Cuando me enteré sobre la realización de esta serie, la cual está basada en la saga de novelas escritas por Isaac Asimov, que es reconocida como una de las mejores en la historia del género de la Ciencia Ficción, yo me emocioné bastante, ya que estas novelas son mis favoritas y las que me han hecho adentrarme un poco en la lectura, pues, aunque no soy un asiduo lector, luego de haber descubierto las obras de Asimov, he estado explorando otros autores clásicos de género, de hecho, hasta me he motivado a escribir algo. El caso es que esta es la primera vez en la que veo una adaptación televisiva o cinematográfica de una obra literaria, habiendo leído antes él o en este caso los libros (aunque no he leído todos los textos) en que está basada la historia, de modo que para mí esta producción suscita un interés particular.
Los libros
La saga de novelas de la Fundación es considerablemente extensa, ya que, consta de al menos 7 libros, los cuales se ambientan en el mismo universo literario que otras obras de Asimov, de modo que esas otras historias pueden también entenderse como complementos de esta saga. Inicialmente comprendió solo tres novelas a las que se conoce como la Trilogía de la Fundación o Ciclo de Trántor, cuyos títulos son “Fundación”, “Fundación e Imperio” y “Segunda Fundación”, las cuales se publicaron en 1951, 1952 y 1953 respectivamente. De hecho, en primera instancia se trató de una serie de cuentos o relatos que se publicaron en una revista de ciencia ficción entre 1942 y 1950, luego se recopilaron 8 cuentos y se agregó otro nuevo, para publicarlos en formato de novelas, distribuidos en los tres tomos ya mencionados.
Tras el gran éxito alcanzado por la trilogía inicial, que llego incluso a ser galardonada con un premio Hugo (el equivalente al Oscar o el Grammy en lo que respecta a este tipo de literatura) en una categoría especial a la mejor serie de todos los tiempos en el género de la ciencia ficción, la saga continuó expandiéndose. Primero llegaron dos secuelas, “Los límites de la Fundación” publicada en 1982 y “Fundación y Tierra" en 1986, para más tarde agregar dos precuelas, “Preludio a la Fundación” en 1988 y finalmente “Hacia la Fundación” que fue publicada en 1993, un año después de la muerte del autor.

The fact is that this is the first time I have seen a television or film adaptation of a literary work, having read before him or in this case the books (although I have not read all the texts) on which the story is based, of So for me this production arouses a particular interest.
The books
The Foundation's saga of novels is considerably extensive, since it consists of at least 7 books, which are set in the same literary universe as other works by Asimov, so that these other stories can also be understood as complements to this saga. . La historia tiene como premisa la invención por parte de un matemático conocido como Hari Seldon, de una ciencia a la que él le dio el nombre de Psicohistoria, la cual es capaz de predecir por medio de cálculos estadísticos y con gran precisión los acontecimientos futuros que se producirán en la sociedad, siempre y cuando el universo de ciudadanos que la constituya, corresponda a un número extremadamente grande de individuos. Este es el caso del imperio galáctico al que hace mención la trama, pues su narración se ambienta en un futuro muy distante a la época actual, en el cual la humanidad a poblado toda la galaxia y una basta cantidad de planetas es gobernada por un emperador que ejerce su poder desde un planeta capital llamado Trántor.
Mediante la psicohistoria, Seldon predice la inevitable caída del imperio y luego de ello, un largo periodo de barbarie en toda la galaxia, como consecuencia del vacío de poder que se generaría si no se toman medidas para atenuarlo, permitiendo que sea ocupado parcialmente por diferentes fracciones que se enfrentarían en violentas guerras durante milenios. Para evitar eso y reducir el periodo post imperial a su mínima expresión, este destacado matemático desarrolla un plan que tiene como primera etapa la creación de la llamada Fundación, una selección de científicos y expertos que serán trasladados a un planeta deshabitado y desde allí desarrollarán una enciclopedia en la que se almacenara la mayor parte del conocimiento generado por la civilización humana en toda su existencia.
Argument

This is the case of the galactic empire that the plot makes mention of, since its narrative is set in a future very distant from the present time, in which humanity has populated the entire galaxy and a large number of planets are ruled by an emperor. who exercises his power from a capital planet called Trantor.
Through psychohistory, Seldon predicts the inevitable fall of the empire and after that, a long period of barbarism throughout the galaxy, as a consequence of the power vacuum that would be generated if measures are not taken to mitigate it, allowing it to be partially occupied by different fractions that would face violent wars for millennia. To avoid that and reduce the post-imperial period to its minimum expression, this outstanding mathematician develops a plan whose first stage is the creation of the so-called Foundation, a selection of scientists and experts who will be transferred to an uninhabited planet and from there they will develop a encyclopedia in which most of the knowledge generated by human civilization throughout its existence will be stored.

Durante años ha estado rondando en el ambiente hollywoodense la idea de adaptar esta saga literaria al ámbito cinematográfico o televisivo, sin embargo, siempre había sido descartado el proyecto debido a que esta historia presenta características que la hace muy compleja de adaptar a la pantalla, pues no se trata de la narración de las vivencias o aventuras de un limitado grupo de personajes durante su propia existencia, sino que es una historia que transcurre durante varias generaciones y no se centra en personajes, sino en eventos políticos de una escala extraordinaria.
Es necesario tomar en cuenta esta enorme dificultad de adaptación que presenta la historia original, al momento de evaluar la serie de televisión que ha producido la plataforma de streaming Apple TV+, ya que por tal motivo, esta no se apega demasiado al material impreso, sino que intenta extraer su esencia e impregnarla en una nueva trama que si sea acorde a los parámetros televisivos y a los estándares actuales del entretenimiento audiovisual. Por lo que lógicamente se hace mayor énfasis en las historias personales, las escenas de acción y los sentimientos humanos. Son tales las diferencias que existen entre ambas narrativas, que hay quienes afirman que no se trata de una adaptación como tal del texto a la pantalla, sino que esta es una nueva obra levemente basada en el contenido literario escrito por Asimov, sin embargo, en mi opinión personal, si la considero una adaptación, pero que por su puesto se toma grandes libertades creativas para así intentar conseguir cautivar al público moderno, tanto el que ha leído la obra original como el que no la conoce.

A continuación, voy a mencionar algunos elementos importantes de la trama de la serie, que pueden constituir spoilers, de modo que, si aún no has visto esta producción y no quieres arruinar en lo más mínimo cualquier sorpresa, entonces puedes abandonar la lectura de este articulo a partir de acá. No obstante, a mi parecer las cosas que voy a comentar son detalles de la forma en la que se reorganizan los personajes y pertenecen a las bases de la narración que se muestran en los primeros episodios, de modo que no se trata de destripar los giros argumentales de la trama, no es la intensión de este artículo desvelar ningún acontecimiento importante, solo exponer las características principales de este producto audiovisual.

It is necessary to take into account this enormous adaptation difficulty presented by the original story, when evaluating the television series produced by the Apple TV + streaming platform, since for this reason, it is not too attached to printed material, but that tries to extract its essence and impregnate it in a new plot that is in accordance with television parameters and current audiovisual entertainment standards. So logically more emphasis is placed on personal stories, action scenes and human feelings. Such are the differences that exist between both narratives, that there are those who affirm that it is not an adaptation as such of the text to the screen, but that this is a new work slightly based on the literary content written by Asimov, however, in My personal opinion, if I consider it an adaptation, but of course it takes great creative liberties in order to try to captivate the modern public, both those who have read the original work and those who do not know it.

Next, I am going to mention some important elements of the plot of the series, which can constitute spoilers, so if you have not seen this production yet and do not want to ruin any surprise in the least, then you can abandon reading this article from here. However, in my opinion, the things that I am going to comment on are details of the way in which the characters are reorganized and belong to the bases of the narration that are shown in the first episodes, so it is not about gutting the twists argumentative of the plot, it is not the intention of this article to reveal any important event, only to expose the main characteristics of this audiovisual product.
Dicho esto, lo que más evidente resulta para cualquiera que haya leído los libros es que varios personajes que en las novelas son hombres, en la serie son mujeres y que la variedad étnica de las mismas es notoria, me refiero concretamente a los personajes Demerzel, Gaal Dormick y Salvor Hardin. Esto es algo que a algunos de los fanáticos de la saga literaria les molesta bastante, pero en mi caso me parece normal, no me molesta en lo más mínimo que modifiquen los géneros y menos aún las razas de estos personajes, ya que me parece algo que no tiene mayor relevancia en la esencia de la historia y que de no haberlo hecho así, sería un aspecto que iría en contra de la corriente actual de la llamada corrección política.
Mi postura con respecto a esa tendencia puede en algunos casos ser adversa, pues a veces los cambios me parecen forzados, como ocurre con las versiones afro que han planteado realizar en Disney de la Sirenita y Hércules, pero en casos como este en el que la raza o el sexo del personaje no tienen mayor trascendencia, me resulta positivo que se inviertan en pro de la diversidad y el realismo. No creo que cambiar algunos aspectos de un personaje, sea per se una especie de herejía o sacrilegio hacia el legado de un autor como Asimov, por supuesto siempre que esos cambios contribuyan a actualización de la obra y no arruinen su esencia en términos generales.
Dejando de lado lo que se refiere a los cambios de género y raza en los personajes, la historia que cuenta la serie se distancia bastante de lo que conocemos quienes leímos los libros, ya que por ejemplo existen personajes que comparten el mismo espacio y tiempo, llegando incluso a mantener una relación sentimental de gran importancia para la trama, cuando en los textos nunca coincidieron debido a que, cuando uno hace presencia en la narración ya el otro había muerto. Igual que en el caso anterior creo que una adaptación no necesariamente deba ser una representación exacta en formato visual del material literario, por lo que las discrepancias por si solas no me molestan.
Sin embargo, creo que está adaptación tiene algunos problemas en cuanto a generar emoción e intriga, lo que la hace quedarse algo por debajo de las expectativas, aunque también tiene elementos que me parece le añaden bastante al relato. La narración se divide en dos subtramas principales, una tiene que ver con las personas que constituyen la fundación y la otra con la dinastía imperial que rige la galaxia. Desde mi punto de vista, la parte más floja es la primera, que es la que debería tener mayor enganche emocional, pues es en ella que se encuentran los personajes protagonistas de la historia, como lo son Gaal Dormick, Salvor Hardin y el mismo Hari Seldon.

My position regarding this trend may in some cases be adverse, since sometimes the changes seem forced to me, as with the Afro versions of the Little Mermaid and Hercules that have been proposed in Disney, but in cases like this in which the Race or gender of the character is not important, I find it positive that they are invested in favor of diversity and realism. I do not think that changing some aspects of a character, is per se a kind of heresy or sacrilege towards the legacy of an author like Asimov, of course as long as those changes contribute to updating the work and do not ruin its essence in general terms.
Leaving aside what refers to the gender and race changes in the characters, the story that the series tells is quite a distance from what those of us who read the books know, since for example there are characters who share the same space and time, even going so far as to maintain a sentimental relationship of great importance for the plot, when in the texts they never coincided because, when one is present in the narrative, the other had already died. As in the previous case, I believe that an adaptation does not necessarily have to be an exact representation in visual format of the literary material, so the discrepancies alone do not bother me.
However, I think that this adaptation has some problems in terms of generating emotion and intrigue, which makes it stay somewhat below expectations, although it also has elements that I think add a lot to the story, the narration is divided into two subplots The main ones, one has to do with the people who make up the foundation and the other with the imperial dynasty that rules the galaxy. From my point of view, the weakest part is the first, which is the one that should have the greatest emotional attachment, since it is in it that the main characters of the story are found, such as Gaal Dormick, Salvor Hardin and Hari himself. Seldon.
De hecho, el mayor peso narrativo se encuentra en esta parte de la historia, las escenas de acción transcurren principalmente allí y los personajes con los sentimientos más nobles pertenecen a este arco, pero, aunque esta trama intenta ser atractiva e intensa, me parece que no logra causar un interés solido en la audiencia, al menos así me ocurre a mí, a decir verdad, de esa subtrama con lo que más he podido conectar es con lo mostrado en el capítulo final de esta primera temporada, ya que se dan unos eventos que me gusta como hacen evolucionar la historia, pero en términos generales esta trama no presenta situaciones que resulten novedosas y eso la hace un tanto aburrida, aunque tampoco estoy diciendo con esto que sea terrible.
Por otra parte, la trama que se relaciona con el emperador, tiene un giro de tuercas con relación a los libros que me parece le suma bastante a la historia, ya que, en este caso a diferencia de los textos, el emperador no es un ser humano común y corriente, sino que desde hace ya varias generaciones, vienen gobernando diferentes clones del emperador Cleon original, la dinastía se compone de tres clones de diferentes edades, uno joven (Hermano Alba) que aprende de sus dos hermanos mayores, uno de mediana edad (Hermano Dia) que es quien realmente ejerce el poder y uno de avanzada edad (Hermano Ocaso) que sirve de consejero al emperador central.
Aunque esta trama muestra poca acción y se centra lógicamente en la política imperial y el ejercicio del poder, personalmente se me hace más interesante que la otra subtrama, ya que muestra algunos elementos novedosos que le conceden cierto grado de profundidad filosófica, aunque se podría decir que es relativamente lineal y simple. Si bien esta parte de la historia muestra a los personajes que se podrían considerar como villanos, los conflictos que en ella se presentan me parece más llamativos que los mostrados por los personajes principales durante la mayoría de los capítulos, a excepción del último episodio.
Un detalle de carácter más general que puede afectar a la calidad de la serie y que si corresponde directamente a la discrepancia con lo que encontramos en los libros, es que en un momento se menciona que en el pasado una guerra entre humanos y maquinas, lo cual choca rotundamente con la filosofía que siguen las novelas de Asimov, pues en ellas siempre los robots se apegan a las llamas leyes de la robótica, las cuales les impiden hacer daño a los humanos, esto mismo puede estar en conflicto con los actos realizados por el personaje de Demerzel, en los que se le ve acecinando a seres humanos, ese sí que es un cambio que va en contra del sentido de la obra original y parece ser una obsesión de Hollywood por enfrentar a hombres y robots, así como lo hicieron con “Yo, Robot” que también es obra de Asimov.

On the other hand, the plot that is related to the emperor has a twist in relation to the books that I think adds a lot to the story, since, in this case, unlike the texts, the emperor is not a An ordinary human being, but for several generations now, different clones of the original Emperor Cleon have been ruling, the dynasty is made up of three clones of different ages, one young (Brothe Sunrise) who learns from his two older brothers, one of middle-aged (Brother Day) who is the one who really wields power and one of advanced age (Brother Sunset) who serves as an advisor to the central emperor.
Although this plot shows little action and logically focuses on imperial politics and the exercise of power, personally I find it more interesting than the other subplot, since it shows some novel elements that give it a certain degree of philosophical depth, although it could be said which is relatively linear and simple. Although this part of the story shows the characters that could be considered as villains, the conflicts that are presented in it seem more striking than those shown by the main characters during most of the chapters, with the exception of the last episode.
A more general detail that can affect the quality of the series and that if it corresponds directly to the discrepancy with what we find in the books, is that at one point it is mentioned that in the past a war between humans and machines, it Which strongly clashes with the philosophy that Asimov's novels follow, since in them robots always adhere to the so-called laws of robotics, which prevent them from doing harm to humans, this may be in conflict with the acts performed by Demerzel's character, in which he is seen killing human beings, that is a change that goes against the meaning of the original work and seems to be a Hollywood obsession to confront men and robots, just as they did with "Yo, Robot" which is also the work of Asimov.
En lo que corresponde a las actuaciones y el apartado visual, incluidos vestuarios y escenografía, se nota que es una serie que puede presumir de un elevado presupuesto, los acabados en general tienen una calidad de nivel cinematográfico y eso mejora bastante la experiencia de verla, de modo que, aunque no podría calificarla como una de las mejores series de la actualidad en cuanto a su grado de entretenimiento, sí que puedo recomendarla a cualquier amante de la ciencia ficción que busque espectacularidad visual y una historia con aspectos positivos y otros que no lo son tanto.
Para concluir, debe mencionar que he leído reseñas en las que se hacen comentarios como que es un terrible error que Demerzel no tenga mayor peso en la historia o que no se mencione (en los primeros capítulos) a la segunda fundación, pero es necesario esperar a que la trama avance para poder criticar este tipo de cosas ya que la primera temporada es solo una pequeña parte de una historia que puede ser bastante larga, a no ser que termine siendo cancelada la seria por no tener la resección esperada, pero por ahora, ya ha sido renovada para una segunda temporada y es posible que la emisión se incremente conforme vaya avanzando la narración y se corrijan errores.
