Hello, cinema fans. Today I’m here to share a comedy film that, in one way or another, left a mark on my childhood and adolescence. It’s one of the first movies I remember seeing starring one of the most famous actors in the comedy genre—and honestly, it’s also one of my favorites. Based on a screenplay he co-wrote with the aforementioned lead actor, Billy Madison was directed by Tamra Davis. The film stars the famous Adam Sandler alongside Bradley Whitford, Bridgette Wilson, Darren McGavin, and others.

Plot
The movie opens by introducing us to an immature, drunk, and chaotic 27-year-old named Billy Madison—who has the mind of an elementary school child—living a life of luxury as the son of a famous, billionaire hotel owner. Ever since he left high school, he’s been partying, drinking, and hanging out with his friends, getting into mischief and wasting his time. One day, while making a fool of himself in front of his father’s business partners at home, he is sent to his father’s office to hear the news that his father will be handing over his hotel company to his vice president, Eric Gordon. Billy, disagreeing with this decision, tells his father about an idea that has just occurred to him.

After several weeks in a row reviewing nothing but iconic films by great directors and masterpieces that changed the world of cinema, I feel like now is the perfect time to take a little break and have a laugh with a comedy special. This time, I plan to focus on the Adam Sandler movies I know and have watched since I was a kid—he’s one of my favorite comedy actors. As I always do with these specials, I’ve made a list of all the actor’s well-known films, ordered by release date, and we’ll start, of course, with the first one.
So that’s why today we’ll be talking about the first Adam Sandler movie I remember seeing—which is also the first one in which he starred (and was part of the writing team). I don’t consider it one of the best comedy movies Sandler has starred in, but it’s one of the earliest and most well-known films that launched the actor to fame in the years that followed. I wish I could talk to you today about a better movie—in my opinion—since I wanted to enter the contest @wiseagent is hosting in this community (which you can see here), but oh well.
Luego de varias semanas seguidas reseñando puras películas icónicas de directores grandiosos y obras maestras que cambiaron el mundo del cine, siento que ahora es un momento perfecto para desconectar un poco el cerebro y reírnos un poco con un especial de comedia. En esta ocasión, pienso centrarme en las películas que conozco y que he visto desde pequeño de Adam Sandler, uno de mis actores de comedia favoritos. Como siempre hago con estos especiales, hago una lista de todas las películas conocidas del actor ordenadas por fechas y empezamos, obviamente, por el primero.
Así que por eso estaremos hablando hoy de la primera película que recuerdo haber visto de Adam Sandler y que a su vez es la primera en la que trabaja como protagonista (y parte del equipo de escritores del guión). No la considero una de las mejores películas de comedia que Sandler haya protagonizado, pero es de las primeras y más reconocidas que ha llevado al actor a la fama en años posteriores. Me gustaría poder hablarles hoy de una mejor película, para mí, ya que quería participar en el concurso que hay en esta comunidad que está haciendo @wiseagent (que puedes ver aquí), pero bueno.

But anyway, my perfectionist approach to doing things holds me back from success. Getting back to Billy Madison, I admit it was part of my childhood and pre-teen years, but I don’t actually consider it one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. Mainly because the plot, the main character, and the rest of the movie are complete garbage. The only things that almost save it are, in part, the soundtrack and the occasional joke in the movie that genuinely made me laugh. But otherwise, I found both the main character and much of the story a bit repulsive.
Let’s get back to the plot, which revolves around the spoiled, immature, 30-year-old son of a billionaire who spends his time partying, drinking, and doing silly things. Billy Madison is a character who, from the very first minute—no, from the very first second—is designed for you to hate him completely. From the way he speaks, acts, and even behaves, he clearly shows just how childish and unpleasant he is as a character. Plus, a large part of the movie is devoted to showing Billy going back to school, from preschool all the way through high school.
Pero bueno, yo y mi perfeccionista forma de hacer las cosas me limitan hacia el éxito. Volviendo a Billy Madison, admito que sí ha formado parte de mi infancia y preadolescencia, pero en realidad no la considero de mis favoritas de Adam Sandler. Principalmente porque tanto la trama como el protagonista y el resto de la película es una completa basura. Lo único que casi salva es en parte la banda sonora y uno que otro chiste que tiene la película que sí me hizo reír genuinamente. Pero de resto me pareció un poco repulsivo tanto el protagonista como gran parte de la historia.
Volvamos a su trama, la cual trata del hijo malcriado e inmaduro de caso 30 años de un multimillonario que se la pasa en fiestas, bebiendo y haciendo tonterías. Billy Madison es un personaje que desde el primer minuto, no, desde el primer segundo está hecho para que lo odies por completo. Desde su forma de hablar, actuar y hasta comportarse demuestra mucho lo infantil y desagradable que es como personaje. Además, gran parte de la película está hecha para que veamos a Billy volver a la escuela, desde preescolar hasta preparatoria.

This not only shows us some pretty absurd and awkward moments where we see a young adult acting like an immature child alongside other kids. There’s also that biting, adult-oriented humor which, combined with certain members of the child cast in the film, highlights a discrepancy between what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s definitely not a comedy for everyone, not only because of its frequent double entendres, but also because of some rather suggestive and sexualized scenes.
If you’re someone like me who grew up with and got used to this kind of humor, you might like this movie, but honestly, I don’t recommend it—not even as a starting point for getting into Adam Sandler’s films. One thing we can somewhat salvage from this story is the way the protagonist, Billy Madison, manages to change or mature a little over the course of the movie. Sure, this is barely noticeable if you look closely at his personality, tastes, and way of speaking. But you do see certain details, such as new friendships, his detachment from material things, and his romantic partner.
Esto no solo nos muestra momentos bastante absurdos e incómodos donde vemos a un joven adulto comportarse como un niño inmaduro junto con otros niños. También está ese humor ácido y para adultos que, sumado a cierta parte del elenco infantil que vemos en la película nos hace ver una discrepancia entre lo correcto y lo incorrecto. Definitivamente no es una película de comedia para todo el mundo, no solo por sus frecuentes chistes de doble sentido, sino también por escenarios bastante sugerentes y sexualizados.
Si eres alguien como yo que creció y se acostumbró a este tipo de humor, puede que te guste esta película, pero honestamente no la recomiendo ni para empezar a conocer las películas de Adam Sandler siquiera. Algo que podemos llegar a medio salvar de esta historia es la forma en la que el protagonista, Billy Madison, logra cambiar o madurar un poco a lo largo de la película. Claro, esto casi ni se nota si nos fijamos bien en su personalidad, gustos y formas de hablar. Pero sí se ven ciertos detalles como nuevas amistades, su aislamiento a las cosas materiales y su pareja.

On the other hand, this is a typical cliché we’ll see in later Adam Sandler comedy films: the protagonist ends up with or goes out with the most attractive girl in the entire cast. Another detail we see repeated very often in all of Sandler’s movies is his supporting characters and how hard they try to draw attention to themselves with strange things or unpleasant or absurd scenes they get into.
For example, we see a preschool teacher grab a bottle of white glue and use a brush to smear glue all over her face. There are also characters who turn out to be dirty with weird tastes at the moment, or those who hide their homosexual tendencies from the main character. Even though I’ve been watching Adam Sandler’s comedy movies for as long as I can remember, I still can’t get used to these kinds of jokes or typical clichés in his films. However, there are other types of jokes that I do like and that I admit really make me laugh.
Bueno, al conseguir salir con tu ex-maestra de primaria rubia y atractiva es normal que decidas cambiar, aunque sea un poco, para hacerte quedar bien e “impresionarla”. Por otro lado, esto es un cliché típico que veremos en posteriores películas de comedia de Adam Sandler: que el protagonista se quede o salga con la chica más atractiva de todo el elenco. Otro detalle que vemos muy seguido repetirse en todas las películas de Sandler son sus personajes secundarios y lo mucho que buscan llamar la atención con cosas extrañas o escenas desagradables o absurdas que hacen.
Por ejemplo, vemos a una profesora de preescolar agarrar un envase de pegamento blanco (cola) y con una brocha restregarse pegamento en la cara. También están los personajes que demuestran ser unos sucios con gustos raros al momento o los que ocultan sus gustos homosexuales con el protagonista. Por muchos años que he estado viendo películas de comedia de Adam Sandler desde que tengo memoria, aún no me acostumbro a este tipo de chistes o clichés típicos en sus obras. También tenemos el mismo hecho de los diálogos y comentarios frecuentes que escuchamos sobre lo estúpido o idiota que es el protagonista cuando nadie habla de un hecho más evidente: la inutilidad de su padre al malcriarlo de esa manera.
Podemos tomar el ejemplo de Billy Madison como una crítica hacia la educación o crianza que tienen algunos hijos de millonarios que crecen y terminan volviéndose unos completos idiotas que solo pasan pena. Tal vez y en su momento no haya sido así, pero en la actualidad y con el internet en su máximo apogeo podemos ver en redes sociales a gente de todo tipo, sobre todo a ricachones e hijos de mami y papi haciendo drama y demostrando su inutilidad. Aunque no únicamente tienen que ser ricos, hay malos padres y malos hijos en todas partes.

Another good lesson that can be drawn, in a way, from this ridiculous Adam Sandler movie is the importance of going to school, studying, and graduating. Yeah, it’s like the typical lesson your parents and all the adults these days give you: “You have to study, graduate, and get a career to amount to something in life.” But anyway, I have my own opinion on the matter, which I might share with you someday. But I won’t do that right now; instead, I’d like to wrap up this section by talking about the film’s audiovisual aspects. It doesn’t have the best direction in the world—I can guarantee you that.
The cinematography, color palette, shots, and filming styles are decent for a low-budget comedy film. In fact, I think it was quite expensive given the very few visual effects it has. Although, of course, we have to mention all the practical resources and equipment they used in this film, as well as being able to film both in the surrounding area and inside a huge mansion. Oh, not to mention the absurd number of parties we see in this movie. The sound effects aren’t bad either, but I prefer the soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a rating of 5.5/10 as far as the comedy genre is concerned.
Otra buena lección que se puede extraer de alguna forma de esta película ridícula de Adam Sandler es la importancia de ir a la escuela, estudiar y graduarse. Si, es como la típica lección que te dan tus padres y todos los mayores de hoy en día de que “tienes que estudiar, graduarse, hacer una carrera para ser alguien menos vida”. Pero bueno, yo tengo mi opinión personal al respecto que puede que algún día se los comparta. Pero ahora mismo no lo haré, en cambio pienso mencionarles para finalizar su apartado audiovisual. No tiene la mejor dirección del mundo, eso te lo garantizo.
La fotografía, la paleta de colores, los planos y estilos de grabación son decentes para ser una película de comedia de baja producción. Es más, pienso que fue muy costosa con los poquísimos efectos visuales que tiene. Aunque, claro está, tenemos que mencionar todos los recursos y equipos prácticos que utilizaron en esta película, además de poder grabar tanto en los alrededores como dentro de una enorme mansión. Ah, eso sin mencionar la cantidad absurda de fiestas que vemos en esta película. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero prefiero la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 5.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia.
