Se que ya se ha dicho bastante sobre lo buena o mala que es la película Eternals e incluso entiendo que quizá no sea lo más oportuno abordar esta polémica ahora, cuando ya ha pasado su momento y están en el foco público otros proyectos del UCM, pero tomando en cuenta que en estos días eh estado asumiendo el tema Marvel con mayor peso dentro de mi contenido, creo que puede ser tiempo de publicar mi punto de vista sobre este largometraje, desde la perspectiva de alguien que evalúa la calidad de esta cinta como una pieza dentro de un rompecabezas (puzle), que muestra una figura mayor a la que ella por si sola puede representar. De antemano debo aclarar que no pretendo justificar ciegamente lo negativo que pueda tener esta película, ni tampoco decir que quienes tengan una mala opinión de ella, sea debido a tener insuficiente fanatismo por la franquicia como para llegar a apreciarla, pues cada opinión es válida, yo solo vengo a explicar la mía.
Es bien sabido, que este largometraje fue destruido por la crítica especializada desde antes de su estreno en cines, ya que muchos de los críticos que la vieron en las funciones previas, le otorgaron muy malas calificaciones. Esto fue bastante sorprendente, ya que tratándose de Marvel y de una super producción en la que participaron estrellas como Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani... y además ese gran reparto estaba dirigido por la cineasta china ganadora del Oscar, Chloé Zhao, el éxito estaba virtualmente asegurado. Sin embargo, también es posible que todo eso haya jugado un poco en su contra, pues seguramente algunos esperaban una historia con personajes carismáticos y con personalidades muy bien desarrolladas, donde los actores pudieran demostrar sus capacidades histriónicas de gran forma.
I know that enough has already been said about how good or bad the Eternals movie is and I even understand that it may not be the most appropriate thing to address this controversy now, when its time has passed and other MCU projects are in the public spotlight, but Taking into account that these days I have been assuming the Marvel theme with greater weight within my content, I think it may be time to publish my point of view on this feature film, from the perspective of someone who evaluates the quality of this film as a piece within a puzzle (puzzle), which shows a larger figure than it alone can represent. In advance I must clarify that I do not intend to blindly justify the negative that this film may have, nor to say that those who have a bad opinion of it, is due to having insufficient fanaticism for the franchise to appreciate it, because each opinion is valid, I'm just here to explain mine.
It is well known that this feature film was destroyed by specialized critics even before its theatrical release, since many of the critics who saw it in previous screenings gave it very poor ratings. This was quite surprising, since in the case of Marvel and a super production in which stars like Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani participated... and also that great cast was directed by the winning Chinese filmmaker Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, success was virtually assured. However, it is also possible that all this has worked against him a little, since surely some expected a story with charismatic characters and very well-developed personalities, where the actors could demonstrate their histrionic abilities in a great way.
No obstante, creo que se debe recordar que esta es una película que forma parte de un universo extendido y que es la adaptación de una historia proveniente de los comics, por lo tanto, debe mantener la suficiente coherencia narrativa que le permita conservar su compatibilidad con las demás producciones del UCM, así como respetar la esencia del material original de las historietas. Por lo tanto, Eternals tenía la difícil tarea de introducir una decena de personajes super poderosos, de los cuales nunca antes se había realizado ninguna otra producción live action y que tenían que haber existido desde los orígenes de la civilización humana (miles de años atrás), de modo que sería increíblemente complicado poder desarrollar profundamente a cada uno de los roles y a la vez dotar a la película de toda la acción que caracteriza a una historia de superhéroes.
A mi parecer, es totalmente comprensible que la trama se apoye constantemente en flashbacks (escenas retrospectivas), para contar en paralelo a los hechos actuales, una historia que abarca miles de años, la cual no se puede centrar tanto en los personajes en sí, sino en los eventos de forma más general. Por supuesto, las batallas y situaciones que se presenten en esos vistazos al pasado, no generarán gran emoción en el espectador, debido a que siendo hechos anteriores no producen tensión o sensación de peligro sobre los personajes, solo tienen la finalidad de establecer la importancia que han tenido estos en el desarrollo de la humanidad. No me parece razonable, que se le exija a la película cumplir a la vez con tantos aspectos contrapuestos, como tener una narrativa íntima y personal, que la trama esté llena de acción y aventura, que les dé protagonismo a todos sus personajes y que tenga una corta duración; de algo abría que prescindir.
However, I think it should be remembered that this is a movie that is part of an extended universe and that it is the adaptation of a story from the comics, therefore, it must maintain sufficient narrative coherence that allows it to preserve its compatibility with the other MCU productions, as well as respecting the essence of the original material of the comics. Therefore, Eternals had the difficult task of introducing a dozen super powerful characters, of which no other live action production had ever been made before and who had to have existed since the origins of human civilization (thousands of years ago) , so it would be incredibly difficult to be able to deeply develop each of the roles and at the same time give the film all the action that characterizes a superhero story.
In my opinion, it is totally understandable that the plot is constantly based on flashbacks (retrospective scenes), to tell in parallel to the current events, a story that spans thousands of years, which cannot focus so much on the characters themselves, but in events more generally. Of course, the battles and situations that arise in those glimpses into the past will not generate great emotion in the viewer, because being previous events they do not produce tension or a sense of danger on the characters, they only have the purpose of establishing the importance that have had these in the development of humanity. It doesn't seem reasonable to me that the film is required to comply with so many conflicting aspects at the same time, such as having an intimate and personal narrative, that the plot be full of action and adventure, that it give prominence to all its characters and that it has a short duration; something had to be dispensed with.
No se trata de ser conformistas y aceptar como buena una película mediocre, personalmente estoy de acuerdo en que la historia pudo ser mejor. Algunos personajes, en especial el que interpreta Richard Madden, Ikaris, presentan una inexpresividad que los hace fríos, lo cual dificulta el poder empatizar con ellos, aunque no creo que eso allá sido precisamente un error, ni del actor ni tampoco de la dirección, entiendo que esa es la personalidad de un individuo super poderoso que ha vivido durante milenios y que además ni siquiera es humano, todos ellos son casi robots. La propia película nos revela que fueron fabricados de una forma similar a los replicantes de Blade Runner; ellos no nacieron siendo bebés, se les creó con el mismo tamaño y apariencia que tienen luego de miles de años, es decir que no envejecen.
En consecuencia, la construcción de estos personajes busca transmitir las personalidades de seres que cumplan con estas características. Ellos durante toda su existencia han sido simples herramientas de un ser superior, ahora luego de haber podido vivir de forma más o menos normal, su apego y perspectiva en relación a los humanos ha cambiado y llegan al punto de revelarse ante su creador al oponerse al cumplimiento del que fue siempre su último propósito, producir las condiciones necesarias para el surgimiento de un nuevo celestial. La narrativa puede ser algo pesada en comparación con otras obras de Marvel, pero eso es parte de la esencia de esta historia, se requiere de cierto tiempo para establecer toda la trayectoria de los personajes y finalmente en el tercer acto ejecutar el desenlace de la trama de la actualidad, la cual es simple pero correcta en mi opinión.
It is not about being conformist and accepting a mediocre movie as good, I personally agree that the story could have been better. Some characters, especially the one played by Richard Madden, Ikaris, have an inexpressiveness that makes them cold, which makes it difficult to empathize with them, although I don't think that was precisely a mistake there, neither by the actor nor by the direction. I understand that this is the personality of a super powerful individual who has lived for millennia and who is also not even human, they are all almost robots. The film itself reveals that they were manufactured in a similar way to the Blade Runner replicants; they were not born as babies, they were created with the same size and appearance that they have after thousands of years, that is, they do not age.
Consequently, the construction of these characters seeks to convey the personalities of beings that meet these characteristics. They throughout their existence have been simple tools of a superior being, now after being able to live in a more or less normal way, their attachment and perspective in relation to humans has changed and they reach the point of revealing themselves to their creator by opposing the fulfillment of what was always its last purpose, to produce the necessary conditions for the emergence of a new celestial. The narrative can be somewhat heavy compared to other Marvel works, but that is part of the essence of this story, it takes some time to establish the entire trajectory of the characters and finally in the third act to execute the outcome of the plot of today, which is simple but correct in my opinion.
Uno de los elementos más importantes en la historia es el giro en el que se revela que Ikaris fue quien asesinó a Ajak, para muchos esta vuelta de tuerca no tiene mayor impacto debido a que el personaje no es carismático y no sentimos aprecio por él, yo creo que lo importante allí no es la empatía que sintamos hacia él, sino que es el más poderoso del grupo y quien se pudiera esperar que sea el mayor aliado tratándose del que está enamorado de Sersi, que es de todos ellos la más apegada a las personas de la tierra. Otro aspecto que siempre es muy criticado es el villano, refiriéndose al líder de los desviantes, sin embargo, realmente el antagonista acá es Ikaris y también el celestial Arishem, pero más allá de eso, existe un conflicto filosófico, ya que ellos no pueden definirse a la ligera como villanos; su intención es mantener el ciclo cósmico de la vida, tal como lo establece la mitología de la película.
Me resulta paradójico que muchas de las personas que califican a los Eternos como una terrible película, suelen criticar la llamada formula Marvel y la poca sustancia de las tramas que presentan las películas del UCM, pero cuando se asigna a una directora con un estilo como el de Chloé Zhao y se adapta una obra de una magnitud temporal tan colosal, añadiéndole elementos filosóficos a las motivaciones del conflicto principal y algo en que meditar a la audiencia más allá de las escenas de acción y los efectos visuales, entonces se quejan del ritmo pausado y el antagonista poco intimidante. Me atrevo a imaginar, que si la película no tuviera el nombre de Marvel por ningún lado, posiblemente unos cuantos dirían que es una maravilla y la compararían quizá con Blade Runer o Dune (salvando las distancias), que también son películas pesadas de ver y con ritmos lentos, solo que no son de superhéroes.

Another aspect that is always highly criticized is the villain, referring to the leader of the deviants, however, the antagonist here is really Ikaris and also the celestial Arishem, but beyond that, there is a philosophical conflict, since they cannot define themselves. lightly as villains; its intention is to maintain the cosmic cycle of life, as established by the mythology of the film.
I find it paradoxical that many of the people who describe the Eternals as a terrible movie, usually criticize the so-called Marvel formula and the little substance of the plots that the MCU movies present, but when assigned to a director with a style like the by Chloé Zhao and adapts a work of such colossal temporal magnitude, adding philosophical elements to the motivations of the main conflict and something for the audience to meditate on beyond the action scenes and visual effects, then they complain about the slow pace and the unintimidating antagonist. I dare to imagine that if the film did not have the name of Marvel anywhere, possibly a few would say that it is wonderful and would perhaps compare it with Blade Runer or Dune (saving distances), which are also heavy movies to watch and with slow rhythms, only they are not superheroes.
Por otro lado, cualquiera que sin antes haberla visto, lea las más frecuentes críticas negativas que se le hacen a Eternals, puede pensar inmediatamente que esta no tiene escenas de acción o que las pocas que posee son muy pobres y aburridas, pero eso desde mi perspectiva no es así; es claro que no estamos hablando de una película con el grado de acción de Avengers: Infinity War, pero entendiendo que es una película de orígenes, no me queda duda de que las batallas están bastante bien logradas. Respecto a esto, creo que las críticas se enfocan principalmente en la poca originalidad de los poderes que presentan los personajes, de hecho, se critica sobre manera el parecido de Ikaris con Superman, pero es que eso no es culpa de esta película, es algo propio del comic, es un personaje creado para ser equivalente al hombre de acero, incluso la propia cinta le hace referencia a eso; así que no tiene sentido tal crítica, es como quejarse de que Homelander de The Boys sea muy parecido al último hijo de Krypton, aun cuando esta no sea una parodia o deconstrucción del héroe de DC, es obvio que es su pastiche, pero no es algo nuevo, como muestra tenemos los casos de Flash y Quiksilver, Namor y Aquaman, Green Arrow y Hawkeye, Black Panther y Red Lion, Deathstroke y Deadpool...
Antes de finalizar no quiero dejar de plantear mi apreciación en cuanto a la forma en que se adaptó la historia original para hacerla coherente con el UCM, creo que haber cambiado su condición de raza alienígena por la de réplicas artificiales super avanzadas es excelente, el propósito de su estadía en el planeta para proteger la vida inteligente y generar las condiciones para que se desarrolle en el interior de la tierra un celestial, también me parece un giro narrativo muy interesante. Que puede ser algo rebuscado lo de la energía producida por la población inteligente del mundo, sí, pero esto no es ciencia ficción dura, es el mismo universo en que una araña radiactiva le da super poderes a un adolescente, todo está en cuan abierta está la mente del espectador a asimilar este tipo de conceptos fantasiosos. A mí al igual que a otros, me pareció muy vaga la justificación para que ellos no intervinieran en lo ocurrido durante Endgame, creo que debió sacársele más provecho a esa situación, pero tampoco es que eso me arruine por completo la experiencia.

Regarding this, I think that the criticism focuses mainly on the lack of originality of the powers that the characters present, in fact, the resemblance of Ikaris to Superman is criticized, but that is not the fault of this film, it is something typical of the comic, he is a character created to be equivalent to the man of steel, even the tape itself refers to that; so there is no point in such criticism, it is like complaining that Homelander from The Boys is very similar to the last son of Krypton, even if this is not a parody or deconstruction of the DC hero, it is obvious that it is his pastiche, but it is not something new, as an example we have the cases of Flash and Quiksilver, Namor and Aquaman, Green Arrow and Hawkeye, Black Panther and Red Lion, Deathstroke and Deadpool...
Before concluding, I do not want to stop raising my appreciation regarding the way in which the original story was adapted to make it consistent with the MCU, I think that having changed its status as an alien race for that of super advanced artificial replicas is excellent, the purpose of his stay on the planet to protect intelligent life and generate the conditions for a celestial to develop inside the earth, it also seems to me a very interesting narrative twist. That the energy produced by the intelligent population of the world may be somewhat far-fetched, yes, but this is not hard science fiction, it is the same universe in which a radioactive spider gives a teenager super powers, everything is in how open it is the viewer's mind to assimilate this type of fanciful concepts. To me, like others, the justification for them not intervening in what happened during Endgame seemed very vague, I think they should have taken more advantage of that situation, but it's not like that completely ruined my experience.
Otro punto en el que se regodean las críticas es en la inclusión forzada que presenta, imagino que para algunas personas eso puede ser un gran problema, sin embargo, yo encuentro bastante bien la diversidad de los personajes, tampoco tengo ningún problema con el beso homosexual o la breve y poco explícita escena de sexo entre Sersi e Ikaris. Lo único que puede chocarme un poco es que Makkari haya sido creada por un celestial y tenga esa discapacidad auditiva, pero lo entiendo y lo dejo pasar en pro de la inclusión. Para quienes dicen que ella no podría usar lenguaje de señas antes de que se hubiera inventado, les recuerdo que en este universo las civilizaciones extraterrestres hablan inglés.
En definitiva, está claro que pudo ser mejor y que es una película algo pesada en comparación con lo que nos tiene acostumbrados el UCM, pero de allí a catalogarla como una de las peores producciones de la franquicia y decir que es sumamente aburrida, yo no comparto para nada esa idea, en cambio creo que para lo extensa y densa que es su trama, resulta entretenida, al menos para mí. Tiene una buena reflexión de fondo, un giro de trama relativamente inesperado y sorpresivo, escenas de acción bastante buenas, los poderes de los personajes, aunque genéricos están bien y expande correctamente la mitología de Marvel, con todo eso para mí es una buena película, mi nota final es de 7.5 / 10.

It has a good background reflection, a relatively unexpected and surprising plot twist, quite good action scenes, the powers of the characters, although generic, are good and it correctly expands the Marvel mythology, with all that for me it is a good movie, my final mark is 7.5 / 10.
