[Eng / Esp] The African Queen, a Unique Adventure / La Reina Africana, una Aventura Unica.

Review by @nbarrios67 · 1903d · of The African Queen

An adventurer, a spinster missionary, a ship in ruins navigating the Congo in authentic African settings amid rapids, leeches and enemy fire, and the backdrop of World War I set the perfect stage for an adventure film, which benefits from a vigorous and agile direction, its name: "The African Queen". With doses of drama, action and comedy, John Huston manages to direct the film smoothly.

In 1948, John Huston founded an independent film production company, called Horizon, together with producer Sam Spiegel, (later winner of several Oscars for being responsible for classics such as The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia). The second film of this company is The African Queen, a novel written by C.S. Forester in 1935. In 1946, Warners bought the rights to make a film with Bette Davis and David Niven, and previously RKO had also considered a project for Charles Laughton and his wife Elsa Lanchester.

In Warner's eyes, the material had little commercial potential and it was eager to sell the rights. The Horizon production company did not have the fifty thousand dollars demanded, but Spiegel requested a loan from the company that rented the sound to the studios and secured the participation of both a Chicago company and Romulus Films, a company based in London, which in return would take the rights to distribute the film in Europe.

Spiegel presented the female lead to Katharine Hepburn, informing her that he was partnered with John Huston. Subsequently, he visited Humphrey Bogart and presented the project to him, offering him the other lead role and informing him of Hepburn's participation. At the time, the actor met with Huston, who told him that he was the best person for the role given his personality, which was enough to convince Bogart to participate in the film.

The script of the film is the work of James Agee, a person with serious problems related to the consumption of tobacco and alcohol, who began his career as a screenwriter precisely with "The African Queen". Huston locks him and Agee in a hotel on the outskirts of the city of Santa Barbara, California, so that they could dedicate themselves to writing, playing sports and isolating themselves from temptations. But Huston had to travel to San Francisco for a few days and when he was there he was informed that his co-writer had suffered a heart attack.

John Huston was forced to write a poor ending, so he later rewrote it in Africa with Peter Viertel, a childhood friend. With the experience of filming The African Queen, Viertel wrote the novel White Hunter, Black Heart, which Clint Eastwood made into a film in 1990. As a curious fact, Agee also wrote the screenplay for "The Night of the Hunter", the only film directed by the excellent actor Charles Laughton.

The director of photography was the British Jack Cardiff, who had done the same work in two distinguished films, "Black Narcissus" (1947) and "The Red Shoes" (1948), both by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

With humor, the film mixes danger and romance within a plot that recreates the influence of a European conflict in Africa. Here, the unlikely cinematic pairing of Katherine Hepburn with Humphrey Bogart results in unparalleled, empathetic performances where the pair's rapport is palpable.

The story tells the adventure of an alcoholic Canadian river navigator (Charlie Allnut) who transports goods on the Ulanga River and an English missionary (Rose Sayer) who embark on a journey in a small boat in an area of Africa dominated by Germany in 1914. The Germans set fire to the village where Rose and her brother had a religious mission. Rose's brother, (Robert Morley), dies, then she and Charlie Allnut flee in the boat African Queen and later pretend to torpedo a German warship to take revenge. The evolution of Hepburn's character from a bitter spinster to an adventurous woman is surprising.

The scenes of greater risk were carried out in London, however, in the work highlights the exoticism of the natural scenery. Some special effects have been resented with the passage of time, such as the descent of the river rapids, where it is clear that the boat and its passengers are a toy and 2 dolls in a model with water, and the attack of mosquitoes where the transparencies are too noticeable.

It is a film with a simple plot, and that was prophesied as a big failure by the Hollywood industry. Huston thought that if the actors suffered as much as their characters, no one would question the authenticity of the story. It is said that Huston was really just looking for an excuse to go to Africa to hunt an elephant.

Curiosities of the shooting and the film.

John Huston and the technical crew spent nine weeks in the Belgian Congo, facing all kinds of problems: rains, army of ants and plagues of mosquitoes. Some of the crew ended up getting sick with malaria and dysentery, including Hepburn. Only Huston and Bogart managed to save themselves from dysentery, as the only liquid they drank was whiskey.

During the filming Humphrey Bogart was accompanied by his wife, the actress Lauren Bacall, they complained continuously about the shooting location (mosquitoes, heat, rain), however with this film Bogart won the only Oscar (best actor) of his career. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director, Best Actress and Best Screenplay, being beaten that year (1951), respectively by George Stevens (A Place in the Sun), Vivien Leight (A Streetcar Named Desire) and Michael Wilson and Harry Brown (A Place in the Sun).

The ship, found by director John Huston and producer Sam Spiegel in the Congo, was used in 1912 to move goods and passengers in Uganda and the Belgian Congo, her real name being Livingstone.

Bogart could not reproduce the English accent, so the navigator's nationality had to be changed to Canadian.

In Stanleyville, a town in the Central Congo, Huston should have received his stars and part of the technical crew, but he did not, as he had just gone hunting.

Katherine Hepburn forced all the cast members to comply with strict hygiene rules, being the butt of jokes by Bogart and Huston. In any case, the actress fell ill with dysentery.

This is an everlasting cult work, a very simple but entertaining story, very well filmed, excellently acted, with spectacular photography, well received by the public of the time and the specialized critics. It tells a whole odyssey, with protagonists with opposite characters that attract each other.

Although there are many people who do not like the ending, I choose it as one of the best I have seen: Rose and Charlie have been caught by the Germans and about to be hanged by spies, Charlie asks the German commander (Peter Bull) to marry them before executing them, thus producing a mythical phrase: "By the authority vested in me by Kaiser Wilhelm II, I declare you man and wife. Proceed with the execution." Then the wreck of the ship African Queen sinks the German ship Luisa, resulting in a happy ending with the newlyweds swimming away in confusion.
