Desde que vi la serie El juego del calamar hace ya varios meses atrás, he estado interesado en mirar Alice in Borderland, otra serie también estrenada en Netflix, pero un año antes, en 2020; ya que en alguna parte leí que esta adaptación japonesa del Manga que lleva el mismo nombre, presenta algunas similitudes con la temática de la exitosa producción surcoreana de 2021. Lamentablemente, diferentes ocupaciones me habían impedido disfrutar de los 8 capítulos que la componen, pero ahora ya la he visto y quiero compartir con la comunidad mis apreciaciones al respecto. En efecto, entre ambas series existe un obvio parentesco, pues las dos son producciones asiáticas, en las que se nos presenta a un grupo de personajes que se encuentran inmersos en un juego mortal y por lo tanto deben intentar ganar diferentes pruebas para continuar con vida.
En esta oportunidad el argumento trata sobre un trio de amigos, entre los cuales se encuentra el protagonista principal, un joven llamado Arisu, que es adicto a los videojuegos (en lo cual es muy bueno), pero no posee un propósito o proyecto de vida concreto, por lo que no cubre las expectativas de su familia y solo se siente a gusto cuando pasa tiempo con sus amigos. Estos tres chicos en un determinado momento se encuentran en el concurrido centro de Shibuya (Tokio), donde como es habitual transita un gran número de personas, estando allí, debido a su comportamiento inmaduro provocan un incidente de tránsito, por lo que corren hasta un baño público para ocultarse de la policía, entonces de repente hay un fallo en la electricidad y cuando salen nuevamente a la calle, todas las personas han desaparecido, a excepción de ellos y algunos otros personajes con los que se toparan más adelante.
Luego descubren que tanto ellos como los demás individuos que se encuentran en ese mundo casi totalmente deshabitado, se ven obligados a participar en una serie de pruebas letales en las que sus vidas corren un alto riesgo, pero en las que no pueden dejar de participar, ya que cada uno de ellos tiene asignada una visa que les permite seguir vivos, cada una de estas visas solo puede ser brevemente extendida si su portador supera las pruebas en las que ingresa. Cuando el participante sale vivo de una de estas pruebas, recibe algunos días de expansión en su visa, en caso de no participar en ellas la visa expira y esa persona es acecinada por un láser proveniente del cielo, que le impacta en la cabeza. Un aspecto quizá no tan importante, pero que me parece digno de mencionar, es que su título hace referencia a la clásica historia de Alicia en el país de las maravillas (Alice in Wonderland).
Since I saw the series The Squid Game several months ago, I have been interested in watching Alice in Borderland, another series also released on Netflix, but a year earlier, in 2020; since somewhere I read that this Japanese adaptation of the Manga that bears the same name, has some similarities with the theme of the successful South Korean production of 2021. Unfortunately, different occupations had prevented me from enjoying the 8 chapters that make it up, but now I have already seen it and I want to share with the community my appreciations about it. Indeed, there is an obvious relationship between the two series, since both are Asian productions, in which we are presented with a group of characters who are immersed in a deadly game and therefore must try to win different tests to stay alive. .
This time the plot is about a trio of friends, among whom is the main character, a young man named Arisu, who is addicted to video games (which he is very good at), but does not have a purpose or life project. concrete, so he does not meet the expectations of his family and he only feels comfortable when he spends time with his friends. These three boys at a certain moment are in the busy center of Shibuya (Tokyo), where as usual a large number of people travel, being there, due to their immature behavior they cause a traffic incident, so they run to a public bathroom to hide from the police, then suddenly there is a power failure and when they go back out into the street, all the people have disappeared, except for them and some other characters they run into later.
Then they discover that both they and the other individuals who find themselves in this almost totally uninhabited world, are forced to participate in a series of lethal tests in which their lives are at high risk, but in which they cannot stop participating, since each of them is assigned a visa that allows them to stay alive, each of these visas can only be briefly extended if their holder passes the tests in which they enter. When the participant comes out alive from one of these tests, he receives a few days of expansion in his visa, in case of not participating in them the visa expires and that person is assassinated by a laser coming from the sky, which hits him in the head. An aspect perhaps not so important, but that seems worth mentioning to me, is that its title refers to the classic story of Alice in Wonderland.
Por otro lado, si bien la premisa se asemeja a la de El juego del calamar, las diferencias entre las dos series son bastante significativas, pues Alice in Borderland es una obra de ciencia ficción basada en un manga, lo cual le imprime un estilo muy propio del anime, que se aleja en cierta medida del realismo y se aproxima más a la fantasía, lo que se evidencia en algunos personajes que poseen características algo exageradas y situaciones que exceden la naturalidad de las cosas. Aunque, tampoco estoy diciendo con ello, que sea una historia repleta de elementos tecnológicos avanzados y acontecimientos estrambóticos, la verdad es que aun cuando se nota un tono similar al de un producto anime, tampoco es que eso sea tan marcado como en otras adaptaciones equivalentes a esta. De hecho, resulta mucho más acorde a un público no consumidor de animaciones japonesas de lo que pudiera esperarse en primera instancia.
Incluso me inclino a pensar, que aun cuando tuvo un buen recibimiento en el momento en que fue estrenada en la plataforma de streaming, su impacto no fue tan masivo por tratarse de una producción nipona basada en un manga, ya que otras adaptaciones similares previas han mostrado una calidad muy pobre, aun cuando correspondían a obras de manga o anime mucho más populares. De modo que seguramente, muchas personas habrían subestimado esta producción y solo luego del éxito de Squid Game, debido a las similitudes que guarda con esa serie coreana, Alice in Borderland ha recibido un segundo aire de popularidad.
En cuanto a sus elementos de ciencia ficción, uno de los más notorios y recurrentes en la serie, son los rayos láser que aparentemente vienen desde el cielo y acaban con las vidas de los jugadores cuando estos son retirados de la competición, pero más allá de eso, otros aspectos como la posible intervención de extraterrestres en el rol de los verdaderos Game Masters o la existencia de una dimensión paralela a la del mundo real, en la que podrían encontrarse los jugadores, son especulaciones que al menos por el momento, solo se encuentran en la imaginación de nosotros los espectadores, dado que al no recibir una respuesta de parte de la propia serie, recurrimos a la creación de nuestras propias teorías, con el fin de solucionar el misterio.
On the other hand, although the premise is similar to that of The Squid Game, the differences between the two series are quite significant, since Alice in Borderland is a science fiction work based on a manga, which gives it a very interesting style. typical of anime, which moves away to a certain extent from realism and is closer to fantasy, which is evident in some characters that have somewhat exaggerated characteristics and situations that exceed the naturalness of things. Although, I am not saying with this, that it is a story full of advanced technological elements and bizarre events, the truth is that even when a tone similar to that of an anime product is noticeable, it is not that it is as marked as in other equivalent adaptations. this. In fact, it is much more in line with a non-consumer audience of Japanese animations than might be expected at first.
I even tend to think that even though it was well received at the time it was released on the streaming platform, its impact was not as massive as it was a Japanese production based on a manga, since other previous similar adaptations have displayed very poor quality, even though they corresponded to much more popular manga or anime works. So surely, many people would have underestimated this production and only after the success of Squid Game, due to its similarities with that Korean series, Alice in Borderland has received a second wind of popularity.
As for its science fiction elements, one of the most notorious and recurring in the series, are the laser beams that apparently come from the sky and end the lives of the players when they are removed from the competition, but beyond That, other aspects such as the possible intervention of aliens in the role of the true Game Masters or the existence of a dimension parallel to the real world, in which the players could find themselves, are speculations that at least for the moment, only they find in the imagination of us viewers, since not receiving a response from the series itself, we resort to the creation of our own theories, in order to solve the mystery.
En mi opinión, Alice in Borderland es una buena serie, con una argumentación sencilla e intrigante a la vez, que mantiene en suspenso el porqué de todo lo que en ella ocurre, tiene un ritmo quizá un poco inconsistente y abrupto, pero nada que resulte demasiado incomodo o que arruine la experiencia del visionado. Su mayor fuerte es el desarrollo de los juegos en sí mismos, que son bastante elaborados, lo que los hace complejos de resolver para los personajes, al enmarcarse en un sistema relacionado con una baraja de naipes, donde los diferentes palos de estas cartas determinan el tipo de pruebas que comprende el juego, esto le otorga un buen grado de dificulta desde la perspectiva de los jugadores y una mayor cuota de entretenimiento desde el punto de vista de los espectadores de la serie.
En consecuencia, Alice in Borderland resulta ser una serie con buena dosis de acción, dado que los protagonistas constantemente están luchando por sus vidas, a lo que se suma un aura de suspenso que envuelve a toda la trama, pues no se ofrece inicialmente una justificación coherente para que las personas hayan desaparecido de un momento a otros sin dejar rastro. Si de algo carece esta producción de Netflix, es de un trasfondo profundo y reflexivo (a diferencia de Squid Game que alberga un mensaje y una crítica social), en este caso su propósito es el mero entretenimiento, de modo que se enfoca en ello y consigue resultados muy satisfactorios, pero sin aspirar a más. Mi calificación final para esta serie es de 7.5/10.
In my opinion, Alice in Borderland is a good series, with a simple and intriguing argument at the same time, which keeps in suspense the reason for everything that happens in it, it has a rhythm that is perhaps a little inconsistent and abrupt, but nothing that is too uncomfortable or ruin the viewing experience. Its greatest strength is the development of the games themselves, which are quite elaborate, which makes them complex for the characters to solve, as they are framed in a system related to a deck of cards, where the different suits of these cards determine the type of tests that the game includes, this gives it a good degree of difficulty from the perspective of the players and a greater share of entertainment from the point of view of the viewers of the series.
Consequently, Alice in Borderland turns out to be a series with a good dose of action, since the protagonists are constantly fighting for their lives, to which is added an aura of suspense that surrounds the entire plot, since no justification is initially offered. coherent so that people have disappeared from one moment to another without leaving a trace. If this Netflix production lacks something, it is a deep and thoughtful background (unlike Squid Game that harbors a message and social criticism), in this case its purpose is mere entertainment, so it focuses on it and achieves very satisfactory results, but without aspiring to more. My final rating for this series is 7.5/10.
