Deliver us from Evil (2020), an excellent korean action film.

Review by @nbarrios67 · 1260d · of Deliver Us from Evil

Spies, assassins, kidnappings and large doses of action, this film is an explosive mix of genres brought to us by director Hong Won-chan, with a tormented anti-hero, a violent Japanese gangster from a yakuza clan and a transsexual who will play a prominent role in this story. These three characters are involved in an environment of revenge, kidnapping and organ trafficking. The film is called Deliver Us From Devil (2020).

The film is set in South Korea, Japan and Thailand and when watching it the viewer is able to distinguish predominantly cold colors in the photography, (South Korea, and Japan) which we immediately relate to the melancholic character of the protagonist.

In Thailand the colors are warmer, there is a lot of yellow tonality that manages to convey the danger before the different action scenes. The neon lights also stand out to recreate the urban and night environments of Bangkok.

The action scenes are spectacular, clear, very rough and forceful with great demonstrations of martial arts and fights with knives, machetes and scalpels. There is a lot of graphic violence.

The action choreographies are great and brutal showing action scenes between the antagonists and clashes with criminal groups of quite numerical superiority against these two characters.

The protagonist, In-nam, is a tough and tormented antihero, former spy for the South Korean secret services and current contract killer, must face one last assignment in Japan. In this last job, he discovers a secret from his past that forces him to face a terrible adventure in Thailand, where he must rescue a nine-year-old daughter, whom he did not know he had, from a criminal gang specialized in the extraction and sale of human organs.

The man killed by our protagonist was the brother of a dangerous man named Ray, nicknamed The Butcher. He seeks revenge and begins a relentless search for his brother's killer.

Yoo-yi, a South Korean transsexual woman based in Thailand, helps In-nam to get his daughter by guiding him through the city of Bankok and serving as a translator, at first for money to pay for the sex change operation, but later she helps him out of remorse and conscience. She is the nicest character in the film.

Hwang Jung-ming plays In-Nam, Lee Jung-jae plays the sadistic yakuza ganster Ray and Park Jung-min is the kind transsexual Yoo-yi, Its director Hong Won-Chan, was one of the screenwriters of the highly praised South Korean films The Chaser, The Yellow Sea and Confession of Murder. This is his second film after an appreciable film framed within the Slasher genre of 2015 called Office.

Deliver Us From Devil is a powerful Asian action film with an impeccable technical workmanship that shows large doses of violence with quite solvent interpretations, well filmed and it is also a good story about personal redemption. It has good pace and tension, as well as spectacular action scenes, it is also very entertaining, it is highly recommended with nothing to envy to Hollywood movies.

I highly recommend this film, a big greeting to all the CineTv community, I wish you good health and prosperity in this year 2023.
