In the early 60s when one racing error will cost you your life. The stakes were at its maximum and victory means a whole lot more than just headlines and pretty pictures. Alot of comparisons being drawn between the racers from the past and the current champions.
But you cant just compare men with balls of stainless steel back then to current era of safe racing. Its is the reason why a biopic abt Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby is being done 50 years after the event and what kind of men they were which lead to their success.
Apart from that, Americans are poking fun at Italians especially Ferrari. They dig a lot out of their superiority during the WWII and how the Europeans owes alot from them. In one scene Enzo Ferrari salutes Ken Miles. Not sure if that really happened in real life.
It also shows how business and marketing destroy the passionate workforce behind their brand. Sales figures and public image comes first. It shows when Henry Ford II doesnt give an arse while standing on the podium. In the end its all about selling Ford cars to the new generation of Americans.
Christian Bale is the heart of the movie. The guy can really swap between roles from movie to movie. Matt Damon does a great job helping Bale’s character to stand.
It is not always about crossing the line first. Its sometimes about what kind of man comes out of it.
