I admire many performances by Keanu Reeves. I believe he is an actor that has forever held potential, just never really had the opportunity to shine. John Wick is definitely one of those opportunities, I just cannot enjoy it.
The action genre is one that I extensively enjoyed in my youth, but I must admit, these days I have a strong layer of pretentiousness that coats my ability to just shut off my brain and enjoy something that may just be fun. Perhaps one day I'll write about that in another post.
John Wick is a beautifully choreographed piece of cinema, there's no denying it; and even though that choreography is surrounded by headshots and the splattering of blood, we have Keanu Reeves to thank for it, for his extensive history in martial arts.
This is where I get a little arrogant of what I consider to be a good film: I cannot enjoy the narrative. I struggle to enjoy films that offer few answers to many questions simply to drag the film into many more instalments; I find it hard to sit back and enjoy mindless killing simply due to the creative ways in which they take place.
For once I find myself unable to enjoy a film that deserves the universal praise it receives, due to my personal preferences and subtle annoyances that have plagued me since my passion for the world of cinema took me into new depths of art and expression.
John Wick is definitely one of the best action films to have been released in quite a while, and I do recommend it if you enjoy the genre--just ignore my silly opinions--or films that will be quite fun to watch with another person that doesn't watch too many in the first place.
