suspense scene, this film can be a family drama for showing the loneliness and depression that people can feel when they feel abandoned and that makes them vulnerable to anything that can threaten their lives, I liked this film, there are themes that are visible, that serve as a pretext to help the viewer to find an answer to everything that happens in this story.
Themes like loneliness, depression, facing the difficulties of being older, are things that all the characters in this story face, directly and indirectly and knowing that maybe they are having the last of their lives they only have to find something divine, celestial to feel hope and help to face the fear they feel, this is another thing I liked about this film, I liked the fact that at any moment of our lives we should look for God as a way of salvation even if we had never believed in him, but there is something that I liked much more and it is that with the sudden appearance of faith in God what would happen if in our petitions and prayers a miracle does not come but on the contrary, what would happen if instead of being benefited by a miracle, in reality we are victims of darkness and evil.
Esta corta y lúgubre historia nos presenta a personajes que tienen obligación en vez de un compromiso, hay algo muy marcado en los dos protagonista de esta historia y creo que posiblemente sea por el género de estos dos protagonista, por ejemplo "Louise" interpretado por Marin Ireland muestra un lado más unido a sus padres teniendo la intuición de que hay algo mal en el hogar de sus padres, cosa contraria sucede con "Michael" interpretado por Michael Abbott Jr. quien no esconde que la visita a dónde viven sus padres es de forma obligatoria en vez de querer ayudar y saber que está sucediendo, no hay duda de que ambos personajes deberán lidiar con lo que están viviendo sus padres de forma diferente, uno dispuesto a buscar una respuesta a todo y así poder encontrar una solución, otro en dónde solo espera que todo acabe de forma rápida porque tiene otras responsabilidades, personajes diferentes, pero con la similitud de ser víctimas de cosas que no creen.
This short and grim story presents us with characters that have an obligation rather than a commitment, there is something very marked in the two protagonists of this story and I think it is possibly because of the gender of these two protagonists, for example "Louise" played by Marin Ireland shows a side more attached to his parents having the intuition that there is something wrong in the home of his parents, the opposite happens with "Michael" played by Michael Abbott Jr. who does not hide that the visit to where his parents live is mandatory instead of wanting to help and know what is happening, there is no doubt that both characters must deal with what their parents are experiencing differently, one willing to seek an answer to everything and thus find a solution, another where he just hopes that everything ends quickly because he has other responsibilities, different characters, but with the similarity of being victims of things they do not believe.
Por momentos he tenido la sensación de que por gran parte del tiempo no es la típica película de terror, a pesar de tener escenas "jump scare" y otras más vista en este tipo de films, pero su historia, más los tema usados y todo el ambiente oscuro, tétrico es lo que podemos percibir como el terror en historia, sé que habrá personas que no la considerar muy terrorífica y respeto esa opinión porque no es un film perfecto y creo que al no mostrar un origen de la maldición, un "¿Por qué sucede todo esto?" Seguramente es lo que menos gusta en esta historia y para ser sincero, justamente eso es lo que me ha fascinado, como dije antes siempre he visto películas con mensajes positivos sobre milagros que le ocurre a una persona o a una familia, la respuesta de que eso sucede es que fueron bendecidos por Dios, pues está historia, The Dark and the Wicked, sucede todo lo contrario, cosas malas le pasan a personas, cosas que los llevan a sentir la oscuridad y hasta ser parte de algo malo y los llevan a cometer hechos horribles, creo que está película por este tema encontré un gran parecido al film estrenado este año, The Night House, son temas iguales, la sensación de una oscuridad que acecha hasta que te rindes y eres parte de algo malo; siendo sincero tenía muchas expectativas sobre esta película, pensaba que sería algo más aterrador, aterrador clásico ya visto en otras películas y es por eso que me ha gustado, historia aterradora, corta, pero a la vez lenta hasta su último acto que muestran todo de una vez, un final llena de esperanza pero a la vez llena de mentira, creo que eso es algo aterrador por parte de este film el cual recomiendo para cerrar este mes del terror.
At times I have had the feeling that for much of the time is not the typical horror film, despite having scenes "jump scare" and others more seen in this type of films, but its story, plus the themes used and all the dark, gloomy atmosphere is what we can perceive as terror in history, I know there will be people who do not consider it very scary and I respect that opinion because it is not a perfect film and I think that by not showing an origin of the curse, a "Why does all this happen? "As I said before I have always seen movies with positive messages about miracles that happen to a person or a family, the answer is that they were blessed by God, well this story, The Dark and the Wicked, is the opposite, bad things happen to people, things that lead them to feel the darkness and even be part of something bad and lead them to commit horrible deeds, I think this movie for this theme I found a great resemblance to the film released this year, The Night House, they are the same themes, the feeling of a darkness that lurks until you give up and you are part of something bad; being honest I had many expectations about this film, I thought it would be something more scary, scary classic already seen in other films and that's why I liked it, scary story, short, but at the same time slow until the last act that show everything at once, an end full of hope but at the same time full of lies, I think that's something scary from this film which I recommend to close this month of terror.
