ORIGEN

En el año 1974, Brian De Palma presenta una obra que en su época resulto ser un fracaso de crítica y publico, sus protagonistas son Paul Williams, (también responsable de la Banda Sonora), William Finley como el fantasma, a Jessica Harper (ensu primer papel y antes de Suspiria) como Fénix; y Gerrit Graham en el papel de un cantante de Rock Glam llamado Beef.

In 1974, Brian De Palma presents a work that at the time turned out to be a critical and public failure, its protagonists are Paul Williams, (also responsible for the soundtrack), William Finley as the ghost, Jessica Harper (her first role and before Suspiria) as Phoenix; and Gerrit Graham in the role of a Rock Glam singer named Beef.

Es una trama simple: Swan (Paul Williams), un importante productor de una compañía discográfica llamada Death Records quien ha recibido tantos discos de oro que ha pensado seriamente guardarlos en el Fuerte Knox, roba las canciones a un desconocido compositor llamado Winslow Leach (William Finley). Esta composición es una cantata basada en la obra Fausto del escritor alemán Goethe.

It's a simple plot: Swan (Paul Williams), an important producer of a record company called Death Records who has received so many gold records that he has seriously thought of storing them in Fort Knox, steals the songs from an unknown composer named Winslow Leach (William Finley). This composition is a cantata based on the play Faust by the German writer Goethe.

Winslow intenta reclamar sus derechos sobre su música y va a la casa de Swan, donde conoce a Fénix , que busca audicionar para la cantata que él escribió, y se entera que esta se usara para inaugurar un templo del rock, “El Paraíso”. Queda enamorado de ella de inmediato y ésta convencido de que ella es la interprete ideal para su obra.

Winslow tries to reclaim his rights to his music and goes to Swan's house, where he meets Phoenix, who is looking to audition for the cantata he wrote, and learns that it will be used to inaugurate a rock temple, "The Paradise". He immediately falls in love with her and is convinced that she is the ideal interpreter for his work.

Es golpeado y echado de la casa de Swan, maltrado y mal herido es conseguido por dos policias que trabajan a las órdenes de Swan y le siembran drogas, hecho por el cual es sentenciado a cadena perpetua por que es enviado a la cárcel de Sing Sing. Allí, le son extraídos sus dientes, enterándose seis meses después que próximamente su cantata será estrenada en “El Paraíso”. Winslow se vuelve loco, escapa de la cárcel y llega a las oficinas de Death Records en donde sufre un accidente que logra desfigurar su rostro y pierde las cuerdas vocales. Huye de allí, y se lanza al rio “East River”. Es declarado muerto pero no es así, sobrevive y llega hasta “El Paraíso”, en donde se cuela por la parte de atrás y roba vestuario del show a presentar en la inauguración. A partir de ahí, comienza a sabotear el show de Swan, hasta que éste llega a un acuerdo con el compositor para que su protegida, Fénix sea la estrella del espectáculo musical. Swan nuevamente lo engaña robándole la cantata completa mientras ordenaba a sus subalternos para sellar el fantasma hasta el interior del estudio de grabación con una pared de ladrillo.

He is beaten and thrown out of Swan's house, mistreated and badly wounded, he is caught by two policemen who work under Swan's orders and plant drugs on him, for which he is sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to Sing Sing prison. There, his teeth are extracted, and six months later he learns that his cantata will soon be premiered in "The Paradise". Winslow goes crazy, escapes from prison and arrives at the Death Records offices where he suffers an accident that disfigures his face and loses his vocal cords. He flees from there, and throws himself into the East River. He is declared dead but he survives and arrives at "The Paradise", where he sneaks in through the back and steals the costumes for the show to be presented at the opening. From there, he begins to sabotage Swan's show, until he reaches an agreement with the composer so that his protégé, Phoenix, will be the star of the musical show. Swan again tricks him by stealing the entire cantata while ordering his minions to seal the ghost to the inside of the recording studio with a brick wall.

En este punto, logra destruir la pared y retoma su venganza contra Swam al advertirle a Beef que no interprete su obra, este hace caso omiso y es electrocutado en pleno show por El Fantasma. Allí entra Fénix en el escenario y ejecuta la obra tal cual como la concibió Winslow, recibiendo ovaciones del público. Swam le ofrece la fama a Fénix, el fantasma le advierte que tenga cuidado, pero ella se deja seducir por Swam, ante la triste mirada del Fantasma quien decide suicidarse, pero no muere ya que el contrato firmado con Swan no se lo permite hasta que Swam Muera.

At this point, he manages to destroy the wall and resumes his revenge against Swam by warning Beef not to perform his work, Beef ignores and is electrocuted in mid-show by The Phantom. There, Phoenix enters the stage and performs the work as Winslow conceived it, receiving standing ovations from the audience. Swam offers Phoenix fame, the Phantom warns her to be careful, but she allows herself to be seduced by Swam, to the sad look of the Phantom who decides to commit suicide, but does not die since the contract signed with Swan does not allow him to do so until Swam dies.

ORIGEN

El Fantasma, vuelve a las oficinas de Swan y encuentra unas grabaciones que revelan el momento en que este le vende su alma al diablo, y cual es su debilidad, si la cinta se destruye, Swan muere. Sin embargo también observa en otras grabaciones cual es el plan de Swan para atraer más publico al teatro, y descubre que van a matar en vivo y por televisión a Fénix, por lo que acude a salvarla, no sin antes quemar sin intención la sala de videos. Swan salva a Fénix de un francotirador en una recreación de la boda de ella y Swan. En un final trágico, Swan empieza a descomponerse mostrándose pedazos de cara quemados, el fantasma lo ataca pero también comienza a morir, el público esta exaltado creyendo que esto es parte del espectáculo y ocurre una orgia de baile y muerte ante la mirada desesperada de Fénix.

The Phantom, returns to Swan's offices and finds some recordings that reveal the moment when he sells his soul to the devil, and which is his weakness, if the tape is destroyed, Swan dies. However, he also observes in other recordings what Swan's plan is to attract more audiences to the theater, and discovers that they are going to kill Phoenix live on television, so he goes to save her, but not before unintentionally burning the video room. Swan saves Phoenix from a sniper in a reenactment of her and Swan's wedding. In a tragic ending, Swan begins to decompose showing pieces of burnt face, the ghost attacks him but also begins to die, the audience is exalted believing that this is part of the show and an orgy of dancing and death occurs before the desperate gaze of Phoenix.

Inicialmente la película iba a llamarse “El Fantasma”, título que no fue posible usar por consideraciones legales con la empresa de King Features Syndicate, poseedora de los derechos del comis llamado “El Fantasma”.

El nombre de la compañía de disco de Swan era Swan Song Enterpises, pero al faltar pocos meses para terminar la película el manager del grupo de Rock Led Zeppelin creo una empresa con el mismo nombre, para evitar enredos legales Brian De Palma se vio obligado a eliminar todas las referencias visuales al nombre, sin embargo al observar con atención la película es posible visualizar alguna de ellas.

Se nota la influencia de la obra “El Retratoo de Dorian Gray” de Oscar Wilde, cuando Winslow encuentra la cinta en donde Swan intento suicidase ya que estaba envejeciendo y no podía soportarlo, allí se le aparece el diablo con su misma figura en el espejo, ocurriendo el pacto con sangre a través de un contrato, conteniendo su vejez en una cinta de video.

We can notice the influence of Oscar Wilde's "The Portrait of Dorian Gray", when Winslow finds the tape where Swan tried to commit suicide because he was getting old and could not stand it, there the devil appears to him with his own figure in the mirror, occurring the blood pact through a contract, containing his old age in a videotape.

Paul Willians fue compositor de “The Carpenters”, de allí que se escuchen baladas de este tipo en la película.

A pesar de que la película resultó un fracaso de taquilla en la ciudad canadiense de Winnipeg, logra mantenerse 18 semanas en cartelera, ya que se hizo de fanáticos que la veían hasta cuatro veces. Desde allí, cada cierto tiempo vuelve a exhibirse en un cine de Winnipeg, donde además se han celebrado eventos relacionados con la película denominados Phantompalooza.

La leyenda de Fausto predomina en todo el contexto de la película, siendo el hilo conductor la firma con sangre de un contrato, Winslow quiere acabar su cantata para que Fenix la interprete a toda costa, Fénix quiere ser famosa y sucumbe ante Swan al ver que está cerca de alcanzar el sueño del éxito. Swan es la encarnación del mal en persona, un hombre ambicioso que además de querer la eterna juventud, maneja poder y fama, viviendo para satisfacer su ego y disfrutar de los placeres mundanos. Todos se manejan bajo ideales egoístas. La cantata además se titula Fausto. La fascinación del fantasma hacia Fénix nos hace recordar al clásico de Gaston Leroux El Fantasma de la Opera.

The Faust legend predominates in the whole context of the film, being the common thread the signing of a contract with blood, Winslow wants to finish his cantata so that Phoenix interprets it at all costs, Phoenix wants to be famous and succumbs to Swan seeing that he is close to achieving the dream of success. Swan is the incarnation of evil in person, an ambitious man who in addition to wanting eternal youth, wields power and fame, living to satisfy his ego and enjoy worldly pleasures. All are driven by selfish ideals. The cantata is also entitled Faust. The phantom's fascination with Phoenix is reminiscent of Gaston Leroux's classic The Phantom of the Opera.

La película es una sátira al mundo del espectáculo, del lado feo de la música, en donde el productor busca el éxito, el poder y el dinero robando talento ajeno, y los cantantes y compositores le venden su alma al mismísimo diablo sin medir la consecuencia de sus acciones.

The film is a satire of show business, of the ugly side of music, where the producer seeks success, power and money by stealing other people's talent, and the singers and composers sell their souls to the devil himself without measuring the consequences of their actions.

Las actuaciones en realidad son caricaturescas y extravagantes, como en cualquier buena sátira que se precie. La película es desordenada y a su vez un delirio visual, y musical. Puede que te guste o la odies, no hay términos medios.

The performances are actually cartoonish and extravagant, as in any good satire. The film is messy and at the same time a visual, and musical, delirium. You can either love it or hate it, there is no middle ground.

En lo particular recomiendo su visionado, y como siempre digo, el termino película de culto depende de los ojos con que la mires y hasta del contexto y la época en la que lo hagas.

In particular I recommend its viewing, and as I always say, the term cult film depends on the eyes with which you look at it and even the context and the time in which you do it.
