La película original (la que inició la saga de la cual esta nueva entrega es la quinta) es todo un clásico dentro del género del terror o más específicamente del slasher, que es este subgénero en el cual el villano es algún tipo de psicópata que acecina brutalmente, por lo general utilizando cuchillos o armas blancas, a jóvenes en etapa escolar (secundaria) o universitaria, mientras estos realizan actividades sociales propias de su edad, en las que poco interfieren adultos; como fiestas o excursiones con amigos. Aunque, seguramente muchos confundirán a Scream del año 1996, con Scary Movie del 2000, que en realidad es una parodia de esa película y también de otra que se llama: Se lo que hicieron el verano pasado (estrenada en 1997).
La saga siempre ha tenido un estilo muy particular, ya que, aunque no se trata de una parodia como es el caso de Scary Movie (que si está repleta de humor ridículo), Scream cuenta con un componente de comedia bastante sobrio pero marcado y un carácter de metacine en el que siempre existe un personaje que explica las características recurrentes en este tipo de películas, haciendo constantemente autorreferencias que ponen en evidencia los clichés del género y los satiriza. Por lo tanto, creo que el principal objetivo de esta nueva entrega tenía que ser, como efectivamente opino que lo fue, mantener esa esencia de la franquicia y me parece que lo consiguió, de allí que hasta ahora, esté obteniendo una buena recepción tanto por parte de la crítica como del público.
The original film (the one that started the saga of which this new installment is the fifth) is a classic within the horror genre or more specifically the slasher, which is this subgenre in which the villain is some kind of psychopath who kills brutally, usually using knives or bladed weapons, young people in school (secondary) or university, while they carry out social activities appropriate to their age, in which little adults interfere; such as parties or outings with friends. Although, surely many will confuse Scream from 1996, with Scary Movie from 2000, which is actually a parody of that movie and also of another called: I know what they did last summer (released in 1997).
The saga has always had a very particular style, since, although it is not a parody as is the case with Scary Movie (which is full of ridiculous humor), Scream has a quite sober but marked comedy component and a metacinema character in which there is always a character who explains the recurrent characteristics in this type of film, constantly making self-references that expose the clichés of the genre and satirises them. Therefore, I think that the main objective of this new installment had to be, as I really think it was, to maintain that essence of the franchise and it seems to me that it achieved it, which is why, until now, it has been receiving a good reception both by part of the critics as well as the public.
Esta quinta entrega, corresponde a un soft rebook (reinicio suave) o lo que la propia película ha definido como una recuela, es decir una mescla entre un reinicio (reboot) y una secuela, recordemos que cada una de las cuatro películas anteriores ha tenido una temática específica en la cual centrar sus meta-referencias, en la película original se hacía mención a las películas del género slasher en sí mismas, la segunda parte tenía que ver con las secuelas de esas cintas, la tercera enfocaba su metalenguaje en las trilogías y la cuarta en los remakes, con mención especial sobre el llamado Terror Elevado que ha surgido como una evolución en el género durante los últimos años. Esta película cuenta nuevamente una historia que persiste en la misma estructura que se ha vuelto repetitiva durante las diferentes entregas, pero que representa la identidad de la franquicia, esta vez desde el punto de vista de nuevos personajes, al mismo tiempo en que integra a los personajes ya tradicionales de la saga, con lo cual consigue un fuerte impacto nostálgico en la audiencia.
Desde mi punto de vista, se manejó de buena forma esta incorporación de personajes conocidos, ya que no se reduce a simples cameos forzados, sino que realmente tienen importancia en la trama y presencia en el metraje, a la vez que mantienen un perfil secundario pasando el testigo a nuevos roles que protagonizan los hechos. Sin embargo, esos nuevos integrantes no me parece que hayan alcanzado una trascendencia significativa, como para sustentar por sí mismos el peso de la franquicia, aun cuando el personaje de nombre Sam, que es interpretado por la actriz mexicana Melissa Barrera, me parece interesante y decentemente actuado, de hecho, buena parte del tiempo creí que sería ella la asesina o al menos una de los dos asesinos.

This film once again tells a story that persists in the same structure that has become repetitive during the different installments, but that represents the identity of the franchise, this time from the point of view of new characters, at the same time that it integrates the already traditional characters of the saga, which achieves a strong nostalgic impact on the audience.
From my point of view, this incorporation of well-known characters was handled in a good way, since it is not reduced to simple forced cameos, but rather they really have importance in the plot and presence in the footage, while maintaining a secondary profile passing the witness to new roles that star in the events. However, these new members do not seem to me to have reached a significant transcendence, enough to sustain the weight of the franchise by themselves, even though the character named Sam, who is played by the Mexican actress Melissa Barrera, seems interesting to me and decently acted, in fact, much of the time I thought she would be the murderer or at least one of the two murderers.
En realidad, la trama de estas películas nunca ha sido una maravilla, de hecho, el propio genero slasher no se caracteriza por tener excelentes argumentaciones, más bien todo suele ser bastante simple, solo que existe un misterio por resolver y que en el tercer acto debe dilucidarse de forma coherente, para que así lo podamos considerar como un desenlace satisfactorio. En mi criterio, esta es la parte en la que esta película es más floja, si bien la intriga previa es bastante buena, haciéndonos cambiar de sospechoso una y otra vez, finalmente cuando todo se revela, las motivaciones de los asesinos resultan poco convincentes y dan la sensación de simplemente constituir una excusa, para volver a mostrar la misma historia que con cada película se nos vuelve a narrar.
Como ya dije, lo intrincada e inteligente que pueda llegar a ser la trama de estas películas no es su principal atractivo, los espectadores damos por hecho que estamos viendo nuevamente la misma historia con algunos cambios superficiales, de modo que lo importante acá no es tanto la originalidad y la innovación, sino el que la película consiga en cierto modo homenajear a sus antecesoras y mantener la esencia de la saga, a la vez que actualiza su visión con respecto al contexto cinematográfico contemporáneo, insuflándole aire fresco a la franquicia. Allí (y en su componente nostálgico) creo que radica el éxito de este largometraje, lo cual le permitió en el fin de semana de su debut, destronar a Spider-Man: No Way Home, que no había cedido el primer lugar desde su estreno varias semanas atrás.

In my opinion, this is the part where this film is weakest, although the previous intrigue is quite good, making us change the suspect again and again, finally when everything is revealed, the motivations of the murderers are unconvincing and they give the feeling of simply constituting an excuse, to show again the same story that with each film we are narrated again.
As I already said, how intricate and intelligent the plot of these films can be is not their main attraction, viewers take for granted that we are seeing the same story again with some superficial changes, so the important thing here is not so much originality and innovation, but rather the fact that the film somehow manages to pay homage to its predecessors and maintain the essence of the saga, while updating its vision with respect to the contemporary cinematographic context, breathing fresh air into the franchise. There (and in its nostalgic component) I think lies the success of this feature film, which allowed it to dethrone Spider-Man: No Way Home, which had not given up first place since its premiere, on the weekend of its debut. several weeks ago.
No obstante, aunque realmente la historia no posee mayor complejidad, la forma en la que está expuesta la trama, la hace bastante entretenida e intrigante hasta cierto punto, pues determinar quién está cometiendo los asesinatos no es una tarea fácil. La película navega en esa estrecha franja que se ubica entre la neofilia de los cinéfilos que siempre están deseando ver cosas nuevas y la neofobia de los fanáticos más tóxicos, que se oponen ferozmente a los cambios efectuados a la versión original, al punto en que el mismo filme hace una crítica al fandom debido a lo complicado que resulta para cualquier estudio cinematográfico, lograr complacer en la actualidad a la mayoría de su público y conseguir que los comentarios en Internet contribuyan al éxito de la producción y no a su fracaso comercial.
Para finalizar debo decir, que aunque esta película no me parece una obra maestra, si creo que cumple adecuadamente con su cometido, mostrando a su icónico villano Ghostface con su característica violencia y las acostumbradas torpezas o equivocaciones que comete durante algunos de sus asesinatos, la película juega mucho con los clichés del cine de terror como las apariciones del villano detrás de las puertas, lo cual muchas veces esperamos que ocurra y nos deja en esa espera durante varios intentos hasta que finalmente ocurre, cosas simples que son parte de la identidad de la saga y que se ejecutan de forma correcta. En definitiva, creo que vale la pena verla y si tengo que darle una calificación yo le otorgo un 7,5 de 10.

To conclude, I must say that although this film does not seem like a masterpiece to me, I do believe that it adequately fulfills its mission, showing its iconic villain Ghostface with his characteristic violence and the usual clumsiness or mistakes he makes during some of his murders, the The film plays a lot with the clichés of horror movies such as the appearances of the villain behind the doors, which many times we expect to happen and leaves us waiting for several attempts until it finally happens, simple things that are part of the identity of the saga and that they are executed correctly. Ultimately, I think it's worth watching and if I have to give it a rating I give it a 7.5 out of 10.
