Esta es una de las pocas películas dramáticas que me animo a ver, ya que el drama no es precisamente mi género más apreciado, aunque eso no quiere decir que no pueda disfrutar bastante de algunas obras de este tipo de cine que me parecen muy buenas; justamente la cinta que recomiendo en este post es una de ellas. No pretendo hacer una descripción profunda de los acontecimientos que en esta suceden, para no arruinarle a nadie la experiencia al verla, ya que más que una reseña asumo a este articulo como una recomendación, para que cualquiera que lo lea se disponga a verla y pueda disfrutarla sin que la información acá expuesta, llegue a afectar la carga emocional que presenta.
Personalmente, aunque el drama no me atrae tanto, me llaman la atención estas películas en que se narra la historia de personajes con intelectos especiales o que han alcanzado hazañas intelectuales importantes, como ocurren en Forrest Gump, Rain Man, El código Enigma y La teoría del todo, entre otras. Por lo tanto, este largometraje que se enfoca en la situación familiar que vive una niña de 7 años llamada Mary Adler, quien es poseedora de un asombroso talento para las matemáticas, me pareció interesante y me impulzó a verla. Realmente no tenía mayores expectativas sobre la película, ya que, de hecho, no tenía idea sobre su existencia o sus pormenores, hasta que me la tropecé en internet y al darme cuenta de que en el reparto se encontraban Chris Evans y Octavia Spencer, eso contribuyó bastante para que me motivara a verla.
El elenco
Ya que acabo de mencionar a dos de los actores que forman parte del reparto, debo decir que el rol protagónico (el papel de Mary) lo interpreta una joven actriz llamada Mckenna Grace, esta niña a su corta edad de solo 11 años, la que tenía para 2017 cuando se estrenó la película, ya que ahora tiene 15 primaveras; había participado antes en una considerable cantidad de episodios de diferentes series de televisión y también en varias producciones cinematográficas, entre ellas Angry Birds: La película e Independence Day: Resurgence, ambas del 2016. Su participación en Gifted fue tan notoria, que le hizo merecedora de dos premios Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards y varias otras nominaciones en distintos premios, entre los que destacan los Critics' Choice Movie Awards. A partir de allí, ha tenido importantes papeles en películas de la talla de Ready Player One, Capitana Marvel, Annabelle Comes Home, Maligno y Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
This is one of the few dramatic films that I dare to see, since drama is not exactly my most appreciated genre, although that does not mean that I cannot enjoy enough of some works of this type of cinema that seem very good to me; Precisely the tape that I recommend in this post is one of them. I do not pretend to make a deep description of the events that happen in it, so as not to ruin anyone's experience by seeing it, since more than a review I assume this article as a recommendation, so that anyone who reads it is ready to see it and can enjoy it without the information presented here affecting the emotional charge it presents.
Personally, although drama doesn't attract me that much, I'm interested in these movies that tell the story of characters with special intellects or who have achieved important intellectual feats, as in Forrest Gump, Rain Man, The Enigma Code and The Theory of Everything, among others. Therefore, this feature film that focuses on the family situation of a 7-year-old girl named Mary Adler, who has an amazing talent for mathematics, seemed interesting to me and prompted me to watch it. I didn't really have high expectations for the movie, as I actually had no idea about its existence or its details, until I stumbled across it on the internet and realized that Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer were in the cast, that It did a lot to motivate me to watch it.
The cast
Since I have just mentioned two of the actors that are part of the cast, I must say that the leading role (the role of Mary) is played by a young actress named Mckenna Grace, this girl at her young age of only 11 years, the one who he had for 2017 when the film was released, since he is now 15 years old; He had previously participated in a considerable number of episodes of different television series and also in several film productions, including Angry Birds: The Movie and Independence Day: Resurgence, both from 2016. Las actuaciones de Chris Evans y Octavia Spencer son por supuesto de una gran calidad como es normal en ellos, aunque quien se luce en esta oportunidad, a parte de la niña, es Evans, que encarna a Frank, un hombre joven y soltero que debe hacerse cargo de su prodigiosa sobrina sin estar preparado para ello, lo que obviamente impacta su vida social. Sin embargo, él hace su mejor intento por proporcionarle a la pequeña un entorno modesto pero amoroso, en el cual pueda desarrollarse como una niña normal y ser feliz, sin que nadie le imponga el deber de convertirse en genio de las matemáticas y la presione a llevar una vida de constante estudio académico, negándole la posibilidad de vivir en libertad de forma sencilla y alegre, teniendo la independencia suficiente como para decidir por sí misma hasta qué punto desea exprimir su don y dedicarle su existencia al cálculo y la resolución de complejas ecuaciones.
Realmente creo que es una de las mejores actuaciones que Chris Evans ha tenido durante toda su carrera, ya que tiene momentos con una carga sentimental muy fuerte, otros en los que expresa muy bien ese amor puro y familiar que existe entre Frank y Mary, así como escenas en las que debe aflorar el carácter de este hombre para defender a la niña de quien amenaza su bienestar y felicidad. En cambio, el personaje de Octavia Spencer apenas tiene participación en el metraje, de modo que no le es posible hacer gala de sus talentos actorales, más allá de algunas breves intervenciones en las que lógicamente hace un trabajo correcto y tiene peso en la historia, pero no llega a tener espacio suficiente para dar una actuación deslumbrante.
Otros roles importantes son el de Bonnie (la maestra de Mary), interpretado por Jenny Slate, y el de Evelyn (su abuela), que es representado por Lindsay Duncan. Ambas realizan trabajos correctos, aunque no demasiado memorables; cabe mencionar que para el momento en que se rodó la película, Chris Evans y Jenny Slate eran pareja en la vida real, de modo que eso puede haberle añadido una mejor química a su relación en pantalla. La dirección está a cargo de Marc Webb, cineasta que antes realizó el filme independiente (500) días con ella, el cual obtuvo un gran éxito tanto por parte de la crítica como en taquilla, además dirigió las dos entregas de The Amazing Spider-Man, que no fueron precisamente exitosas.

However, he tries his best to provide the little girl with a modest but loving environment, in which she can develop as a normal girl and be happy, without anyone imposing a duty on her to become a math genius and pressuring her to do so. lead a life of constant academic study, denying her the possibility of living in freedom in a simple and joyful way, having enough independence to decide for herself to what extent she wants to express her gift and dedicate her existence to calculation and the resolution of complex equations .
I really think that it is one of the best performances that Chris Evans has had throughout his career, since he has moments with a very strong sentimental charge, others in which he expresses very well that pure and familiar love that exists between Frank and Mary, as well as scenes in which the character of this man must emerge to defend the girl from who threatens her well-being and happiness. On the other hand, the character of Octavia Spencer barely has a part in the footage, so it is not possible for her to show off her acting talents, beyond some brief interventions in which she logically does a correct job and has weight in the story, but it does not have enough space to give a dazzling performance.
Other important roles are Bonnie (Mary's teacher), played by Jenny Slate, and Evelyn (her grandmother), who is played by Lindsay Duncan. Both do decent, if not overly memorable, jobs; It's worth mentioning that by the time the movie was shot, Chris Evans and Jenny Slate were a couple in real life, so that may have added better chemistry to their on-screen relationship. The direction is in charge of Marc Webb, a filmmaker who previously made the independent film (500) Days of Summer, which was a great success both by critics and at the box office, he also directed the two installments of The Amazing Spider-Man, which were not exactly successful.
Critica
La película es bastante íntima y se centra especialmente en las emociones de sus personajes, nos regala momentos muy tiernos y hermosos en los que podemos vislumbrar los lazos afectivos que atan a Mary y su tío, así como escenas conmovedoras en la que se exponen las circunstancias que deben enfrentar para mantenerse juntos. La historia es capaz de tocarnos el corazón e inundarnos los ojos de lágrimas, pero siento que no se convierte tampoco en otra de esas producciones plagadas de tragedia, en las que todo lo que ocurre es tétrico y se nos muestra una visión oscura del mundo, en esta cinta hay un buen equilibrio entre tristeza y felicidad que se alinea mucho con mis preferencias.
Quizá este largometraje, el cual por cierto no es muy largo (solo tiene una duración de una hora y media), en lo que se refiere a la parte técnica de su cinematografía, emplea mucho los clichés propios de estas películas en las que se desarrollan conflictos legales emotivos, en la forma en que se producen los planos y tomas que buscan el dramatismo de las escenas en la corte por encima de la sustancia de los hechos. De modo que en cuestión del enfoque en que se narran los acontecimientos, la historia es contada de forma algo superficial, de hecho, el tema de las matemáticas, que es un punto central en la trama, tampoco se aborda muy en profundidad; se hace más énfasis en la relación familiar que en el interés de la niña por los números.
Sin embargo, creo que ese distanciamiento de la película con la parte intelectual de la protagonista para darle prioridad a sus sentimientos más fraternales, en cierto modo es un acierto más que un defecto, pues la intensión es crear un dilema entre el valor de un ser humano y su derecho a tener una vida plena, libre y feliz, ante el valor que pudiera representar un cerebro prodigioso para la humanidad, debido a los avances técnicos que pudiera esta persona alcanzar si pone de lado su satisfacción personal, con el fin de contribuir al progreso de la ciencia. Esto por supuesto, con el componente añadido de ambición y ego, que es encarnado en alguien que coloca su afán de reconocimiento por encima del amor familiar.
En función de todo lo expuesto antes, mi calificación para esta película es 7/10.
Review
The film is quite intimate and focuses especially on the emotions of its characters, it gives us very tender and beautiful moments in which we can glimpse the emotional ties that bind Mary and her uncle, as well as moving scenes in which the circumstances are exposed. they must face to stay together. The story is capable of touching our hearts and flooding our eyes with tears, but I feel that it does not become another of those productions full of tragedy, in which everything that happens is gloomy and we are shown a dark vision of the world, In this film there is a good balance between sadness and happiness that is very much in line with my preferences.
Perhaps this feature film, which by the way is not very long (it only lasts an hour and a half), as far as the technical part of its cinematography is concerned, uses a lot of the clichés typical of these films in which they take place emotional legal conflicts, in the way in which the shots and shots are produced that seek the drama of the scenes in court over the substance of the facts. So in a matter of the approach in which the events are narrated, the story is told in a somewhat superficial way, in fact, the subject of mathematics, which is a central point in the plot, is not addressed very deeply either; more emphasis is placed on the family relationship than on the girl's interest in numbers.
However, I think that this distancing of the film from the intellectual part of the protagonist to give priority to her most fraternal feelings, in a certain way is a success rather than a defect, since the intention is to create a dilemma between the value of a being and their right to have a full, free and happy life, given the value that a prodigious brain could represent for humanity, due to the technical advances that this person could achieve if he puts aside his personal satisfaction, in order to contribute to the progress of science. This of course, with the added component of ambition and ego, which is embodied in someone who places her desire for recognition above family love.
Based on all of the above, my rating for this movie is 7/10.
