Hello friends, welcome to my blog, a few days ago I saw this movie called "The Survivor", at first glance I thought it was the story of a boxer because I had not read anything about it, it was broadcast on HBOMAX, it is based on the book by same name written by the son of the protagonist Alan Scott Haft, who at the request of his father asked him to tell his story. The film was released on Holocaust Remembrance Day as a way to honor all the victims murdered by the Nazis. Directed by Barry Levinson (Rain Man) and written by Justine Juel Gillmer (The100), it shows us the experience that it was for Harry Haft (Ben Foster), surviving the extermination camps of Auschwitz, in Poland.
In this tape I was impressed with the transformation of Ben Foster, he is unrecognizable, his transition in the flashbacks of his life in the United States when he arrives as an immigrant to his memories in the concentration camp are impressive. The psychological trauma of being in a concentration camp and what he had to do to survive is heartbreaking. It makes us wonder what we are willing to do to survive, morally the line of what is correct is not distinguished in this case, playing or condemning is not easy and it would be unfair to do so because you do not know what you are capable of doing being in that situation to survive.
What drives you or gives you hope to get ahead despite the horrors you see and suffer daily, are just some of the thoughts that come to mind. In Harry's case it was staying alive to meet his girlfriend Leah, the girl he was in love with before the war and being taken to the concentration camp, that illusion kept him alive and the belief that somehow she would stay with him. life to meet again. During his survival in the camp, Harry was a slave labor force, strong due to his youth (he was a teenager), in charge of moving the corpses of his companions and moving them. Circumstances caused him to be seen fighting a Nazi soldier to defend himself against him and that changed the course of his life in the camp.
Upon his arrival in the United States, he dedicates himself to the only thing he knows how to do, fight with his fists and although it was not bad, his memories tormented him and his search to find Leah, without knowing if she was still alive, was a constant in his life. . He got to have big fights and in searching for her for the love of her past, he realized that she should live, that she had a second chance and shouldn't waste it. He marries a new love with whom he has 3 children, the oldest is the one who writes his story and many years later he is reunited with her past love. Haft died at the age of 82 in 2007, the Shoah Foundation of the University of Southern California preserves an interview with Harry about his experiences in the concentration camp.
It has a cast of solid actors such as: Dani DeVito, John Leguizamo, Billy Magnussen, Katia Bokor, Paul Bates, Peter Sarsgaard, Vicky Krieps, among others. With characters that complement the different stages of Harry's life; in the concentration camp and his life as a boxer in the United States. This film is not a boxing movie, it is about how a man survived the worst horrors ever seen at that time and his struggle to survive one of the worst concentration camps, Auschwitz. It does not teach the human capacity to survive and get ahead but also the deep traumas that those horrors reveal and that haunt him throughout his life. They show us that even after experiencing such traumas you can be happy and leave a legacy (his children of him). I recommend you watch it, it's a great movie.
