Finally, a good exorcism movie! It's been years since I got good audiovisual material of this caliber, it's just that the last presentations I've come across are exaggeratedly bad, both in production and effects as well as in story development (maybe they would have put me and maybe I would have given better ideas). The one that was at the top of my list was The Exorcism of Emily Rose, I still watch it and it makes my skin crawl, but now this one is in contention for that spot. The Exorcism of God, released in March of this year, gave us many promises to impress us, and OBVIOUSLY it did, it was not just a well done trailer and that's it, everything is amazing and spectacular. Something that not many know is that Venezuelan cinema is good, it happens that (in my personal opinion) there are producers or writers who only focus on showing the daily life of the neighborhoods and the sorrows of the Venezuelan (between tastes and colors, there will always be low budget material and / or poor quality for those who want), making it seem that the Venezuelan talent is erected from their socio-cultural failures. This is not in all cases, mind you, I could name some films of this type that are brutally good, but that does not concern us at the moment. This particular gem is written and directed by Alejandro Hidalgo, who already in 2013 had surprised us with La Casa del Fin de los Tiempos, a masterful film that mixes suspense and horror. This caught my attention because, to be honest, I got carried away by public opinion without remembering this little detail (about who directed it), so when I decided to watch it, something alerted me as if wanting to make me remember it and bang, it came to my mind and there I knew right away that I would be in front of an excellent film.

¡Por fin, una película de exorcismo buena! Tenía años que no conseguía buen material audiovisual de este calibre, es que las últimas presentaciones con las que me he topado son exageradamente malas, tanto en producción y efectos como en desarrollo en la historia (capaz me hubiesen puesto a mí y quizás doy mejores ideas). La que se llevaba el primer lugar en mi lista era El Exorcismo de Emily Rose, aún la veo y se me eriza la piel, pero ahora ésta entra en disputa por ese puesto. El Exorcismo de Dios, estrenada en marzo de este año, nos daba muchas promesas de impresionarnos, y OBVIO que lo hizo, no quedó solo en un tráiler bien logrado y ya, todo es asombroso y espectacular. Algo que no muchos saben es que cine venezolano es bueno, pasa que (en mi opinión personal) hay productores o escritores que solo se enfrascan en mostrar la cotidianidad de los barrios y los pesares del venezolano (entre gustos y colores, siempre habrá material de bajo presupuesto y/o mala calidad para quien quiera), haciendo ver que el talento venezolano se erige desde sus fallos socioculturales. Esto no es en todos los casos, ojo, podría nombrar algunos films de este tipo que son brutalmente buenos, pero eso no nos atañe en estos momentos. Esta joya en especial es escrita y dirigida por Alejandro Hidalgo, que ya en el 2013 nos había sorprendido con La Casa del Fin de los Tiempos, una película magistral que mezcla suspenso y terror. Esto me llamó la atención porque, para ser sincera, me dejé llevar por la opinión pública sin recordar este pequeño detalle (sobre quién la dirigía), así que cuando decidí verla, algo me alertaba como queriéndome hacer recordarlo y ¡pum!, vino a mi mente y ahí supe enseguida que estaría frente a una excelente película.

We are in Mexico and Father Peter (why would most of them be called that?) is well liked and admired by the people because, apparently, he performs many miracles and helps everyone. This is complicated for him by having to face, you know, the devil, but the latter has a special plan.

Nos encontramos en México y el padre Peter (¿por qué la mayoría se llamarán así?) es muy querido y admirado por el pueblo porque, al parecer, realiza muchos milagros y ayuda a todos. Esto se le complica al tener que enfrentarse, ya saben, al demonio, pero este último tiene un plan especial.

Young Father Peter has to face an exorcism for the first time and alone, even though he is warned that to do so he must be clean of sin, otherwise the demon will find his weakness and fail. That is just what happens and he has to bear the burden of the new sin he has committed. As the years go by, he tries to redeem himself by taking care of the people and especially the children, but something mysterious happens to them, they always get sick for no apparent reason and end up dying.

El joven padre Peter tiene que enfrentarse por primera vez y solo a un exorcismo, a pesar de que le advierten de que para hacerlo debe estar limpio de pecado, sino el demonio encontrará su debilidad y fallará. Eso es justo lo que ocurre y tiene que cargar a cuestas con el nuevo pecado cometido. Al pasar los años, él intenta redimirse cuidando al pueblo y en especial a los niños, pero algo misterioso ocurre con ellos, siempre enferman sin razón aparente y terminan muriendo.

Peter knows that this cannot be a coincidence and tries uselessly to keep confessing his sins to God, but he does not know that the devil is still chasing him and will not rest until he finds him. So much so that the same demon is in charge of calling him, a new possession, but this one is special, it is a young woman who tries to remind him in every way, what Peter did and torments him so much. He knows he can't do another exorcism, he has too many sins that would weaken the whole ritual, even so he will try to do it one more time in order to save his children.

Peter sabe que eso no puede ser casualidad e intenta inútilmente seguirse confesando ante Dios sus pecados, pero no sabe que el demonio aún lo persigue y no descansará hasta encontrarlo. Tanto es así que el mismo demonio se encarga de llamarlo, una nueva posesión, pero está es especial, se trata de una joven que intenta hacerle recordar de todas las formas, lo que Peter hizo y le atormenta tanto. Sabe que no puede hacer otro exorcismo, tiene demasiados pecados que debilitarían todo el ritual, aun así intentará hacerlo una vez más con tal de salvar a sus niños.

I'm sorry, but I had to put this fragment of one of the dialogues in, it's so Venezuelan and I love it, I couldn't help pausing the movie so I could laugh like crazy. Maybe in English it's not very understandable, but hearing or saying aem>"maldita puta" is so typical and regionalist to me that I couldn't pass it up. Back on topic, at this point, we learn that the little father has a "fruit of sin" (a daughter, in case you don't understand), and who is the fruit? Exactly! That young girl who called him because she is possessed, the daughter of the one he had exorcised a few years ago.

Lo siento, pero tenía que meter este fragmento de uno de los diálogos, es tan venezolana y me encanta, no pude evitar pausar la película para poder reírme como loca. Quizás en inglés no se entienda mucho, pero escuchar o decir "maldita puta” me resulta tan típico y regionalista que no pude dejarlo pasar por alto. Volviendo al tema, en este punto, nos enteramos que el padrecito tiene un “fruto del pecado” (una hija, por si no se entiende), ¿Y quién es la frutica? ¡Exacto! Aquella joven que lo llamó porque está poseída, hija de quien había exorcizado hace ya unos años.

Yes, I know it sounds like a lot of soap opera, but it's not what it seems. It ends up becoming a mind game between Balban and Peter, where the demon is always supposed to win the pacts he makes, but the priest manages to turn it around. Although, the truth is, I don't know what the demon really wanted; that is, so much obsession for Peter (in several opportunities they mention that Balban never does things without thinking about it, he always has a goal), leaving an open ending and almost inviting to a second part where, probably, it will be known what this prince of darkness will do.

Sí, sé que suena a mucho novelón, pero no es lo que parece. Se termina convirtiendo en un juego mental entre Balban y Peter, donde se supone que siempre el demonio gana los pactos que é hace, pero el sacerdote logra darle la vuelta. Aunque, la verdad, no sé qué quería realmente el demonio; es decir, tanta obsesión por Peter (en varias oportunidades mencionan que Balban nunca hace las cosas sin pensarlo, siempre tiene un objetivo), dejando un final abierto y casi invitando a una segunda parte donde, probablemente, se sepa qué es lo que hará este príncipe de las tinieblas.

Visually it is very attractive, it is not like the typical horror movies where we can't see anything in the night shots or without light; the effects are very well done, there were many moments in which my skin did not stop bristling; the performances were impeccable, in short... for me, there was nothing wrong. In addition, it also has some nods to the iconic 70's movie, The Exorcist. Even though I kept making jokes about occult references (spiritualism and witchcraft) at some points, there were others where I had to hold on to the puff (as if I was that strong). So it can be said that my soul finally found peace when I saw a new exorcism movie so good and that, by the way, it was made by a Venezuelan. Of course it's a huge YES, or as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".

Visualmente es muy atractiva, no es como las típicas películas de terror en donde no podemos ver nada en las tomas nocturnas o sin luz; los efectos muy bien logrados, hubieron muchísimos momentos en que mi piel no dejaba de erizarse; las actuaciones impecables, en fin… para mí, no hubo nada malo. Además, también tiene algunos guiños a la icónica película de los 70, El Exorcista. A pesar de que yo no dejaba de hacer chistes de referencias al ocultismo (espiritismo y brujería) en algunos ratos, habían otros en los que tenía que aferrarme al puff (como si fuera tan fuerte). Así que se puede decir, que mi alma por fin encontró paz al ver una nueva película de exorcismo tan buena y que, de paso, sea hecha por un venezolano. Por supuesto es un grandísimo SÍ, o como siempre les digo: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
