The “Paranormal Activity” saga seemed to have reached a dead end with its fourth installment. However, in 2014, the fifth film, titled "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones", was released. The previous film featured a post-credits scene hinting at a spin-off set in Mexico, but it ultimately turned out to be set in California. The events of the film take place chronologically one year after those seen in the fourth installment. In other words, it is an official sequel.
I mention this because many people confuse the saga’s titles, since the films stopped being numbered after the fourth installment. This film has different protagonists and characters who are connected to the coven of witches seen in several of the movies, and that is because the paranormal case involving Katie’s family is apparently not an isolated one. (We will explore this topic in greater depth later.)
The story now closely follows Jesse, a recently graduated high-school student who spends his summer days documenting his antics with a video camera alongside his best friend, Héctor. His ordinary life takes a turn when his neighbor, a mysterious woman whom the neighborhood considers a witch, is murdered by a boy from his school.
Curiosity leads them to break into and investigate the deceased woman’s apartment, where Jesse comes into contact with strange objects belonging to a witches’ coven. Soon afterward, Jesse begins to experience physical and psychological changes, developing astonishing abilities that initially seem like superpowers but quickly become dark and dangerous, forcing his loved ones to seek answers before an evil entity possesses his body.
Unlike the previous installments, the director’s chair was taken by Christopher Landon, one of the saga’s screenwriters. He managed to revive interest in the franchise by making a few minor adjustments to the narrative. That said, it is worth mentioning that although the film is classified as a horror and thriller movie, I did not find it entirely consistent with either genre.
Unlike the earlier installments, which relied on the perspectives provided by the iconic security cameras, Landon chose to use the classic found-footage style seen in “The Blair Witch Project”—that is, handheld camera work throughout.
The pacing is noticeably more dynamic, since there are no long, silent “Night 1” sequences in which nothing happened for most of the nighttime footage. Here, the scares are more circumstantial and immediate.
At first, the film presents itself as a supernatural horror story, but at one point it turns into a typical teen movie about a boy who acquires superpowers—something very similar to "Chronicle"—before returning to its horror aesthetic near the end. As a result, the film’s genre feels somewhat inconsistent.
What is interesting is the narrative, since the Paranormal Activity saga has always contained plot holes that had not yet been explored. If you have seen the second film, you will know that Kristi’s family installed security cameras because their house had been burglarized and several boxes of VHS tapes were stolen. At last, it is revealed that those tapes came from that very box and that the witches’ coven was responsible for the theft—presumably to prevent their secrets from coming to light.
We also see the return and involvement of characters from the saga, such as Ali Rey, Kristi’s stepdaughter, and Katie herself. (It is not my intention to spoil anything, so I will leave it at that.)
It is incredible to see how the direction of a screenwriter can give some meaning to a story that seemed to have nowhere else to go. His approach focuses on developing what had previously been left open to interpretation. For example, I used to think that the witches’ coven’s main mission revolved around Katie and Kristi’s family, but that is not the case. It turns out that the story told so far is only one of many taking place simultaneously around the world. Apparently, the witches have far more complex sinister intentions, and their numbers are countless.
Hunter and Jesse are merely the first male children born into their families in many generations, but over the years there have been several cases similar to theirs. Children who are marked before birth are human sacrifices to demonic entities.
Up to this point, the lore of Paranormal Activity had revolved almost exclusively around the generational curse afflicting sisters Katie and Kristi, who were haunted by the demon “Toby” because of a demonic pact made by their grandmother. However, this film dramatically broadens the scope, showing us a terrifying truth: the reach of "the Midwives” coven is global and highly organized.
This group of witches selects pregnant women in different communities to “mark” their firstborn sons, preparing them before birth to become the physical vessels of a demonic entity. This installment transformed my view of the franchise. It went from being a paranormal story to a large-scale supernatural conspiracy, which is promising, even though it moves far away from what the saga originally was.
I suppose that tying up the loose ends left by the previous sequels—especially Paranormal Activity 4—required a revision that made everything we had seen appear to be merely a subplot in a much larger story. This film acts as the glue holding the timeline together. It explains the physical and mental process the “marked” undergo when possessed by a demon.
I liked that things were not overexplained. Questions such as why the demon is fixated on male children, how the witches operate in the shadows to ensure that the possession takes place, and what ultimately becomes of them are mysteries that should remain mysteries in order to intrigue and disturb the viewer.
That said, there is one thing that I think should be discussed regardless of whether it can be considered a spoiler: the addition of a certain science-fiction element—the door that allows time travel.
Yes, this film does not merely feature ghostly presences. The concept of spatial-temporal “doors” used by the coven is mentioned at the beginning and appears again during the final stretch. They are literally portals, described as “unholy places,” that allow the witches to move not only between different physical locations but also through time. This is very… I cannot even think of an appropriate synonym for something so inconsistent.
There is a major difference between dealing with supernatural elements and dealing with science fiction. It is like mixing water and oil while the oil is boiling—it is disastrous to watch. I do not like seeing an element like this introduced without proper care, since any writer knows how complicated a plot becomes once time travel is involved.
I consider “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” to be the installment with the most entertaining narrative in the entire saga precisely because it differs from its predecessors. Perhaps, at this point, expanding the franchise’s universe may seem like a desperate attempt to attract attention. Still, it succeeded in reviving interest when the series already appeared to have nowhere else to go.

La saga de "Paranormal Activity" parecía haber llegado a un punto muerto en la cuarta entrega, sin embargo, en el 2014 se estreno la quinta entrega titulada: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Y es que en la película anterior hay una escena post-créditos que apuntaba a un Spin off ambientado en México, pero resulto ambientarse en California. Y los acontecimientos de la cinta suceden cronológicamente un año después de los eventos vistos en la cuarta entrega. Es decir que es una secuela oficial.
Lo mencionó porque hay muchas personas que confunden los títulos de la saga, ya que se dejaron de enumerar después de la cuarta entrega. Está cinta tiene otros protagonistas y personajes que están relacionados con el aquelarre de brujas vistos en varias películas, y eso se debe a que aparentemente el caso paranormal de la familia de Katie no es un caso aislado. (Desarrollaremos este tema en profundidad más adelante)
Ahora la historia sigue de cerca a Jesse, un adolescente recién graduado de la secundaria, junto a su mejor amigo Héctor, pasa sus días de verano documentando sus travesuras a través de una cámara de video. Su vida normal da un giro cuando su vecina, una misteriosa mujer a la que el barrio tilda de bruja, es asesinada por un chico de su escuela.
La curiosidad los lleva a colarse e investigar el apartamento de la difunta, en donde Jesse entra en contacto con objetos extraños pertenecientes a un aquelarre de brujas. Poco después, Jesse comienza a experimentar cambios físicos y psicológicos, desarrollando habilidades asombrosas que inicialmente parecen superpoderes, pero rápidamente se tornan oscuras y peligrosas, obligando a sus seres queridos a buscar respuestas antes de que una entidad maligna posea su cuerpo.
A diferencia de entregas pasadas, el cargo de director fue tomado por Christopher Landon, un guionista de la saga, y logro revivir el interés por la franquicia al hacer pequeños arreglos a la narrativa, eso sí, cabe mencionar que aunque este clasificada como película de terror y suspenso, no me pareció del todo tal cosa.
A diferencia de las entregas anteriores, que dependían de las perspectivas de las icónicas cámaras de seguridad, Landon opto por usar el clásico estilo del Found Footage visto en "The Blair Witch Project"; es decir, cámara en mano en todo momento.
El ritmo es notablemente más dinámico, ya que no hay esas largas y silenciosas secuencias de "Noche 1" en dónde no pasaba nada la mayor parte del plano nocturno, aquí los sustos son más circunstanciales y más inmediato.
Al inicio, la película se muestra como una historia de terror sobrenatural, pero en un momento dado se convierte en una típica película adolescente de un chico que adquiere superpoderes (Algo muy parecido a la cinta "Chronicle"), pero casi al final se vuelve a retomar la estética de terror. Por lo que el género de la película es algo inconsistente.
Lo interesante está en la narrativa, ya que la historia general de la saga de Actividad paranormal ha contado con huecos argumentales que hasta ahora no se habían explotado: Si te viste la segunda película, sabrás que la razón por la que la familia de Kristi instaló cámaras de seguridad fue porque ocurrió un robo en su casa en el cual se llevaron unas cajas con cintas VHS, pues al fin se revela que fue de esa caja de cintas y que las responsables del robo fue el aquelarre de brujas (Seguramente para que sus secretos no salieran a la luz)
También tenemos el regreso y la participación de personajes de la saga como Ali Rey, la hijastra de Kristi, y la mismísima Katie (Pero no es mi intención hacer Spoilers, así lo dejaré hasta ahí)
Es increíble ver como la dirección de un guionista puede darle cierto sentido a una historia que parecía no dar para más. Su enfoque radica en desarrollar lo que se dejaba a libre interpretación; por ejemplo, antes pensaba que la misión principal del aquelarre de brujas giraba entorno a la familia de Katie y Kristi, pero no es así. Resulta que la historia que se ha contado hasta ahora solo es una de muchas que ocurren simultáneamente en todo el mundo. Al parecer las brujas tienen intenciones siniestras mucho más complejas y sus números son incontables.
Hunter y Jesse son solo los primeros varones de sus familias en muchas generaciones, pero a lo largo de los años han existido varios casos similares a los suyos: Los niños que son marcados antes de nacer son sacrificios humanos para las entidades demoníacas.
Hasta este punto, el lore de Paranormal Activity giraba casi exclusivamente en torno a la maldición generacional de las hermanas Katie y Kristi, acosadas por el demonio "Toby" debido a un pacto demoníaco hecho por su abuela. Sin embargo, la cinta abre el espectro dramáticamente para mostrarnos una verdad aterradora, y es que... El alcance del aquelarre de "The Midwives" es global y está altamente organizado.
Este grupo de brujas selecciona a mujeres embarazadas en diferentes comunidades para "marcar" a los varones primogénitos, preparándolos desde antes de nacer para ser los recipientes físicos de una entidad demoníaca. Esta entrega transformo mi visión sobre la franquicia, paso de ser una historia paranormal a una conspiración sobrenatural gran escala, lo cual es prometedor a pesar de que se aleja mucho de lo que era la saga en un principio.
Supongo que atar los cabos sueltos que las secuelas anteriores (especialmente Paranormal Activity 4) habían dejado requirió una corrección que hiciera parecer todo lo visto como una simple subtrama de una historia mucho más grande. Esta película actúa como el pegamento de la línea temporal. Explica el proceso físico y mental por el que atraviesan los "marcados" al ser poseídos por un demonio.
Me gusto que las cosas no fueran explicadas de más: cosas como el porqué de la fijación del demonio con los niños varones y cómo operan las brujas en las sombras para asegurar que la posesión se concrete o el fin de esas son misterios que deben permanecer como misterios para intrigar y perturbar al espectador.
Eso sí, hay algo que creo que debe ser comentado independientemente de si pueda ser considerado como spoiler, y es el agregado de cierto elemento de ciencia ficción: La puerta que te permite viajar por el tiempo.
Si, aquí no solo se experimentan presencias fantasmales; hay una mención al inicio de la cinta y en el tramo final, el concepto de "puertas" espacio-temporales utilizadas por el aquelarre se hace presente. Son literalmente portales, descritos como "lugares impíos", permiten a las brujas moverse no solo entre diferentes ubicaciones físicas, sino también a través del tiempo. Lo cual es algo muy... Ni siquiera se me ocurre un sinónimo adecuado para algo tan inconsistente.
Hay mucha diferencia al tratar cosas sobrenaturales y al tratar ciencia ficción, es como mezclar agua y aceite cuando el aceite está hirviendo, es algo desastroso de ver. No es de mi agrado ver qué se introduzca un elemento como este sin cuidado; ya que cualquier escritor sabe lo complicado que se vuelve una trama cuando se involucra con viajes en el tiempo.
Considero que "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" es la entrega con la narrativa más entretenida de toda la saga por ser diferente a sus predecesoras. Tal vez a estas alturas, expandir el universo de la franquicia puede parecer un grito desesperado por llamar la atención, ciertamente tuvo éxito, revivió el interés cuando ya parecía no dar para más.
