It’s officially October, the month of terror, and anything can happen when darkness makes its appearance. This review is dedicated to the Halloween contest organized by @wiseagent. This is the second week, so I recommend taking part in this opportunity because the theme is: “serial killers.” Those horror-movie antagonists who struck fear with their mere presence.

Among the various psychopaths, genocidal maniacs, and nightmare creatures, we have a legend who became world-famous for being a demonic doll. I’m referring to the one and only Chucky. This film series frightened me when I was a child because, thanks to Toy Story, I believed that toys came to life behind my back. I was afraid that a toy I mistreated would take revenge on me at night. Meeting Chucky terrified me as a young child, but now that I’m an adult, I see that what frightened me was a classic slasher—and yes, Chucky meets all the characteristics of a serial killer. Even before becoming a doll, he was a murderer being hunted by the police.

During the golden age of slasher cinema, well-known figures such as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger were the characters whose fame shone brightest on Halloween night. Those men were truly frightening because of how intimidating they were, but... what would happen if the embodiment of terror weren’t two meters tall or wearing a terrifying mask, but barely half a meter tall and made of plastic? Although he may sound harmless, Chucky is a little demon.

Directed by Tom Holland and written by screenwriter Don Mancini, "Child’s Play" (1988) proved that suspense can literally come in small packages. The film became a cult classic that explored the idea of a living doll long before the release of "Toy Story", but its approach is disturbing and worthy of a horror film.

The story begins with a chase through the streets of Chicago at night. Serial strangler Charles Lee Ray is cornered by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) inside a toy store. After being fatally wounded, Charles Lee Ray turns to a voodoo ritual to transfer his soul into a children’s doll from the "Good Guy" line. By coincidence, that same toy ends up in the hands of Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks), a single mother looking for a birthday present for her six-year-old son, Andy (Alex Vincent). A young child’s dream becomes a nightmare when the doll comes to life with a thirst for blood.

Child’s Play is better known as Chucky in my country for the simple reason that the character receives all the attention. Charles Lee Ray was a monster even before transferring part of his soul into a doll. After becoming Chucky, despite his diminutive size, he uses his ingenuity to commit all kinds of atrocities. He manipulates young Andy in order to take revenge on the accomplice who abandoned him, making her his main target as he tries to become human again.

Horror films from the 1980s had a very similar way of handling suspense during their first act, when the antagonist is introduced. Tom Holland does not rush Chucky’s reveal as a possessed doll; instead, he uses the audience’s psychology. It is no coincidence that Chucky and Andy wear the same outfit.

From the opening pages of the screenplay, the film plays with ambiguity to raise a question: Does the doll really come to life, or is it all the result of a troubled child’s trauma? This initial doubt is eventually resolved, but I applaud the layer of dramatic tension created by showing a mother caught between disbelief and the desperate need to protect her son at all costs.

The mother’s discovery scene is the best part, when Karen realizes that the doll has been operating without batteries and confronts it directly, only to be attacked. At that moment, the film’s mystery comes to an end, and from then on it plunges into the classic pursuit thriller of a slasher.

The production required a great deal of work behind the scenes. They spared no expense on practical effects, and what they achieved seems much better to me than most of what we see in the digital era. The combination of animatronics, puppets operated by multiple puppeteers, and the use of doubles allowed this first version of Chucky to look like a truly convincing living doll. Brad Dourif played Charles Lee Ray during the introduction, then voiced the character once he became a doll. His performance is characterized by dark, vulgar, and sadistic humor that contrasts with the doll’s innocent appearance.

The performances are very well done. At such a young age, Alex Vincent delivered a natural and genuinely tender performance. Catherine Hicks, meanwhile, plays Andy’s mother, and I find her maternal attitude convincing for a single woman of that era. I have not said much about Chris Sarandon, the realistic detective forced to accept an absurd reality, but that is because his role serves primarily as supporting material.

Although its sequels gradually steered the franchise toward black comedy, the original Child’s Play from 1988 remains a classic of horror cinema that still holds up today. It transformed the concept of an innocent children’s toy into one of popular culture’s worst nightmares.

Chucky really scared me when I was younger.😂 The idea of a small toy coming to life and trying to kill people is scary in its own way.

This is definitely a great classic, at least in the horror thriller genre, and it stands out quite a bit for its unique blend of supernatural elements with dark humor and suspense. The character of Chucky managed to become an emblematic antagonist, not only as a serial killer, but also as an entity and icon of terror. The best part is the absurdity of the character, who, being just a doll, causes so much chaos. But hey, this is what came to revive and further elevate the slasher subgenre.

    Good review.
