WATCHMEN

The HBO miniseries, WATCHMEN, leads the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, receiving 26 nominations, being the most nominated for that night.

Hi Hivers, last Tuesday was the announcement of the nominees for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, in these nominations we found different series that is normal to see in this list as others in which both critics, press and fans expected to be recognized for their great stories and excellent performances, One of those series is just "WATCHMEN", series created for HBO by Damon Lindelof, which has nine episodes and is taken as a direct sequel to the comic made by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons in 1986.

"WATCHMEN" is one of the best mini-series I've ever seen, even though there was a lot of tension or pressure about whether or not to do it after the criticized version made by Zack Snyder, that's why Lindelof, had the great opportunity to teach and tell a story that could fill part of what was seen in the comic many years ago and give a continuity showing a new story to the many fans who already found it perfect as it was made.

But in this post I won't write about how much I liked this series, more than anything I want to do is to show how wrong many critics are because of the Emmys nominations, yesterday I was just reading through the social networks how unfair Watchmen, has so many nominations and that has only happened to continue with the line of political correctness that we are living, but more than anything else with the whole racial issue that North America has been experiencing in recent months and this is for me very unfair because it not only minimizes the work done by producers, screenwriters, directors and actors in telling a story that despite being made into fiction, shows a reality that they are living and unfortunately will continue to live if there is not a change of mentality.

Many of the criticisms about these nominations were unfortunate to read, among these criticisms was that they were to silence the Black community that has always lived as victims, this was something very sad to read and I immediately thought that these people had not seen the series, I remember that when I saw the first episode that showed what happened in Tulsa in 1921 regarding the racial massacre on Black Wall Street, Within my ignorance of what happened I only thought that it was part of the fiction of the story to tell an origin of some character, but it was just at the end and reviewing the content of that episode called "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" that I was surprised when I discovered that everything had happened, that made me sad, I thought about how relieved I was not giving any opinion about what I had seen and I only thought that this series was more than just keep telling the stories of Doctor Manhattan and company.

The other thing I liked about this series was the image of the black community, in it we see people who are police officers living in good neighborhoods, it doesn't show that repetitive image of a community living in places with few resources, rejected and marginalized by society, of course justice is not as it should be because despite receiving a large sum of money for being descendants of the victims of the Tulsa massacre, there are also monuments that remember that horrible fact so that it won't happen again, but does this bring peace? No, as long as there is a benefited group, there will be another that will want that and more when they have had it, that is why the use of violence, whether it is under a mask or wearing a uniform, will always be the weapon to frighten and more when the "peaceful" plan to retain no longer works. If you watch several episodes you will see how one community is integrated and another rejected, rejected because they believe they are the only ones who should be benefited and do not accept integration or equality and therefore abhor any message or image that means the opposite of their beliefs, as is the case with some people who criticize this series.

In only nine episodes this series deals with many topics, the family lineage, racism, hate, lies, conspiracies and love, all excellently written and acted, a great vision of an already great story where using fiction they can tell realities in the world of politics and how we are as a society and in this series that is done correctly, gives a continuation and closure to such a good story and begins others based on the recovery of humanity of a being who is considered a God just by falling in love with a woman and sacrificing for her, That's why minimizing this series with a criticism that they give many nominations for the racial situation of a country is unfair, this should only show that both in 1986 to 2019-20, history has not changed much, that issues such as the misuse of power, racism, control and lies is something that is still everyday and many just want to take their eyes off the reality, I wish there were more stories like "WATCHMEN" that uses fiction, people with extraordinary powers or masks, to tell real stories that have always wanted to be hidden.
