"Good Police Work" - "The Game is the Game"

En "The Wire" se relata (en parte) lo dura, deprimente y frustrante lucha que tienen personas que creen en la ley y que hacen lo posible e imposible para detener las potentes organizaciones criminales que ahogan en los vicios de la droga a las personas que residen zonas menos privilegiadas de la ciudad de Baltimore; primeramente está tema es lo que origina esta serie y se va desarrollando buscando el origen de este mal y de como es difícil encontrar un final. Esta serie creada por David Simon, es basada en los relatos o las vivencias de Ed Burns, co creador, productor y co-escritor de The Wire y quien fue policía y después maestro en una escuela pública en Baltimore, Maryland y tuvo que lidiar con la burocracia gubernamental que afectó su trabajo de policía como de maestro. La idea principal era mostrar una historia cruda y real de diferentes puntos de vista sobre cómo luchar contra el crimen y de como vivir en un lugar que pareciera estar olvidada por el mismo Dios y es por eso que tiene una gran variedad de personajes que van mostrando un gran número de situaciones sobre como se lucha contra el crimen, de como se es criminal, de como se es adicto y de como se es víctima.

"The Wire" tells (in part) the hard, depressing and frustrating struggle of people who believe in the law and who do everything possible and impossible to stop the powerful criminal organizations that drown in the vices of drugs to people who live in less privileged areas of the city of Baltimore; first this theme is what originates this series and develops looking for the origin of this evil and how it is difficult to find an end. This series created by David Simon, is based on the stories or experiences of Ed Burns, co-creator, producer and co-writer of The Wire and who was a policeman and then a teacher in a public school in Baltimore, Maryland and had to deal with government bureaucracy that affected his work as a policeman and teacher. The main idea was to show a raw and real story of different points of view about how to fight crime and how to live in a place that seems to be forgotten by God himself and that is why it has a great variety of characters that show a great number of situations about how to fight crime, how to be a criminal, how to be an addict and how to be a victim.

Tengo claro que esta serie en sus cinco temporadas crea un relato muy interesante y puedo decir hasta perfecta sobre la lucha entre el bien y el mal porque justamente en su primera temporada estrenada hace 20 años nos enseña como una unidad policial busca vías legales para atrapar a criminales y a pesar de no tener una justicia plena, está la sensación de hacer un buen trabajo policial aunque no es suficiente porque los criminales, cuando representan a una organización, son poderosos y más cuando conocen sus derechos (a pesar de ser delincuentes) y usan todo lo que tengan a favor para poder seguir delinquiendo; esto lo encontré maravilloso en esta serie que no busca en glorificar al criminal, sino enseñar este estilo de vida llena de sacrificio, peligro y viles decisiones; también muestra lo frustrante del trabajo policial porque a pesar de hacer todo dentro de la ley, el criminal no consigue el castigo y eso afecta a quien lucha por hacer un trabajo el cual cree que podrá hacer un cambio y en esto es donde mejora esta serie porque no se estanca en mostrar una solución al problema, sino que origina y prolonga el problema; si ser policía crea frustración, que me pueden decir del maestro que cree en la educación como cura total para que generaciones no se pierdan en la delincuencia; en esta parte de la historia tiene más peso la burocracia como gran enemigo y demuestra lo pequeño que puede ser una simple organización de distribuidores de narcóticos porque sin las malas decisiones de gobernantes no hubiera zonas pobres que caerían en las manos de criminales y no sé convertirán en delincuentes, sin ninguna duda son los que hacen dispar una lucha entre el bien y el mal generando que esa línea que separa ambos caminos se haga más delgada y los que juraron defender al inocente terminen usando nuevas vías (no legales) para buscar victorias que al final no serán satisfactorias y justamente esto es lo perfecto de The Wire, no es esa serie que todo se resuelve y todos contentos a sus casas a celebrar, es todo lo contrario, es como la vida en dónde se pierde, se empata y se gana y creo que eso hace que recibe admiración y respeto por fans (antiguos y nuevos) porque se creó una historia que nos enseña la grave realidad que enfrentan muchas personas por malas decisiones de gobernantes.

It is clear to me that this series in its five seasons creates a very interesting story and I can even say perfect about the struggle between good and evil because precisely in its first season premiered 20 years ago it shows us how a police unit seeks legal ways to catch criminals and despite not having a full justice, there is the feeling of doing a good police work although it is not enough because criminals, when they represent an organization, are powerful and more when they know their rights (despite being criminals) and use everything they have in favor to continue committing crimes; I found this wonderful in this series that does not seek to glorify the criminal, but to show this lifestyle full of sacrifice, danger and vile decisions; it also shows how frustrating police work is because despite doing everything within the law, the criminal does not get the punishment and that affects those who struggle to do a job which they believe can make a change and this is where this series improves because it does not stagnate in showing a solution to the problem, but it originates and prolongs the problem; if being a policeman creates frustration, what can I say about the teacher who believes in education as a total cure so that generations are not lost in delinquency; in this part of the story the bureaucracy has more weight as a great enemy and shows how small a simple organization of narcotics distributors can be because without the bad decisions of those in power there would be no poor areas that would fall into the hands of criminals and would not become delinquents, without any doubt they are the ones that make a fight between good and evil, generating that the line that separates both paths becomes thinner and those who swore to defend the innocent end up using new ways (not legal) to seek victories that in the end will not be satisfactory and this is exactly what is perfect about The Wire, it is not that series where everything is solved and everyone goes home happy to celebrate, it is the opposite, it is like life where you lose, draw and win and I think that makes it receive admiration and respect from fans (old and new) because it created a story that teaches us the serious reality that many people face because of bad decisions of rulers.

“If we lose the battle, we will lose the streets...”

El nuevo proyecto de David Simon para HBO es basado en un hecho real en dónde una unidad táctica de rastreo de armas, el cual estuvo envuelto en incidentes criminales por varios años antes de caer detenidos en el 2017; esta miniserie de tan solo seis episodios demuestra en parte lo grave de la situación gubernamental y policial en Baltimore y es otro caso más en dónde podemos ver que por usar un uniforme, placa y jurar proteger y hacer cumplir las leyes, no es suficiente para personas que solo piensan es enriquecerse a costa de inocentes y criminales. La decisión de relatar la historia mostrando diferentes líneas del tiempo en dónde pasamos de la detención ha como entraron a la policía y su tiempo en la unidad de rastreos de armas es una de las características más trascendentes de esta corta y cruda miniserie; el trayecto criminal de este grupo de policías es impresionante por cómo consiguieron manejar o manipular un sistema haciendo su trabajo porque haciendo arrestos es que obtuvieron ventaja por el uso de sus placas; siendo hombres que representan la ley es que obtuvieron poder y se sintieron intocables, pero a la vez crearon una grave falta de percepción de la realidad que al final los hizo caer y así ser atrapados.

David Simon's new project for HBO is based on a real event where a tactical weapons tracking unit, which was involved in criminal incidents for several years before being arrested in 2017; this miniseries of only six episodes shows in part the seriousness of the government and police situation in Baltimore and is another case where we can see that wearing a uniform, badge and swearing to protect and enforce the laws, is not enough for people who only think is to enrich themselves at the expense of innocents and criminals. The decision to tell the story by showing different timelines where we go from the arrest to how they entered the police force and their time in the weapons tracking unit is one of the most transcendent characteristics of this short and raw miniseries; the criminal journey of this group of cops is impressive for how they managed to manage or manipulate a system by doing their job because making arrests is how they gained advantage by the use of their badges; being men who represent the law is how they gained power and felt untouchable, but at the same time they created a serious lack of perception of reality that in the end made them fall and thus be caught.

No quiero que el párrafo anterior se considere un spoiler porque para entender lo que he escrito se debe ver cada uno de los episodios que conforman está miniserie y es que las actitudes y prácticas de cada uno de estos ex agentes policiales son lo peor y justamente en el opening de cada episodio son descritos de una manera perfecta; si por momentos puede sentir frustración por algunos sucesos que se ven en The Wire, no tengo duda que en We Own This City fue peor, por momentos no podía creer nada de lo que estaba viendo por cómo se manejan, por las revelaciones por cómo se apoyan, sé defienden, admiran y respetan porque se crean un nombre, falso nombre, al llamarse como lo mejor de una unidad policial cuando al final son una gran parte de un problema que debería ser solución en vez de causarlo. Quedé fascinado con esta historia y después de ver The Wire, puedo decir que está miniserie se siente como una continuación o complemento a lo que fue esa famosa serie, porque tanto en la tercera temporada y última se plantea algo y puede ser que tanto Simon como Burns no querían relevar cosas tan graves como las que se descubrieron con el arresto de esa unidad criminal y pienso que si estos productores y escritores hubieran tenido una oportunidad de escribir otra temporada más se enfocan en la corrupción que se vive dentro de una unidad policial porque tal vez era lo único que les faltó abarcar en esa serie, pero con esta oportunidad que les brindo este hecho noticioso se pudo demostrar como se hacen tan mal las cosas en la ciudad de Baltimore, es grave lo permisivo, el premio que se le da a un grupo de policías porque inflan una estadística y los convierten en intocables hasta que esa burbuja no aguanta más y explota revelando una nefasta verdad y es aquí donde a rodar de que ya en sí la historia es interesante, pienso que el trabajo hecho por directores y guionista al encontrar esta manera de relatar la historia de estos ex policías y ahora convictos es lo mejor porque encaja todo y sorprende con muchas situaciones lamentables que se van descubriendo. Al terminar de ver ambos proyectos de David Simon, pensaba que sería difícil volver a ver una serie policial, por lo menos una que trate de abarcar tantas cosas y que funcionen como lo hacen ambas historias y creo que eso es del porqué considero a ambos proyectos como excelentes, son historias fascinantes, reales, tristes en momentos, con muy buenos personajes, momentos cómicos (en The Wire), momentos despreciables (We Own This City) buena dirección y que no importa en cuál época se desarrolle, siempre existirá una crítica sobre un mal trabajo en cualquier fase del gobierno, de gente que fue electa para servir a un pueblo y lo que hacen es destruirlo poco a poco mientras ellos se benefician cada vez más.

I do not want the previous paragraph to be considered a spoiler because to understand what I have written you must see each of the episodes that make up this miniseries and the attitudes and practices of each of these former police officers are the worst and just in the opening of each episode are described in a perfect way; If at times you can feel frustration for some events seen in The Wire, I have no doubt that in We Own This City was worse, at times I could not believe anything I was seeing because of how they handle themselves, the revelations of how they support, defend, admire and respect each other because they create a name, false name, calling themselves as the best of a police unit when in the end they are a big part of a problem that should be a solution instead of causing it. I was fascinated with this story and after watching The Wire, I can say that this miniseries feels like a continuation or complement to what that famous series was, because both in the third and last season something is raised and it may be that both Simon and Burns did not want to relieve things as serious as those that were discovered with the arrest of that criminal unit and I think that if these producers and writers had had a chance to write another season more focus on the corruption that is lived within a police unit because maybe it was the only thing they lacked to cover in that series, but with this opportunity provided by this news event they were able to show how things are done so badly in the city of Baltimore, it is serious the permissiveness, the award given to a group of police officers because they inflate a statistic and make them untouchable until that bubble does not hold anymore and explodes revealing an unfortunate truth and it is here where the story itself is interesting, I think the work done by directors and screenwriter to find this way to tell the story of these ex-cops and now convicts is the best because it fits everything and surprises with many unfortunate situations that are discovered. When I finished watching both projects of David Simon, I thought it would be difficult to see a police series again, at least one that tries to cover so many things and work as both stories do and I think that's why I consider both projects as excellent, they are fascinating stories, real, sad at times, with very good characters, comic moments (in The Wire), despicable moments (We Own This City) good direction and that no matter what era it takes place in, there will always be a criticism about a bad job in any phase of government, of people who were elected to serve a people and what they do is to destroy it little by little while they benefit more and more.
