Hello, cinema fans. We’re back again today with a rather interesting recommendation for those of you who enjoy psychological thrillers and science fiction. The movie I’m bringing you today is a gem of horror cinema that seems to have been forgotten by an entire generation—except for me, of course. Based on a screenplay by Mark Protosevich, The Cell was directed by Tarsem Singh and stars Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Check out the most surreal movie I’ve ever seen starring the beautiful Jennifer Lopez.

Plot
The film begins by showing us a vast, desolate desert where a woman dressed in white is riding on horseback, heading toward what lies beyond the enormous sand mountains. At the end of her journey, she comes upon a small clearing between the mountains where there are some dry logs and a boy playing with a small mirror attached to a necklace that reflects the sunlight. She tries to approach him to convince him to join her in playing with a toy boat that suddenly appears, but the boy refuses to move from where he is out of fear of a character he has imagined.
Trama
Trailer & Review
Here's the trailer for the movie:
Speaking of old movies that I never got around to watching again after so many years—and that have remained stored in my subconscious as somewhat blurry yet lasting images of scenes that made a deep impression on me at such a young age—I just had to share this little gem we have here with you. A rather underrated and surely long-forgotten film from my era due to its artistic style and its somewhat… “creative” direction, you might say. The Cell is one of those movies you don’t expect to end up liking after the first few minutes, but somehow it manages to capture your attention.
This could be for various reasons, since this isn’t just another psychological thriller—it’s supposed to be a horror film, specifically psychological horror. However, we shouldn’t overlook the sci-fi element either, with all this technology shown at the beginning that’s used to immerse our protagonist in a person’s mind and recreate an illusory world created by their subconscious. That’s right—this movie plays with various elements, and I think it manages to balance everything very well, at least up to a certain point.

But before I tell you about that, I’d like to mention first that, since this is a horror movie, you’d expect to see the kind of villain typical of any other horror movie—a serial killer, a sadist, or something similar to what we’ve usually seen in typical slasher horror films. However, what we have here is something a bit different. Yes, he’s a serial killer and a complete psychopath, but he’s also a schizophrenic who’s deeply traumatized by a harsh and cruel childhood. We get to see all of this and more in this movie, but in a way that might seem too outlandish for some viewers.
While it’s true that the story involves a serial killer hiding a victim who needs to be saved and all that, the film actually focuses more on the twisted and disturbed mind of this deranged and sadistic criminal. We experience all of this through the eyes of a psychologist and employee at an experimental center that primarily treats child and paralyzed patients. A woman named Catherine Deane, who can barely control the side effects of the experimental technology she uses to delve into her patients’ minds.

But due to a series of events that take place in the first half-hour of the film, Catherine must now delve into the mind of Carl Rudolph Stargher, a sadistic, schizophrenic serial killer who is also paralyzed. She must persuade the criminal as she delves into his subconscious in order to obtain information that will help the officers find his latest victim alive in time. However, the main problem lies in what lies within this criminal’s twisted mind and how it manages to affect our protagonist in certain ways the deeper she delves into his thoughts.
The film maintains a pace that never wears anyone out or bores them. Its runtime of over an hour and a half is perfect for showing us everything there is to glimpse—both of Carl’s twisted mind and the way his past traumas led him to become a serial killer. What mainly caught my attention about this film was its audiovisual presentation, which is fascinating and quite striking—even more so for the era in which it was produced. However, there are things I didn’t like about this film, such as its plot.

Don’t get me wrong—everything is well-structured and developed until a little past the halfway point of the movie. The pacing never slows down between scenes, the performances aren’t bad either, and there are some who manage to stand out from the rest, as is the case with the film’s antagonist. But the way it ends—or rather, the way the final act unfolds—is something that just doesn’t quite convince me at all. But to explain this, I have to mention that in certain parts of the film, we see two storylines unfolding simultaneously in an intercut manner.
Ultimately, those scenes work well in some respects because they successfully wrap up the case. But on the other hand, I don’t like how it ends—whether because it shifts from being a psychological horror film to something involving action and science fiction in a somewhat twisted way. I don’t know—that “final showdown” just doesn’t make sense, even with all the hidden details or messages they throw in to try to give meaning to what’s happening. I also understand Catherine’s intentions and all that, but come on—we’re talking about a serial killer and an incorrigible sadist.

It seems that at a certain point toward the end, both the movie and the show itself forget that they’re dealing with a serial killer, but hey, it’s Jennifer Lopez, so let’s not expect too much from her. I’m not saying she did a bad job acting, either—the truth is, she’s done well up until this point in the finale. On the other hand, as I mentioned above, there are other characters who really stood out thanks to the excellent performances by the actors playing those roles. A notable example is Vincent D’Onofrio, who did an excellent job as Carl Rudolph Stargher.
We’re talking about a sadistic, deranged serial killer with multiple personalities and a completely twisted mind. Finally, I don’t have much to say about Vince Vaughn’s performance here, since I’m not used to seeing him act in anything other than adult comedies, to be honest. Mind you, I’m not saying he did a bad job—he does have a few scenes where he manages to stand out a bit, at least. But the most noteworthy thing we could mention here would be the strange message this movie tries to convey regarding Carl’s entire case.

In the end, it all comes down to upbringing; what you see, learn, and experience firsthand in your own home is what can shape you for the rest of your life. However, there is truth in what Vince’s character says at the end about those who have endured horrific things at such a young age and yet grew up without becoming as cruel as Carl Rudolph, for example. Once again, the true horror this film conveys doesn’t lie solely in the threats or torture inflicted by a deranged serial killer, but in everything he is capable of doing or becoming.
The film makes extensive use of visual elements and art direction to depict, through audiovisual means, the twisted nature and mindset of a sadistic serial killer like Carl Rudolph. However, the very emphasis placed on all of this also overshadows the film’s original purpose of saving a victim and bringing this criminal to justice. But then again, I suppose that since this is a psychological thriller, they end up using a lot of visual elements and a style of direction that conveys all of Carl’s trauma and what turned him into who he is. But in the end, one thing doesn’t take away from the other.

Aside from its audiovisual and artistic aspects, the film doesn’t stand out any more than one would expect. The director did a spectacular job with the cinematography as well as with the shots, camera angles, camera movements, compositions, color palettes, lighting, shadows, and so on. The practical visual effects, transitions, makeup, and costumes are also particularly noteworthy. The same goes for the sound effects, which really grab your attention in certain scenes of this film. The soundtrack also takes center stage at many points, especially toward the end.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 within the psychological horror, suspense, and science fiction genres.
