I just saw the story of Romeo and Juliet, from the perspective of Puerto Ricans and Americans, the Sharks and the Jets gang, an excellent and colorful setting in the late 1950s. This Steven Spielberg film is an homage version of a classic directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins in 1961.
The story revolves around the forbidden love of Tony and Maria who are victims of a sudden and irrepressible passion. Rachel Zegler's performance stands out here, leaving Ansel Elgort in the background.
But Ariana DeBose as Anita, is the one who takes over the film whenever she has the opportunity, this actress in 2019 goes from theater to cinema being one of the protagonists of Ryan Murphy's film The Prom in which she shared screen with Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep.
Her predecessor in the original film , Rita Moreno, in 1957 gets the Oscar that year for her role as Anita.
It is difficult to choose which of the two musical performances is better, here it is important to highlight Spielberg's preference for light, in contrast to the scene filmed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins:

The violence in this version is more explicit in this tragic story, rival gangs that are racist and enemies of the law. The Jets are white, born and raised in the United States, the Sharks are first generation immigrants from Puerto Rico.
The Jets take to the streets of Manhattan with a jazz riff, debasing a Puerto Rican flag, and the Sharks show up to defend their turf. There is no real dialogue for almost eight minutes in the film, just fighting.
These two rival gangs meet again at a school dance, where racial and territorial divisions are evident.
It is at this dance where Tony and Maria fall in love. Tony is a friend of the Jets' leader, Riff, and Maria is the sister of the Sharks' leader, Bernardo. The Jets and the Sharks agree to fight, partly because of their ongoing feud and because Tony and Maria shared a dance. At the very least, Tony tries to quell the racially motivated turf war between two rival gangs.
Rita Moreno the original Anita plays in this version the role of Valentina, the owner of a candy store where Tony sleeps in the basement, and also performs the song Somewhere.
In the confrontation the two rival gang leaders finally die. Bernardo kills Riff and Tony kills Bernardo. After visualizing these events in Spielberg's film, he shows Maria singing the song "I Feel Pretty", achieving a devastating effect because while she sings about her love, we behind the screen know that her life will never be the same, as it is marked by violence.

With this film, Steven Spielberg remakes a musical that once won 10 Oscars. The new version has garnered 7 Oscar nominations for 2021, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress.
Leonard Bernstein's music and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are never altered. Women are given more of a voice, there is more use of the Spanish language, and the character of Anybody is recognized in a more inclusive way.
The cost of this film comes to $100 million, making it one of the most expensive Hollywood musicals of all time, but unfortunately this effort has not been rewarded at the box office.
In my opinion the film is bearable, with a dazzling use of scenery, it is a correct update of the original, which is a little more incisive in its social criticism, with impeccable direction both artistic and musical. The performances are uneven, but not bad. In addition, it respects the era in which the 1961 film was set.
Ariana DeBose deserves the Oscar award for Best Supporting Actress for her brightness and energetic performance.
I liked it, but it carries the weight of a classic that many considered untouchable, which makes this adaptation look like sacrilege.

En mi opinión la película es soportable, con un deslumbrante uso de la escenografía, es una correcta actualización de la original, que es un poco más incisiva en su crítica social, con una impecable dirección tanto artística como musical. Las actuaciones son desiguales, pero no están mal. Además, respeta la época en la que se ambientó la película de 1961.
Ariana DeBose merece el Oscar a la mejor actriz de reparto por su brillante y enérgica interpretación.
Me ha gustado, pero tiene el peso de un clásico que muchos consideraban intocable, lo que hace que esta adaptación parezca un sacrilegio.
