Some do not understand the complaints about women superheroes being 'Mary Sue' (a female character depicted as unrealistically lacking in flaws or weaknesses). But some superheroes do not wear capes. Especially mothers.
Sofia is a mother whose pilot son has been shot down while on a humanitarian mission. She then dropped everything and engaged in a journey to find her son through hell literally. Just with sheer will. Motherly love is indeed a superpower.
This is based on a real-life event in conflicting Ukraine back in 2014. And the film was finished right after the beginning of the global pandemic in 2020. It has also recently won at the film festival in Hong Kong. A conflicting nation produces a masterpiece such as this. One can only wonder...
The current Ukraine war is strangely the least covered by the mainstream media of all conflicts in history. It is ironic that a tale of war such as this offers popcorn at the entrance. It is no entertainment. In fact, it is almost a sin to feast on a sweet popcorn treatment. I can hear some loud munching while the horror of war is being screened. There was even laughter after the screening ends. Martin Scorsese is indeed right about the current breed of audience.
