Hello, film lovers. A few days ago I watched this film but I hadn't managed to give it the review it deserves. It is The Danish Girl (2015), a drama directed by Tom Hooper, and starring Eddie Redmayne. Although the actor is excellent in the roles I've seen him develop, I got a confession from him where he mentions that he didn't like playing this character at all, that it was very uncomfortable; but with all that, his performance was brutal in my opinion. This movie had a 6.2/10 and 84% of acceptance by the viewers according to source, although to be honest, I would give it a 9/10.

Einer and Gerda are a married couple of painters, although Gerda is not as well known as her husband. They enjoy a confidence and passion like no other, but in the development of Gerda's work, things are suddenly changing... or perhaps it was already there but hadn't been noticed? Maybe what started as a game, became the door that released what you were trying so hard to hide.

I don't know how you can paint the same thing over and over again.

Little by little we can see how Einar's obsessions of the past are becoming more and more evident. Although he does not tell them openly, he treasures them very deeply and this is reflected in his works: the same swamp with the fjords in the background. They take him back to a time when he was happy and unhappy at the same time, a time he could never get over.

... It was like kissing myself.

The passion and intimacy enjoyed by Gerda and Einar was fantastic, up to a certain point when some of Einar's comments begin to disturb Gerda, but when she asks and hears her husband's hesitant answer, she understands everything in silence and forgets what happened. It is as if deep down, she knew what he was hiding. Even when everyone was suspicious, she made the decision to protect her husband at all costs.

I think it would be better if Lili did not return

What starts as a simple game, is the trigger for Lili to make an appearance and stay more and more until there is nothing left of Einar. Seeing this transformation and the frustration but at the same time Greda's devotion to her husband is so strong that it hurts to watch. Seeing those feelings in Greda's eyes, makes you feel that false hope that someday her husband will return and that everything will be just a game that went away and everything is back to normal. This point is key for both of them, as they learn to grow together to understand that each one will have a life in her own way, even if it is so hard for Greda. She doesn't stop loving her husband but she doesn't want to hurt Lili either because they have become great friends. We are going to find ups and downs for both of them until they finally understand that they both need each other and must support each other. Besides that, you notice Lili's sincere admiration for Gerda and those long deep conversations about their lives become more meaningful when Lili expresses them and you notice the pain in Gerda's eyes, and seeing just the moment when she understands that Einar is not coming back is heartbreaking.

This is not my body, professor. Please take it away from me.

The moment when Lili decides to start the transition at any cost was the strongest thing I have seen in a long time. The helplessness of watching the whole scene is ridiculously emotionally jarring. On one hand you find yourself happy for her because she will finally fulfill her dream and on the other you just want to pierce the screen, hug her and help her heal even knowing what will happen. I guess all of that was felt 10 times more by Gerda.

It's completely me.

Already here my blanket didn't have a dry spot, tears were coming out all over the place. Each dialogue was a slap in the face that led us to the inevitable, it was very painful, I still had some hope, but I am comforted by the image of Lili being happy in those last moments as a complete and beautiful woman, as she always was and as she always dreamed.

Soy completamente yo.

This film comes at a time when gender issues are more open but it is also the time when there are more prejudices even though there is more information about it, it is still a stupidly taboo subject. Although the story takes place many years ago (I think in 1920, I don't remember), the subject of sick men who thought they were women was already being talked about and of course they were considered crazy and if they were married, worse, the wife would also be punished. Thank the universe that this case was exceptional and had the necessary support despite the fact that the others lived in prejudice. We would have to think about whether we would think and act the same or differently today. You can think about that while you delight yourself with this film, so as I always tell you: if you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't miss anything. See you in a future post.

The Danish Girl is a heavy and sometimes hard to watch movie but also beautiful in its execution and how it can affect the viewer's emotions.

I agree with your rating, it's easily a 9/10. Everything here is masterfully done, from visual and sound to the acting and writing.

It has been a long time since I watched this one but it made me a fan of Eddie. (I also cried rivers XD) he can convey the dysphoria and depression of being locked in the wrong body so well that even cis people are able to relate

And thank you for using the right pronouns in your review when talking about the characters! It's a small detail thar make a lot of difference
