We just started remodeling and we needed to get rid of many things, among them many DVD boxes with an extensive list of film titles, many good, others not so good, but I was able to find and remember some that I loved. Room, had been one of those very good movies, obviously I had seen it several times, but I didn't remember it at all, its subtitles were not well translated and in many parts it didn't even have any, so I only based on the fact that it was good for what I saw and the little I understood between its dialogues. I couldn't stay with the doubt, so I looked it up to see it again, and again I could see that it was really a very good story. It was directed by Lenny Abrahamson and based on a book written by Emma Donoghue, which bears the same name.

Recién empezamos a remodelar y necesitábamos botar muchas cosas, entre ellas muchas cajas de DVD con una extensa lista de títulos de films, muchos buenos, otros no tanto, pero pude encontrar y recordar algunos que me encantaron. Room (o La Habitación, por su traducción al latino), había sido una de esas películas muy buenas, obvio la había visto varias veces, pero no la recordaba del todo, sus subtítulos no estaban bien traducidos y en muchas partes incluso ni tenía, así que solo me basaba en que era buena por lo que veía y lo poco que entendía entre sus diálogos. No podía quedarme con la duda, así que la busqué para verla de nuevo, y nuevamente pude constatar que era realmente una historia muy buena. Fue dirigida por Lenny Abrahamson y basada en un libro escrito por Emma Donoghue, que lleva el mismo nombre.

We are faced with a drama with a touch of suspense, between a kidnapped mother and her son born in that confinement, the result of that kidnapping in which they lived for about 7 years and managed to escape.

Nos encontramos de frente a un drama con un toque de suspenso, entre una madre secuestrada y su hijo nacido en ese encierro, fruto de aquel secuestro en el que vivían unos 7 años y logran escapar.

The story is narrated by little Jack, 5 years old. He tells us what his world is like in the room. For him it is everything because it is the only thing he knows, there is nothing real but the two of them, nor is there anything beyond what he can imagine within those 4 walls. Jack and Ma, go about their day to day life in that cramped place, while waiting for the day to come with the magic deliveries (things they need to survive) from Old Nick.

La historia es narrada por el pequeño Jack de 5 años. Nos cuenta cómo es su mundo en la habitación. Para él lo es todo porque es lo único que conoce, no existe nada real más que ellos dos, ni hay más allá de lo que puede imaginar entre esas 4 paredes. Jack y Ma, pasan su día a día en ese estrecho lugar, mientras esperan que llegue el día con las entregas mágicas (cosas que necesitan para sobrevivir) del Viejo Nick.

As much as Ma tries to make her son's life the best it can be, they can't escape the reality they find themselves in. Things don't happen like they do on TV, there are no gorgeous birthday cakes, no presents, no pets, and on the day Old Nick comes, Jack knows he won't be able to get out of the tiny closet until his kidnapper is gone.

Por más que Ma intente hacer que la vida de su hijo sea lo mejor que pueda, no pueden escapar de la realidad en la que se encuentran. Las cosas no pasan como en la televisión, no hay tortas de cumpleaños bellísimas, no hay regalos, ni mascotas, y el día que viene el Viejo Nick, Jack sabe que no podrá salir del diminuto armario hasta que su secuestrador se haya marchado.

The beginning of the film, is the day Jack's fifth birthday arrives, and so does Ma's idea to finally escape from that hell. They don't have it easy, the place is locked under a code that only the kidnapper knows. To get out of there, she needs Jack's help, she tries to convince him that there is a world outside those walls, that what he sees on TV is real, that plants exist, but all this information is absurd for the little boy, he does not believe anything of what his mother is telling him and completely understandable. Jack begins to understand a little of what his mother tells him and she sees the opportunity to create a plan to get them out of there. On the first attempt, she fails, but that would be another chance for at least her son to get out of the room. This time there would be no margin for error and Jack would have to do all the work, a big responsibility to save himself and his mother.

El inicio del film, es el día en que llega el quinto cumpleaños de Jack, y también le llegan idea a Ma para escapar por fin de ese infierno. No la tienen fácil, el sitio está cerrado bajo un código que solo lo sabe el secuestrador. Para logar salir de ahí, necesita la ayuda de Jack, trata de convencerlo de que hay un mundo fuera de esas paredes, que lo que ve en la televisión es real, que las plantas existen, pero toda esa información es absurda para el pequeño niño, no cree nada de lo que su madre le está diciendo y completamente entendible. Jack comienza a entender un poco de aquello que le cuenta su mamá y ella ve la oportunidad para poder crear un plan que los saque de ahí. En el primer intento, falla, pero esa sería otra oportunidad para que al menos su hijo salga del cuarto. Esta vez no habría margen de error y Jack tendría que hacer todo el trabajo, una gran responsabilidad de salvarse a él mismo y a su madre.

His mother tells Jack that once he gets out into the world, to find anyone and ask for help, to scream, to run, to do everything to get help. But the world is so big for him and he is so small that just seeing the sky is overwhelming. As best he can, he manages to escape and starts running for help, his captor escapes, but there is still a chance he can save his mother. With great difficulty, the police manage to obtain information about where he is. This whole moment is very distressing, because we don't know if they will really find the mother or if they will find her dead, so when it is shown that the mother and son are together again, free, it is a total relief and we can breathe easier.

Su madre le dice a Jack que una vez que salga al mundo, busque a quien sea y pida ayuda, grite, corra, que haga todo para conseguir ayuda. Pero el mundo le resulta tan grande y él es tan pequeño, que tan solo ver el cielo, le resulta abrumador. Como puede, logra escapar y comienza a correr a pedir ayuda, su captor escapa, pero aún hay chance de que logre salvar a su mamá. Con gran dificultad, la policía logra obtener información sobre el sitio dónde se encuentra. Todo este momento resulta muy angustioso, porque no sabemos si de verdad encontraran a la madre o la hallaran muerta, así que cuando se muestra que la madre e hijo están juntos de nuevo, libres, es un total alivio y se puede respirar con más calma.

In one part narrated by Jack it is so shocking that it gives a sense of tenderness mixed with sadness. What would be completely normal for a child his age, for him was totally unfamiliar, terrifying. It reminded me very much of an occasion when I heard that our eyes cannot see what we do not know, and if we do, we will see it with immense terror. All these sudden new changes for Jack, were very strong, but he still tries to accept them little by little to be strong for his mom. Ma, for her part, as soon as she got out, felt alive again, but mentally she was declining, the post-traumatic stress generated by all that, the harassing media that did not cooperate, learning that her parents are no longer together and that her dad hates her for having a child with her kidnapper, lead her to a suicide attempt.

En una parte narrada por Jack es tan impactante que da una sensación de ternura mezclado con tristeza. Lo que sería completamente normal para un niño de su edad, para él era totalmente desconocido, aterrador. Me hizo recordar mucho a una ocasión en la que escuché que nuestros ojos no pueden ver lo que no conocemos, y de hacerlo, lo veremos con un terror inmenso. Todos esos nuevos cambios repentinos para Jack, eran muy fuertes, pero aún así intento aceptarlos poco a poco para ser fuerte por su mamá. Ma por su parte, apenas salió, se sentía viva nuevamente, pero mentalmente fue decayendo, el estrés postraumático generado por todo eso, la prensa acosadora que no cooperaba, enterarse que sus padres ya no están juntos y que su papá la aborrece por tener un hijo con su secuestrador, la llevan a un intento de suicidio.

Watching this movie again and with the proper translation, made me understand it better and appreciate the good job in developing and embracing this story. It makes you rethink about what it will feel like to go through a similar situation, because before I blindly judged Jack's mother for acting so stupid while the most affected was her son; now I could understand that I was totally wrong and that all the actions of both are totally logical and rather they lacked a little more empathy from the family, but it was also understandable because they were also affected by everything that happened. So it's all family drama. The learning that Jack gives his mother a lot of times, it leaves us unhinged, even though he is a barely 5 year old boy, who had no other interaction while he was locked up, he sees and understands such real and strong things. So if you ask me, I will answer as I always do: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have seen it, see it again, you can't miss anything."

Ver de nuevo esta película y con la traducción adecuada, me hizo entenderla mejor y a apreciar el buen trabajo a la hora de desarrollar y abarracar esta historia. Te hace recapacitar sobre qué se sentirá pasar por una situación parecida, porque antes juzgaba ciegamente a la madre de Jack por actuar tan estúpida mientras el más afectado era su hijo; ahora pude entender que estaba totalmente errada y que todas las acciones de ambos son totalmente lógicas y más bien les faltó un poco más de empatía de la familia, pero también era entendible porque ellos también resultaron afectados por todo lo que pasó. Así que todo es un drama familiar. El aprendizaje que Jack le da a su madre muchas veces, nos deja desencajados, a pesar de que es un niño de apenas 5 años, que no tuvo ninguna otra interacción mientras estaba encerrado, ve y entiende cosas tan reales y fuertes. Así que si me preguntan, les responderé como siempre: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
