A group of self-righteous, teenage social media influencers drove their shiny new car into a quiet town and judge a local guy for having a small dick because he is carrying a gun.
Then they crashed into an old lady's house which eventually lead to her death.
Right after that, they bought in a bus full of their friends and throw a party.
Thus, watching them being decimated one by one at the hands of the Leatherface is pure joy.
In an Esquire article in 2014, Hooper told them that the 1974's movie is "..an allegory for the Vietnam War." He said of the scene in a van listening to the news on the radio of war and disaster, and their effect on our psyche.
Thus, this 2022 version can be a satire of the type of human being spawned by the machine we call 'the Internet'. Most of the things we say online wouldn't even occur to us in a physical meet-up. And how we feel so 'disconnected' being away from social media. We wonder what is currently trending there and the fear of being left out. That is the 'metaverse' and yes, it is already here.
The cast for the 1974's film was also a reflection on the social condition at the time. Hooper said once in an article, "...but in retrospect, the film casts an eerie reflection on what Jimmy Carter would later call America’s “crisis of confidence,” particularly for those of the working and middle classes who started to feel the sting of falling from their post-World War II ascension and seeing their American Dream disemboweled."
Thus the tagline for the 1974's movie was "Who will survive and what will be left of them".
Not very far from what we have now in the age of the 'metaverse'. Most have the sense of entitlement to say anything about everything, anytime.
"I am right regardless of what you say", "This is my page and I can say what I want", "We have the rights to voice out our opinion",
And these people vote. And they wonder why those on top are utter shit. Like George Carlin said once "...garbage in, garbage out". The label of democracy they are promoting is light-years away from what it once was.
"Only adult male Athenian citizens who had completed their military training as ephebes had the right to vote". The tough and the educated. And since fools are in a bigger ratio than the clever, and only the majority wins, that utopian dream will forever be just that. A dream.
Leatherface could be the embodiment of what America is post World War 2. A global slaughter machine. Just like how they clear the Native American landscapes with their chainsaws.
Or maybe Leatherface is not evil. Maybe it is the label we like to give to people with different views. The pain of unplugging out from the indoctrination and the fear of change can be equated to a slaughter. It cannot be killed. Just like Leatherface.
Thus maybe that is why the tagline for this 2022' film is "The face of madness returns". And it is not the face of Leatherface. And the reviews are as flat as General Zod and friends got stuck in that flat mirror floating in space. Just like us with our flat devices roaming the metaverse.
For the 2013 Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the tagline is "Evil wears many faces". How apt.
