Hello, cinephiles, I hope you are doing very well. I have said many times before that I am not a fan of Hindi cinema but one among so many producers, directors and actors, has stolen my interest and admiration - Aamir Khan who is all three in one. I have not been able to see all his work but the few that I have seen, are fantastic and loaded with positive messages that make the world less grey. On this occasion, I was able to appreciate the 2017 film Secret Superstar, although he doesn't have the lead role, he plays a pivotal role in the filming.

Hola, cinéfilos, espero se encuentren muy bien. Ya he dicho muchas veces que no soy fan del cine hindi pero uno de entre tantos productores, directores y actores, se ha robado mi interés y admiración: Aamir Khan que es los tres en uno. No he podido ver todo su trabajo pero los pocos que he visto, son fantásticos y cargados de mensajes positivos que hacen que el mundo sea menos gris. En esta ocasión, pude apreciar el film Secret Superstar del año 2017, aunque él no tenga el papel principal, cumple un rol fundamental en el rodaje.

A Frustrated Dream.

We get the story of Insia Malik, a young girl whose dream is to win a singing contest and become famous. Due to conflicts in her family, this is almost impossible for her so she gives up, for the moment, the idea of going to the contest.

Un Sueño Frustrado.

Nos conseguimos con la historia de Insia Malik, una joven cuyo sueño es llegar ganar un concurso de canto y ser famosa. Por conflictos en su familia, esto es casi imposible para ella por lo que desiste, por el momento, la idea de ir al concurso.

Ingenious idea.

Insia, along with her mother (Najma) and younger brother (Guddu), live a tortuous life of mistreatment by the head of the house (Farookh). He ignores his daughter, physically and verbally abuses his wife and manipulates his son every chance he gets, which is why Insia decides to find a way out of this torment with her mother and brother. The idea seems ridiculous but Najma tries her best to support her daughter.

Idea Ingeniosa.

Insia, junto a su madre (Najma) y su hermano menor (Guddu), viven una tortuosa vida de maltrato por la cabeza de la casa (Farookh). Este no toma en cuenta a su hija, abusa física y verbalmente de su esposa y manipula a su hijo cada vez que tiene la mínima oportunidad, razón por la que Insia decide ingeniársela para salir de ese tormento junto a su madre y hermano. La idea parece ridícula pero Najma pero trata en lo posible en apoyar su hija.

Secret Superstar gets out of control.

With such a crazy idea, Insia takes crazy measures. She creates a YouTube account to save money and escape, but she can't show her face because if her father finds out it would be the end of everyone. By covering her face, Insia, along with her guitar and her perfect voice, became famous in a way she never thought possible. She was on everyone's lips, in the newspapers, on tv, etc.

Secret Superstar se Descontrola.

Con una idea tan descabellada, Insia toma medidas descabelladas. Se crea una cuenta en YouTube para ahorrar dinero y escapar, pero no puede mostrar su rostro porque si su padre se entera sería en fin de todos. Al tapar su rostro, Insia junto su guitarra y su perfecta voz, toman una fama que ella jamás pensaría. Estaba en la boca de todos, en los periódicos, tv, etc.

It's not the end!

Farookh in one of his outbursts of rage, sends Insia to destroy his laptop along with the opportunity to flee that he had in mind. But Insia didn't count on the fact that she would have the support of a great friend (and crush), Chintan, a boy from school who helps her get a recording with a renowned producer. This is where Aamir Khan's pivotal role comes in. But this producer, Shakti Kumar, is a despot and self-centered character, he only listens to his own reasons and doesn't care about others. She gets a date and goes to great lengths to travel alone to Mumbai, only to meet this despot character who wants to get her to sing obscenities. After getting Shakti to come to her senses, Insia manages to sing her own songs and get him to help her with her mother's problem, now becoming a great support for her (the guy has a big heart, after all).

¡No es el fin!

Farookh en uno de sus arranques de ira, manda a Insia a destruir su laptop junto con la oportunidad de huir que tenía en mente. Pero Insia no contaba con que tendría el apoyo de un gran amigo (y enamorado), Chintan, un chico de la escuela que la ayuda a conseguir una grabación con un reconocido productor. Es aquí donde entra el papel fundamental de Aamir Khan. Pero este productor, Shakti Kumar, es un déspota y egocéntrico personaje, solo escucha sus razones y no le importan los demás. Consigue una cita y hace las mil y una para viajar sola a Mumbai, solo para conseguirse con este personaje déspota que la quiere poner a cantar obscenidades. Luego de hacer que Shakti entre en razón, Insia logra cantar sus propias canciones y que él la ayude con el problema de su madre, convirtiéndose ahora en un gran apoyo para ella (el tipo tiene un gran corazón, después de todo).

Songs of Freedom.

Even though Insia was no longer making a living on any of her accounts, the release of her album made her fame continue to grow, but the conflict with her father was growing. Farookh was no longer just mistreating his wife, he was already doing it with his children and now brings the surprise that they will leave the country; in addition, he learns a secret that his mother has kept to herself for years. Everything Insia had fought for and everything her mother had put up with, comes crashing down and Insia goes into depression, cancels everything to do with the album, nominations, etc. Najma, seeing the state of her daughter, takes courage and confronts her husband, gaining her freedom and that of her children.

Cantos de Libertad

A pesar de que Insia ya no hacía vida en ninguna de sus cuentas, el lanzamiento de su disco hizo que la fama siguiera creciendo, pero el conflicto con su padre crecía. Farookh ya no solo maltrataba a su esposa, sino que ya lo hacía con sus hijos y ahora trae la sorpresa de que se irán del país; además, se entera de un secreto que su madre se ha guardado durante años. Todo por lo que había luchado Insia y todo lo que había aguantado su madre, se viene abajo e Insia entre en depresión, cancela todo lo que tiene que ver con el disco, nominaciones, etc. Najma al ver el estado de su hija, se llena de valor y se enfrenta a su esposo, consiguiendo su libertad y la de sus hijos.

Beyond the good things that conclude in that ending, the plot shows us how raw and dark it is to be in an abused family. Insia's strong and decisive character often gets her into trouble for raising her voice in the face of injustice. And the strength that Najma has is impressive, everything she endures, every blow and tears she hides with her beautiful smile and acts of love towards her children is exceptional. We are also shown the characteristic innocent humor of this side of the earth, the unconditional friendship and the constant struggle of those who are repressed; it is undoubtedly a very good and peculiar film for lacking its typical dances (what I appreciate the most). The performances are impeccable, although with some aesthetic details that manage to go unnoticed, emotionally charged scenes, excellent music and powerful lyrics in a spectacular voice. So if you ask me, I answer as always: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't miss anything".

Más allá de las cosas buenas que concluyen en ese final, la trama nos muestra todo lo crudo y oscuro que es estar en una familia maltratada. El carácter fuerte y decisivo de Insia, la lleva muchas veces a problemas por alzar su voz ante las injusticias. Y la fuerza que tiene Najma es impresionante, todo lo que soporta, cada golpe y lágrimas que oculta con su hermosa sonrisa y actos de amor hacia sus hijos es excepcional. También nos muestran el característico humor inocente de este lado de la tierra, la amistad incondicional y la lucha constante de quienes están reprimidos; sin duda es una película muy buena y peculiar por carecer de sus típicos bailes (lo que más aprecio). Las actuaciones son impecables, aunque con alguno que otro detallito estético pero que logra pasar desapercibido, escenas cargadas de emociones, excelente música y letras potentes en una voz espectacular. Así que si me preguntan, les respondo como siempre: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
