Licorice Pizza is a very simple story that narrates the encounters and misunderstandings of two young people, a 15 year old Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) and a 25 year old Alana Kane (Alana Haim). It's a classic love story a bit delicate given the age difference, but in Paul Thomas Anderson's hands it turns out to be a gentle tale.
A young man tries to woo the girl falls in and out of love with her, and she falls in and out of love with him and so on. There is comedy, drama and romance. This is the whole plot.
They are not an attractive couple, but they exude great chemistry even in the moments when they just look at each other.
The protagonist is a teenage artist who is known in the showbiz of 1970s Los Angeles, our heroine works as a school photo assistant, who at first only out of curiosity attends a dinner invitation from her teenage crush. Later she works as his chaperone, and then as a partner in a sale of inflatable mattresses. They live some vicissitudes together, she tries to become an actress.
Gary is looking for an identity, he is a young man looking to get out of adolescence and shows to have a good eye for business: his sale of water mattresses and his subsequent Pinball room. Alana at 25 doesn't know what she wants and feels a strange attraction to this teenage entrepreneur.

In my very particular opinion I would say that this is a script failure where the absurdity predominates over the narrative that was developing between the two main characters.
The movie is recommendable, but if what we want is a love story between two people looking for personal and emotional growth, there was no need to involve meaningless references that contribute nothing to the main story of the movie.
I felt I was watching two different movies at the same time, and I let myself be carried away by the love story and especially by the last part of the movie where in a desperate race and after evaluating certain situations the protagonists run to meet each other, and when they do they literally fall to the ground.
The part of the film references gives for another movie, very different from the love story that is presented to us at the beginning. The film is excellently filmed, the setting of the city of Los Angeles in 1973 stands out.
At the 2022 Oscars Licorice Pizza is nominated for: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
If they had shortened or removed those references that hinder the film, for sure the film would win Best Original Screenplay and even Best Picture. The direction is impeccable but I think Kenneth Branagh ("Belfast") and Jane Campion ("The Power of the Dog"), have a better chance of winning, and watch out over there is Steven Spielberg with a ("West Side Story").
Cooper Hoffman is the son of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Alana Haim is one of the members of the rock-pop group Haim. Very good debut for both of them.
It is noteworthy that in the film appear Alana Haim's parents and sisters playing precisely the roles of parents and sisters. It is worth mentioning that Haim's mother was Paul Thomas Anderson's art teacher.

Paul Thomas Anderson states that the character of Gary Valentine is inspired by his friend Gary Goetzman Producer of the late Jonathan Demme, he founded in 1998 with Tom Hanks the production company Playtone. He produced The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia and Band of Brothers. This as a child was an actor, in his teens he sold waterbeds and a PinBall arcade.
Excellent choice of music for his soundtrack: David Bowie, Nina Simone, Chuck Berry, The Doors, Paul McCartney, Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman, Clarence , Taj Mahal, Clarence Carter, Blood, Sweat and Tears and others.
Don't look for beautiful protagonists because there aren't any, they all have flaws and virtues, the script is not coherent, I would only recommend this movie because I know that the protagonists manage to fall in love at the end and are able to run into each other's arms without knowing it, that to me is one of the greatest examples of love I have seen on screen.

Es una clásica historia de amor un poco delicada dada la diferencia de edad, pero en manos de Paul Thomas Anderson resulta ser un cuento amable.
Un joven intenta cortejar a la chica se enamora y desenamora de ella, y ella se enamora y desenamora de él y así sucesivamente. Hay comedia, drama y romance. Esta es toda la trama.
No son una pareja atractiva, pero desprenden una gran química incluso en los momentos en que sólo se miran.
La protagonista es una artista adolescente conocida en el mundo del espectáculo de Los Ángeles de los años 70, nuestra heroína trabaja como asistente de fotografía en la escuela, que al principio sólo por curiosidad asiste a una invitación a cenar de su enamorado adolescente. Más tarde trabaja como su acompañante, y luego como socia en una venta de colchones hinchables. Viven juntos algunas vicisitudes, ella intenta convertirse en actriz.
Gary busca una identidad, es un joven que busca salir de la adolescencia y demuestra tener buen ojo para los negocios: su venta de colchones de agua y su posterior sala de Pinball. Alana a sus 25 años no sabe lo que quiere y siente una extraña atracción por este adolescente emprendedor.

En mi muy particular opinión diría que se trata de un fallo de guion donde predomina el absurdo sobre la narración que se desarrollaba entre los dos personajes principales.
La película es recomendable, pero si lo que queremos es una historia de amor entre dos personas que buscan un crecimiento personal y emocional, no era necesario involucrar referencias sin sentido que no aportan nada a la historia principal de la película.
Sentí que estaba viendo dos películas diferentes al mismo tiempo, y me dejé llevar por la historia de amor y sobre todo por la última parte de la película donde en una carrera desesperada y después de evaluar ciertas situaciones los protagonistas corren a encontrarse, y cuando lo hacen caen literalmente al suelo.
La parte de las referencias de la película da para otra película, muy diferente a la historia de amor que se nos presenta al principio. La película está excelentemente filmada, destaca la ambientación de la ciudad de Los Ángeles en 1973.
En los Oscars de 2022 Pizza de Regaliz está nominada a: Mejor Película, Mejor Director y Mejor Guión Original.
Si hubieran acortado o eliminado esas referencias que entorpecen la película, seguro que la película ganaría el Mejor Guión Original e incluso la Mejor Película. La dirección es impecable pero creo que Kenneth Branagh ("Belfast") y Jane Campion ("El poder del perro"), tienen más posibilidades de ganar, y ojo que por ahí está Steven Spielberg con un ("West Side Story").

Cabe destacar que en la película aparecen los padres y hermanas de Alana Haim interpretando precisamente los papeles de padres y hermanas. Cabe mencionar que la madre de Haim fue la profesora de arte de Paul Thomas Anderson.

No busques protagonistas hermosas porque no las hay, todas tienen defectos y virtudes, el guión no es coherente, solo recomendaría esta película porque sé que los protagonistas al final logran enamorarse y son capaces correr a los brazos del otro sin saberlo, que para mí es uno de los mayores ejemplos de amor que he visto en pantalla.
