Plot
The movie begins with a narrator who tells us that he will serve as our host and tell us a great story. He introduces himself as Marty Bronson, a dreamer and kind-hearted owner of a small hotel called Sunny Vista, where he also lives with his two children: Wendy and Skeeter. While Wendy is the typical unhappy and discouraged girl in the family, Skeeter is the restless, adventurous, and happy boy. He also shows us what a great father he is—not only does he do a great job raising them, but he also tells them stories every night before bed. However, what he has in spades as a father, he lacks as a hotel manager.

We’ve gone from talking about one of the most watchable movies of the 2000s to now talking about Adam Sandler’s most “family-friendly” movie—both of which, by the way, were released in the same year. It’s interesting to see how Sandler and his production company decided to team up with Disney to bring this movie to the screen. And this is very evident, not only in the way it was produced but also in its style of humor and tone. Obviously, you shouldn’t expect much from a fantasy comedy made by the giant Mouse House—especially when the lead is Adam Sandler.
The movie begins in a way that aims to hook the audience by introducing the famous concept of “fairy tales” and promises us that what we’re about to see is just another tale with all the fantastical, adventurous elements—and plenty of drama and romance—that one would normally expect. While this is true, I admit that the plot itself follows many tropes typical of any Disney story, even. Not to mention that, aside from Adam Sandler, the performances and characters we encounter here serve only to make us laugh—and that’s it.

La película empieza de una forma que busca enganchar al público introduciéndonos el famoso concepto de “los cuentos de hadas” y nos promete que lo que vamos a ver es un cuento más con todos los elementos fantásticos, aventurescos y repletos de drama y romance que uno normalmente esperaría. Si bien esto es así, admito que la trama como tal de esta historia posee muchos tropos típicos de toda historia hecha por Disney, incluso. Eso sin mencionar que, aparte de Adam Sandler, las actuaciones y personajes que conocemos aquí solo sirven para hacernos reír y ya.

In short, it’s just another Adam Sandler movie, but with the censorship and all the fantasy that Disney can pack into it—that’s all there is to it. I don’t know if people will like this movie or not, but personally, I have to admit that I was really entertained every time I watched it back when I was a kid. The plot is easy to follow, it features humor for the whole family, and it has a wide variety of elements that will thrill anyone. At the beginning, we meet the Bronson family, who—as you read above—grew up in a small family-run hotel called Sunny Vista.
However, due to the financial problems Mr. Marty faced, he decides to sell the place to a billionaire and hotel chain owner named Barry Nottingham. Barry promises Marty that, when he grows up, he’ll hand over the position of hotel manager to his beloved son, Skeeter. Years and decades pass, and the Sunny Vista becomes a fairly large and famous luxury hotel, but our beloved Skeeter continues to work in maintenance, instead of being the owner of the place his father founded. After this introduction, we meet the Bronson family as adults.

La trama es fácil de seguir, tiene un humor para toda la familia y muchos elementos variados que emocionará a cualquiera. Al principio conocemos a la familia Bronson, los cuales como leyeron arriba crecieron en un pequeño hotel familiar llamado Sunny Vista.
Sin embargo, debido a los problemas financieros que tuvo el señor Marty, decide vender el lugar a un multimillonario y dueño de una línea de hoteles llamado Barry Nottingham. Barry le promete a Marty que, cuando sea grande, él le dejaría el cargo de director del hotel a su querido hijo Skeeter. We also get to know Wendy’s two young children particularly well; she leaves them in Skeeter’s care for a week while she goes on a trip. The humor—or central focus—of this entire movie lies in the stories, especially the bedtime stories that Mr. Marty used to tell his children and that Skeeter, now an adult, decides to tell his nieces and nephews. I like that the movie revolves around these stories and even uses them as a pretext to give us tales and moments filled with fantasy, adventure, action, and science fiction.
We can also notice certain elements in the stories Skeeter tells us, all of which are somehow connected to his current life—his job at the hotel and everything else. At first, we realize that his outlook on life is bleak or negative because he’s always been treated like trash—and was even forgotten when the hotel’s new manager was announced. However, the time he spends with his nephews that week will completely change the way he sees the world, especially when he notices that some of the stories actually do come true.
También conocemos especialmente a los dos hijos pequeños de Wendy, quien les deja a cargo a Skeeter por una semana mientras se va de viaje. El chiste o punto de enfoque de toda esta película son los cuentos, especialmente los cuentos para dormir que en su momento les contaba el señor Marty a sus hijos y que ahora Skeeter, después de grande, decide hacer para con sus sobrinos. Me gusta que la película gire en torno a estos cuentos y que incluso lo utilicen como pretexto para darnos historias y momentos repletos de fantasía, aventura, acción y ciencia ficción.
Podemos también notar ciertas cosas en dichos cuentos que nos echa Skeeter, los cuales todos tienen alguna relación con la vida actual que él tiene con su trabajo en el hotel y todo eso. Al principio podemos darnos cuenta de que la visión que él tiene de la vida es oscura o negativa debido a que ha sido tratado siempre como basura y que incluso lo hayan olvidado al momento de anunciar al nuevo director del hotel. The film is also clear about the lessons it’s trying to convey. They’re so obvious that it’s impossible to ignore them—as is the case with materialism, for example, which we see in the second story Skeeter tells her nephews. We can also learn that, just as certain stories can come true, there are times when reality is never what one would wish for or expect it to be. So we not only see our funny protagonist have a week full of surprises and good things thanks to his stories, but also the exact opposite.
He has his good moments, but nothing turns out the way Skeeter expects, nor does he resolve any issues in his professional or personal life because he thinks only of himself. But despite all this, we also see that he does the right thing by showing how much he cares about looking after his family and keeping them together, even if that means giving up his dreams. The lesson the movie leaves us with at the end is the best one, no matter what people say about it. Life may be very cruel and difficult, but only you can turn it into an adventure full of fantastic moments if you decide to live it with the people who truly matter to you.
La película también es clara con respecto a las lecciones que nos intenta transmitir con ella. Es tan evidente que es imposible ignorarlas, como por ejemplo lo es el caso del materialismo, lo cual lo podemos notar con el segundo cuento que les echa Skeeter a sus sobrinos. También podemos aprender que, así como ciertos cuentos pueden hacerse realidad, hay ocasiones en las que la realidad nunca es como uno desearía o esperaría que fuera. Así que no solo vemos a nuestro gracioso protagonista tener una semana repleta de sorpresas y cosas buenas gracias a sus cuentos, sino todo lo contrario también.
Tiene sus momentos buenos, pero nada termina como Skeeter espera ni resuelve nada de su vida laboral o personal debido a que solo piensa en él mismo. Pero a pesar de todo esto, también notamos que hace bien en demostrar lo mucho que les importa cuidar y mantener unida a su familia, aunque eso signifique abandonar sus sueños. La lección que nos deja la película al final es la mejor, sin importar lo que diga la gente acerca de la misma. La vida puede que sea muy cruel y difícil, pero solo tú puedes convertirla en una aventura repleta de momentos fantásticos si decides vivirla con la gente que de verdad te importa.

"Bedtime Stories" is a clear reminder of the things we usually ignore or forget as time goes by. I'm talking about those happy moments you share with your family and loved ones. Yes, this movie is very emotional, but I’ll admit that I really enjoyed watching it from start to finish. Along with all the stories it tells and the funny and touching moments it features, it also makes it a great choice for a family movie night. This, combined with the perfect blend of fantasy elements, gives it that Disney touch that so many people love.
Mind you, I’m not saying I’m a fan of Disney movies per se—at least not beyond what I watched as a kid back in the day, and that’s it. But let’s just say that the movie’s plot and the bedtime story theme work very well to incorporate those fantastical elements without them feeling forced at all. As for the performances, I don’t really have much to complain about, to be honest, since I’ll admit that the entire cast of this movie did a great job. Obviously, within the scope of what you’d expect from a Disney comedy-fantasy film.
Bedtime Stories es un claro mensaje a aquello que uno normalmente ignora o olvida con el paso del tiempo. Estoy hablando de esos momentos felices que tienes con tu familia, con tus seres queridos. Si, muy emotivo y todo es esta película, pero admito que me gustó mucho verla de principio a fin y junto con todas las historias que nos cuenta y los momentos graciosos y emocionantes que posee también la convierte en una cinta preferida para verla con la familia. Esto, sumado a la mezcla perfecta de elementos fantásticos que tiene la misma le da ese toque Disney que a mucha gente le gusta ver.
Ojo, no digo que sea fan de las películas de Disney como tal, al menos no más allá de lo que llegué a ver cuando niño en su momento y ya. Pero digamos que la misma trama que tiene la película y el tema de los cuentos para dormir sirven muy bien para meter dichos elementos fantásticos sin que se vean forzados en lo absoluto. En cuanto a las actuaciones, no tengo mucho de qué quejarme la verdad ya que admito que el elenco entero de esta película lo han hecho muy bien. Obviamente, entre todo lo que uno espera ver de una película de comedia y fantasía de Disney.

Adam Sandler, as always, manages to stand out above everyone else thanks to his unique and very distinctive acting style. He has his usual funny lines, his impressions, and his hilarious moments where anything can happen. But beyond fulfilling his role as the lead, he does exactly what you’d expect—and that’s it. Other than that, I don’t think there’s anything to criticize about any of the actors here. Of course, the film’s childish, family-friendly humor might even seem a bit odd coming from Sandler himself, though it’s not all that bad.
Finally, what I think really stands out most about this movie is its audiovisual presentation. Especially the frequent use of CGI—though, I repeat, it’s nothing to write home about, especially for a comedy. The cinematography and the handling of the camera work and shots in this film aren’t too bad. The varied color palette and the excellent use of light and shadow also stand out a bit, though nothing compares to its visual effects—both practical and computer-generated. Honestly, seeing an animal with bulging eyes is one of the least surreal things in this movie.
Adam Sandler, como siempre, logra destacarse por sobre todos gracias a su particular y muy característico trabajo actoral. Tiene sus diálogos chistosos de siempre, sus imitaciones y sus momentos graciosos donde cualquier cosa puede pasar. Pero más allá de cumplir con su papel de protagonista, no hace más que todo lo que uno espera y ya. De resto, no creo que haya algo que criticar a algún actor aquí. Claro, el tema del humor infantil y para toda la familia que tiene la película es algo que puede incluso parecernos extraño al ser el mismo Sandler quien los hace, aunque tampoco están tan mal.
Por último y lo que considero que es lo que más llegó a llamar la atención de esta película es su apartado audiovisual. Especialmente el uso frecuente del CGI, pero nada del otro mundo y menos para una película de comedia, repito. La fotografía y el manejo de cámaras y planos que tiene esta cinta no están tan mal. La paleta variada de colores y el uso excelente de luces y sombras también destacan un poco, aunque nada se le compara con sus efectos visuales tanto prácticos como los hechos por computadora. De verdad, ver a un animal con los ojos saltones es algo de lo menos surrealista que tiene esta película.

The sound effects aren’t bad either, but what really stands out here is the soundtrack. All in all, this is one of the few Adam Sandler movies I can recommend watching with the whole family.

Seguramente muchos dirán que se ve un poco mal el CGI en esta película, pero teniendo en cuenta la fecha en la que se produjo es de esperarse e incluso llama la atención que se vea bien. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero lo que más se destaca aquí también es la banda sonora. En fin, esta es de las pocas películas de Adam Sandler que puedo recomendarla ver con toda la familia.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y fantasía.
