Plot
The movie begins in a suburban town in California, in a huge country house where a blonde teenager finds herself alone one night as she goes to the kitchen to make herself something to eat. But before that, she receives an unexpected call from someone who insists on calling her back while they talk about horror movies (thrillers). It’s always nice to feature a horror thriller in this special section I do every year called “Month of Horror,” especially if it’s a classic like the movie I’m going to talk about today. In the case of Scream, I’ve actually thought quite a bit about writing a review for you—not because I don’t like it, but quite the opposite. The thing is, I actually have more memories of its well-known and funny 2000s parody called Scary Movie, which is practically the same thing, but with the Wayans brothers’ signature comedic tone.
So, when I finally got around to watching Scream very recently, I found it impossible not to compare it constantly to Scary Movie from start to finish. The plot, the characters, and even the scripts and dialogue are so similar. So, instead of feeling that “suspense” that an entire generation felt when watching this movie back in the day, what I ended up feeling when I watched it was a mix of laughter and fun, with the occasional absurd moment. But as for surprises or anything like that—no, I found it impossible to feel anything like that, and it’s possible the same thing happened in the past.
Siempre es bueno traer un thriller de terror a esta sección especial que hago cada año llamado “Mes del Terror”, sobre todo si es un clásico como lo es la película que les hablaré hoy. Con el caso de Scream he llegado a pensar bastante en traerles una reseña, no porque no me guste, más bien todo lo contrario. Lo que me pasa con esta película en realidad es que tengo más recuerdos de su conocida y divertida parodia de los años 2000 llamada Scary Movie que es prácticamente lo mismo, pero con el tono humorístico típico de los hermanos Wayans.
Así que, cuando llegué a ver Scream hace muy poco se me hizo imposible no compararla todo el tiempo con Scary Movie de principio a fin. These reasons are referred to in the movie itself as “the rules” that govern every horror film—such as being alone, having sex, or drinking. Yes, that scene—which those who’ve seen it will surely remember—is a classic, as it captures the essence of the film perfectly. It showcases an entire generation of young people who grew up watching horror movies.
And now, these young people have mindsets so warped that they end up thinking and acting as if they were living inside a movie. The director’s message is quite clear here: you have to be careful about how much you let horror movies become a central part of your life. Reality isn’t as simple or formulaic as a horror thriller. And we can see this confirmed by the film’s ending. On the other hand, something else that really caught my attention was the female lead.

Si, esa escena que seguramente los que la vieron recordarán es un clásico ya que representa muy bien la esencia de la película. La demostración de toda una generación de jóvenes que crecieron viendo películas de terror.
Y que ahora dichos jóvenes poseen la mentalidad tan trastornada como para llegar a pensar y actuar de tal forma que estuvieran viviendo una película. El mensaje del director es bastante claro aquí: hay que tener cuidado de hasta qué punto llegas a hacer de las películas de terror algo importante en tu vida. La realidad no es tan simple o genérica como lo es un thriller de terror. Y esto lo podemos confirmar con el final de esta película. Por otro lado, algo que también me llamó mucho la atención es la protagonista.

I’m not talking about the blonde girl played by Drew Barrymore who appears at the beginning, but rather Sidney Prescott, who was played by Neve Campbell. While she may seem like the typical harmless girl haunted by a dark past and all that, in the end we see that she’s not as harmless as she appears to be. You could say that Sidney is the character who manages to break one of the many tropes found in horror thrillers. I’m not just saying this because she breaks one of the rules mentioned in the movie, but also because she manages to defend herself very well.
Instead of just running away to find help—which she does on occasion—when she sees an opportunity, Sidney manages to shake off the killer and even shows us that past traumas aren’t the root of all evil, but rather people’s willingness to become killers and lunatics by letting themselves be consumed by them. Otherwise, the characters we meet throughout the film fulfill their respective roles: the protagonist’s group of friends, the nosy reporter, the useless police officer, and the absent parents. As I mentioned above, the film has many tropes or clichés that make it predictable.

Si bien puede aparentar ser la típica chica inofensiva y traumada por un pasado oscuro y todo eso, al final no la vemos siendo tan inofensiva como lo aparenta ser. Se puede decir que Sidney es el personaje que logra romper con uno de los muchos tropos que existen en el thriller de terror. No solo lo digo porque rompe con una de las reglas que menciona la película, sino también porque logra defenderse muy bien.
En vez de solo huir en busca de ayuda -cosa que sí hace en uno que otro momento- cuando ve la oportunidad, Sidney logra librarse del asesino y hasta nos demuestra que los traumas del pasado no son la causa de todo mal, sino la disposición de la gente de convertirse en asesinos y lunáticos al dejarse llevar por ello. De resto, los personajes que conocemos a lo largo de la película llegan a cumplir con sus papeles correspondientes: el grupo de amigos de la protagonista, la reportera metiche, el oficial inútil y los padres ausentes. Como dije arriba, la película tiene muchos tropos o clichés que la hacen predecible.

At least for the most part—and I’m not just saying this because I’ve seen Scary Movie way more times than Scream in my life and know the movie’s plot inside and out. You know, what happens when someone goes down to the garage, or when a school principal is left alone in his office, and so on. But the most predictable thing about this movie is the identity of the town’s killer(s). From the very beginning, the movie bombards us with clues, details, and scenes that make us think a certain character is actually the killer, but as if that weren’t enough, the movie itself plays on this in one of its dialogues.
For example, the scene at the video store makes it clear that “everyone is a suspect” in these murders, but the one most likely to be the killer is the one who literally acts like a deranged lunatic. The shifty gaze, the way he speaks, the way he appears on camera as if he were a jump scare, etc. I’m not saying the movie is boring because it’s predictable; I understand that this is part of its appeal due to the many similarities it shares with other films in its genre. But even with all its clichés, it’s entertaining to watch.

La mirada desviada, la forma de hablar, la manera de aparecer en cámara como si fuera un jumpscare, etc. No digo que la película sea aburrida debido a lo predecible que es, entiendo que este sea su atractivo debido a la cantidad de similitudes que tiene con otras cintas de su género. Pero aún con todos sus clichés, es entretenido de ver.

While the movie is certainly predictable and easy to watch, despite all its clichés, the message or moral of the story is clear and easy to understand. In the end, you could say that Scream delivers everything you’d expect from a horror thriller of that era, but with a humorous and self-referential twist. But be warned: the film only works if you’re looking for something typical of this horror subgenre; it’s a different story if you’re expecting something unique or eye-catching, to be honest. Don’t expect any jump scares or shocking moments that will blow your mind, either.
Another strength of this film is its audiovisual presentation, which has aged very well despite the decades that have passed. West Craven achieved a lot with very few resources and visual elements. He didn’t even use CGI at any point in this film—he just wanted to give us the most realistic result possible. The effects and camera angles, the movement styles typical of a horror thriller, and the way certain moments of tension are framed are among the most striking aspects of this film.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the suspense and horror genres are concerned.
